Create your Westerosi house

The Isle of Faces

Recommended Posts

This thread is so fun, I had to create an account just to add my own house! I may have gotten carried away, so it's a little long...

Name: House Lockwood

Sigil: A field of green with a golden lock in the top left and a golden key in the bottom right, separated by a silver bar sinister with gold trim.

House Words: You Shall Not Pass

Unofficial Motto: “For every lock, a key.” (Often used figuratively or jokingly, such as on wedding nights.)

Seat: Lockwood Manor, a well-hidden, naturally defended keep on a private cove.

Location: Coast of Blackwater Bay, between Duskendale and King’s Landing.

House Weapons: Flamebreaker, a suit of gleaming golden armor said to be capable of withstanding even the flames of a dragon. Master, a warhammer that, according to legend, can break any lock.

History: The house’s history begins with Hephaestus Lockwood, head of a prominent armorer’s guild in Westeros before Aegon’s Landing, comprised mostly of his own rather extensive family and various in-laws. The Lockwoods served the elite houses of the Seven Kingdoms, outfitting them with battle armor as well as designing household armaments such as dungeons, portcullises, and keeps.

Consistent with the family’s cautious and conservative style, the Lockwoods neither supported nor openly opposed Aegon Targaryen upon his Landing. A relatively small house, they escaped notice until the end of the Conquest, when a wealthy and secretive merchant family so close to both Dragonstone and King’s Landing disconcerted the newly victorious Targaryens.

According to legend, not even Aegon’s dragons were enough to breach the notorious defenses of Lockwood Manor. Eventually, though, the siege took its toll on both parties, and Hephaestus’ descendant Caeculus Lockwood agreed to bend the knee in exchange for lordship and an exclusive contract with the new Royal Family. A Lockwood has traditionally served as Master Armorer in King’s Landing ever since.

As opposed to more martial Houses, the Lockwoods preach defense over offense, and rarely take part in Westerosi politics. True to their mercenary roots, the Lockwoods prefer to advise, design, and furnish rather than venture into battle themselves. Their contract with the Targaryens forbids lending their expertise to any rival House, but they are rumored to have extensive dealings with lords and sellswords alike across the Narrow Sea, aided by Safe Haven – a private cove on the Blackwater Bay, which shields any ships’ comings and goings from prying eyes.

Since the death of the last Targaryen king, House Lockwood has continued serving whoever sits the Iron Throne on an ad hoc basis, though their true loyalties are unknown.

Name: House Vulcan

House Sigil: Standing white bull on a maroon background. Chosen after the wild bulls surrounding the area.

Motto: Virtue, Grace, Wisdom

Location: Twelve Gates is a city and major business and cultural centre in the North. It is the capital of the Borrowlands, located mainly between two Rivers south of Torrhen Square, giving it lordship over some of the most fertile land in the North. While not a port city, it does have easy access to Blackwater Bay. There are plans to start a university and military academy of the highest level.

House Weapon: Serenity is a longsword sword of Valyrian steel (obviously, lol), maroon-colored. It has been passed down for generations, and was bestowed made-to-order in the days of old Valyria.

Sworn to: The King of the North!

History: While not a great house, House Vulcan are descendant from the First Men. Oscillating in importance throughout the past thousands of years, they are currently in the rise again and are experiencing a period of great prosperity, but the War of Five Kings and Winter are a posing threat to this.

While not known for their fighting prowess, it has in the past produced some of the most renown Maesters, giving it a reputation for being wise. Through this strong tradition and connections with Old Town they are planning to create the first university of the North, although on a much smaller scale than that in Old Town.

It is currently working, prudently, towards Stark Restoration. Having received rumors of a wildling woman, a giant wolf and a kid traveling together it has sent messengers to try to approach these.

This is good! Very original (granted you had a Valyrian, but everyone did lol.) I like it.

Name: House Stormblood

Sigil: a quartered shield. The top right and bottom left corners of the shield feature a gold (not yellow) stag on a black background. the top left and bottom right corners feature a black lightning bolt on a gold background.

Founder: Darrek Storm.

Words: From Dreams Comes Life.

Unofficial Motto: Always remember where you came from.

Location: Just south of Storm's End.

Sword: Golden Antler, a bastard sword with a very small amount of Valyrian steel. The grip is black with a gold pommel and guard.

