Full Frontal Nudity

I'm going to have to agree with many earlier posters on this one-- I'm fine with some sex and nudity being included, so long as it is tasteful and relevant to the plot and/ or character development. Actually, I feel the same way about sex and nudity as I do about graphic violence-- including this every once and a while when necessary can have a great impact; but too much and it becomes somewhat ridiculous and hard to watch.

The only other HBO show I've watched is Rome, and I think that had a lot of examples of both well done violence and nudity and examples of taking things to far. For instance, in plenty of scenes I got the feeling that they were just showing yet another topless female to be cutting edge, and remind everybody "Oh yes, you are watching HBO! And it's so badass, look at all this stuff we're gonna show you!" Less is more, and I'd like the sex and/or violence to have a point.

A Game of Thrones has more wild personages and to understand better, the series needs to be very raw and explicit. As not are more sex than Rome series or Empire boardwalk! HBO Game of Thrones, failed.

Most people want to see morbidity, sex and much violence, and HBO is handled very well.

Does anyone remember "Deadwood"? This series is also a half erect penis.

Wow. I for one NEVER want to see this series.

In the first Dany chapter after she has married Drogo, she says that Drogo takes her every night, roughly, from behind. So roughly that she cries. Whether that would be rape is up to interpretation - but she didn't have much say in what was happening to her body, so there was some degree of violation.

Also I love you saying that Dany finally taking hold of her sexuality and having sex with her husband on her own terms is "aggressive".

Go read again please, and retune your biases.

Just my two cents, but perhaps the earlier poster meant "sexually aggressive" in a positive way? I know that when i use that term when referring to a woman I usually mean someone who (sexually speaking) knows what she wants and is not afraid to go after it. In other words, sometimes the term "sexually aggressive" is used to mean "sexually assertive." (Which is a positive thing, especially in the case of Danerys.)

Re the Drogo/ Dany sex-- I agree with you that it was ambiguous. Personally, I always thought it was more of a failure of communication than anything. Though Drogo was a brute in many ways, I honestly do think that he cared about Danerys and wanted to care for and protect her. His kindness to her on their wedding night and his reaction when Viserys threatened her illustrate this. I think that Drogo (being an incredibly insensitive barbarian, after all) did not really realize how painful and uncomfortable the sex was for Danerys. Furthermore, I think Danerys consented to this sex for the same reason she allowed herself to get blisters from riding all day in the saddle-- because she was trying to harden herself for her new life.

There are definitely scenes with sex that are important to GRRM's plot...but there are also a lot that aren't....but I'm still going to maintain that the majority of scenes with sex in the books aren't important.

Which scene(s) do you believe were extraneous? I do not recall a scene that did not either develop a character further or illustrate their mindset and mood at that time.

I am not comfortable with the idea that sex is "dirty". It's an unhealthy viewpoint.

Rome was good and so is Boardwalk. There is meaning and balance to nudity and violence in these shows. Spartacus Blood and Sand in my view was totally off. The plot was irrelevant, it revolved around sex and blood (and cheap looking blood too), so I stopped watching - I decided that if I wanted porn at least I'd go for a proper one with full contact and visibility :D

I think Game of Thrones will be, as everyone puts it, tasteful. Also, there are many young actors, so legal considerations will play a role as well. I expect it to be something like Rome as far as nudity is concerned, which is far from excessive or too shy.

I think what we really need is for the show to be wildly successful. So much so that it gets its own porn parody. And then everyone in the thread will be happy.

We've been waiting 5 years for the book; will it really be so hard to wait a year or two for the porn?

Or, if you want to get "artistic"... we could have A Song of Ice and Fire all- nude theatrical version!

Seriously, they did that in the 1960's with Hamlet-- they just used the classic script of the play but all of the actors performing it were naked. I guess it was supposed to be "experimental" "alternative" and "cutting edge." Hey, it was the sixties. Anyway, I guarantee you that the "all nude theater version" of ASOIAF would probably hook academics and "artistic" types.

Actually, now that I think about it, on the cheese scale, a broadway musical version of A Game of Thrones would rate above an all nude play version or a porn parody. I can just imagine Jaime's solo: "The Things I do for love (yeah, yeah, yeah!") Right before throwing Bran off the balcony, he and Cersei could break into song, and do a quick number complete with special lighting and backup dancers.

Instead of murdering Ned, Joffrey could reveal his true nature to Sansa by doing some truly "freaky" break dancing moves from back in the eighties. (To the tune of a Michael Jackson song, no less, just in case there were any doubts about the boy's depraved nature.) And who can forget the flashback of Rhaegar and Robert's famous fight-- transformed for the show into a magical dance off!

As has probably been pointed out before: the problem is not consensual sex between Tyrion and whores or the Lannister incest. But there is no way the gangrapes following a typical Dothraki raid could be presented "tastefully". I really don't want to see something like that too explicitly. Borderline cases like the somewhat rough sex between Dany and Drogo can be handled, I guess. But the village burning and the Dothraki lining up and taking their turns on screaming teenage girls... :ack:

I agree, no one wants to see that, and it be near impossible to handle tastefully.

However, it could be shown in a way that is not graphic gangrape, but does crucially convey the violent conquering nature of the Dothraki. Without a way of establishing and portraying that nature, they are essentially 4H-club horse enthusiasts, and that does not serve the viewer at all, much less the fan. In that way, it certainly would not be "titties for titties sake".

Sex, in many forms, can be vital to the story. With Tyrion and the whores, I believe it shows the way that he is spurned by regular women, and must therefore resort to paying for sex, and the effect that has on his self-worth and esteem reflects directly on several key decisions he makes throughout the series.