Sworn to: Baratheons

History: Darrek Storm was a bastard son of the heir of the Baratheons, the Lords of the Stormlands. He kept the boy's existence a secret from his family, but always made sure the boy was looked after. Eventually the young boy was taken as a squire by one of his father's trusted bannermen (one of the few who knew his secret) and there became a skilled fighter. One day his lord and a few other knights were ambushed by bandits, and although they were better armed, the bandits had them outnumbered badly. Darrek fought bravely and helped rescue his Lord, slaying many of the bandits in the process. For his actions, he was knighted Ser Darrek Storm. Eventually after years of service, his father, now Lord of Storm's End, revealed himself to Darrek and gave him a small keep just south of Storm's End. He also gave Darrek a Valyrian steel dagger which he had melted down and mixed with normal steel to produce the family sword. Darrek then took the name Stormblood to always remind his family where they came from. Storm, because they were bastards, but also because they possessed the blood of the rulers of Storm's End. The family words are a reminder than a man can achieve his dreams no matter how lowborn they may be.

Seems like the Baratheons have a history of fathering bastards, and they usually turn out quite useful...

House Name: Osprey

Current Lord: Cammen

Coat of Arms: A black eagle with a cluster of burgundy grapes in its talon against a tan sky

Words: Eyes On The Sea

Unofficial Words: Stay Salty

Seat: Eaglesport on the southwest shores of the Summer Sea

Ancestral Weapon(s): A curved shortsword called Beak and a spear called Talon; both said to be made from the same Valyrian steel melted down from an enemy's blade

Overlord: House Martell

History: The Ospreys are about as salty as any Dornishman. When the Rhoynish first landed in Dorne, Cammen the Seabound was but one captain amongst Nymeria's 10,000 ships. He claimed to spend his entire life at sea, with maybe a year total spend on solid ground at five-and-thirty. So when they came to Dorne, rather than settle at the first sight of land, he was the first to volunteer to sail within sight of the coast to map the entire continent. He was rumored to go as far as Bear Island before returning to the warmth of Dorne. But even as he returned he never spent much time in any one place, always preferring the sea to land.

Some time after Cammen the Seabound one of his descendants, Lem the Lecher would earn infamy for the Soiling of the Arbor, when he was discovered to have taken the maidenheads of not one, nor two, but three of the then Lord Redwyne's daughters. Infuriated Lord Redwyne took a host of ships and chased Lem relentlessly, who managed to always narrowly escape the lord's wrath. One story even suggested that he had disguised himself as a member of the crew on the Lord's own ship where he managed to dye the Lord's hair sea green and flew the undergarment's of the Lord's daughters in place of the Redwyne flags. From this began the long rivalry between Osprey and Redwyne, which was further agitated when Gawain Grapesbane defeated the Lord Redwyne in a battle on the Redwyne flagship and took their ancestral Valyrian blade as trophy of his victory. He then had the blade melted down and reworked into a spear head and a shortsword to pass on to his descendants as a reminder of their dominance over Redwynes.

It wasn't until after Aegon's Conquest that Cammen's descendants finally settled into a fixed place in Dorne. When Danwell, the son of Gawain, fought valiantly on the sea for Dorne's freedom. He was awarded lands and lordship, taking the name Osprey for his favorite bird and settling at Eaglesport (yes I made it up :oP). Where he built a modest keep with a great beacon on the top of a tower called Eagle's Eye. It was said that when he went out to sea, his beloved would go to the top of the Eagle's Eye and light the pyre there, and she would wait for her love's return. And when Danwell returned, the first thing he would see was the beacon and he would know that he would soon be back in his lover's arms. And so, whenever the Lord of Eaglesport is out to sea, the beacon is lit until his return.

And it has never been forgotten, that the Ospreys first and foremost belong flying over the sea in their ships.

(note: I spent WAY too much time on this ... I need a life, stat.)

Name: House Hay

Sigil: On a deep green field, three golden sheaves of wheat.

Motto: Reaping the Glory

Unofficial Motto: Scythe of the Seven.

Location: The Riverlands, twenty-three leagues down the Tumblestone from Riverrun. The seat of House Hay is a small but sturdy square castle built hard against the banks of the river, known as Wheatstone. Deep dry trenches lie on the three bank sides, and by opening sluice gates the keep can be turned into a square island, as with Riverrun. The House controls lush and fertile plains famous for their wheat crops.

House Sword: A plain steel bastard sword named "Scythe."

An old, small, but rich and proud House, the Hays of Wheatstone are descended from ancient Andal nobility, and have been sworn to House Tully for nine hundred years. They rose with the Tullys against Harren the Black, and were rewarded by Aegon the Conqueror with Wheatstone and the fertile lands it controlled. During Robert's Rebellion, Lord Mathis Hay and his two elder sons Jon and Brynden remained staunch Targaryen loyalists, but Lord Mathis' youngest son Allyn joined the rebels. Lord Mathis and Brynden were killed and Jon severely wounded at the Battle of Stoney Sept, and Allyn was able to take control of his father's forces and add them to Robert Baratheon's army. After the Rebellion Allyn became Lord of Wheatstone and Jon was sent into exile on the Wall. Rumors persist that Lord Mathis ordered Allyn to join the rebellion, so that the House would survive regardless of which side won, but the family strenuously denies this and any Hay tends to become enraged at the suggestion.

House Hay is most famous for its pious devotion to the Faith of the Seven. Wheatstone holds a beautifully-appointed sept, famous for its seven stained glass windows and great brass bells that can be heard far down the Tumblestone.

Name: House Cougar

Sigil: The Cougar’s House colors are black and scarlet. For their House sigil, the Cougars adopted a mythical beast with the face of an aging but still comely woman attached to the body of a fearsome shadow cat.

House motto: Ours in the kinky

Unofficial motto: The Cougar ladies like ‘em young

Location: Somewhere south of kings landing, where the weather is hottest very late in the day

Originally hailing from Dorne, the Cougars follow the traditional custom of equal primogeniture. Yet they are unique in that over the years, they developed a system of inheritance based on matriarchal principles—the house, lands, and title will be given to the eldest female child; should the Lady produce no female heirs, the family castle, lands, and title will be granted to an aunt or the closest living female relative.

The history of the Cougars is eventful and drenched in myth. Word has it that the House founder, a shadowy figure known as Lady Demi, was in fact a witch who employed a number of arcane rituals and spells to maintain her youthful beauty even in advanced age. Whatever the truth of these rumors, Lady Demi’s open contempt for her aging, paunchy, balding husband, not to mention her habit of employing scantily clad young men to act as her cupbearers, stewards, and personal body servants, did much to encourage the rumors that would led to her blackened posthumous reputation.

When her aging, corpulent, and increasingly balding husband Lord Samwell Tarley I died in mysterious circumstances during a hunting expedition, it led many to whisper of foul play. Such whispers only increased when Lady Demi took a sudden interest in Devan Kettleblack, a lusty, black haired young man of one and twenty; rumored to be the illegitimate son of a local baker. She proceeded to endow him with lands, gold, and a knighthood, for reasons that to this day remain unclear. However, in doing so, some whisper that Lady Demi started a family tradition. It is customary for the ruling females of the Cougar line to express unguarded interest in numerous young men, a trait which increases dramatically after these women reach the age of forty. The fact that lady’s of the cougar house inevitably marry to produce heirs does not deter them from surrounding themselves with dozens of handsome young men. This custom has led to an unofficial motto of sorts: “the cougar lady’s like ‘em young.”

Name: House Vorotar

Sigil: A silver gate-and-wall dividing the upper white field from the lower black.

Motto: Stalwart and Secure.

Unofficial Motto: To the last man.

Location: The North, in a small fertile valley set in the mountains west of Torrhen's Square.

House Weapon: A maul, called Burden, set with a large stone head, banded in iron, with an ironwood haft.

House Vorotar is an old house, although very small. Their ancestral keep is an ancient stone structure known simply as The Gate. Due to the nature of the mountains, the small farming community is nearly unapproachable from any direction but the east, and that is where The Gate lies. At a place where the shear mountain cliffs come close, the walls of The Gate were raised. The Gate is a comprised of a pair of squat towers rising on either side of the grand gate that gives the keep it's name. Stretching from each tower to the cliffs is a pair of parallel stone walls, sheltering a long courtyard between them.

The Lord Vorotar and his family makes their residence in the North Tower, while the South Tower serves as the keep's barracks, as well as the armory. The Gate serves as a significant obstacle to any outside force which wishes to do harm to the community beyond. Because of this, travelers entering the valley are scrutinized at The Gate, and treated suspiciously by those beyond; many of those villagers never travel beyond The Gate in their lifetimes.

The Gate was built by the first Lord Jon Vorotar during the rule of King Rickard, after recieving his lordship due to valor in the Neck. The Gate was not to be finished in his lifetime, though, and was completed during the life of his son, Rickard Vorotar. It was Rickard who had Burden commissioned and built.

During the life of the Lord Roose Vorotar, Torrhen Stark knelt to Aegon the Conqueror. Roose Vorotar gathered together several minor lords in the North, who were not pleased with the idea of kneeling to Aegon, under the guise of friendship only to have them executed and their heads sent to Torrhen. Roose was later deposed and executed by his only son, Rodrick Vorotar, who claimed his father had forsaken his lordship by violating the guest right.

House Vorotar, being a small house commanding no more than three hundred men, took no part in Robert's Rebellion. The Lord Willam Vorotar is currently very ill, and expected to die soon, leaving only his four daughters. However, the Lady Vorotar is pregnant, and the hope is that she will bear her husband a son.

I like it! Kinda like the Whispers? (being on the coast, has a little cove where pirate ships used to go down to, etc.)

House Name: Crippla

House Sigil: Crossed silver crutches over a begging cup on a black background.

Motto: Handily Capable.

Unofficial Motto: Beggars CAN be choosers.

Location: Dothraki Sea, Braavos, Kings Langing, The Citadel, Winterfell(pre-sack), 600 yards off the coast of Old Wyk in a dingy rowing in circles with only 1 oar.

House Weapon(s):

-Valyrian Steel Wheelchair called "Trundling Doom."

-Weirwood Crutch called "The White Assistant."

-Valyrian Steel Begging Cup called "The Collector."

-Weirwood Eye patch with dragon hide straps called "The Patch."

-Back Story-

House Crippla is a very small and ancient house of assassins. Around 1,000 years ago(give or take for leap years), House Crippla was a very strong contender in all the major tournaments across Westeros, unhorsing such names as Ser Mighty the Big, Ser Really the Huge and Ser Bob the Fairly Competent. Unfortunately for House Crippla their Patriarch at the time, Ser Badback was injured at a joust defending his title on the first tilt of the first day in the first hour of the tournament. So disheartened was the king that upon questioning Ser Badback about his plight he received the answer "It's but a scratch." So impressed was the king by Ser Badbacks courage that he promised him a great gift. Nobody saw House Crippla for 4 years 3 months and 12 days.

Then at the next tournament A lone figure was seen at the far end of the list, shrouded in the morning fog on the second tilt of the second day in the second hour of the tournament. The Challenger, Ser Flashsmile of Cleanteeth Castle, remained silent as he walked his horse to meet this strange new challenger. At the call Ser Flashsmile dug in his heels to his horses flank and charged. The strange new challenger also charged, sending up great chevrons of earth from his wheels. Unfortunately for Ser Flashsmile his opponent was some 4 feet tall and he missed completely causing his lance to dig into the ground and catapulting him over the list, right into the path of the strange new challenger. The new challenger never missed a beat and shattered Ser Flashsmiles shield then ran him down with vengeful abandon.

After a great uproar from the crowd the Strange New Challenger doffed his helm to reveal himself as Ser Badback returned. He was ruled as a coward for doing brodies on a man when he's down and sent packing in disgrace. His house was treated with open disdain from then on. House Crippla suffered many military defeats over the next hundred years. His #1 son lost an arm at the Battle of the Fractures, his #2 son was seriously injured at the battle of Broken Knee. His 3rd 4th and 5th sons were all injured at the Battle of the Shattered Hips. At this point Ser Badback had expired and his sons broke apart and dissolved the House proper. They went into hiding and soon started killing off all those who had mocked them over the years earning themselves a reputation a quiet and untraceable assassins. One was exiled to the Free Cities where he settled on the Dothraki Sea becoming a great warlord in his own right, mercilessly driving over his enemies giving the divine gift of Steel Shod death from his Chair. To this day the only publicly known figure is the Crippla Khan of the Dothraki Sea. The rest of the family faded into the winesinks and seedy parts of pivotal cities across Westeros. Each new generation is permanently injured in some way at birth to insure their cover. They have no masters, save only themselves.

-Gods, I have too much free time today.
