Xray the Enforcer

[ADWD SPOILERS] Davos 4

Recommended Posts

This book just stepped up about 10 levels. Until now it was Jon lopping off Janos Slynt's head, a few funny Tyrion lines, and a bunch of filler. All of the sudden I care again.

This.

(I did like Asha as well, though.)

Wex was awesome. He's very believable, Theon mentioned quite a few times that he was very intelligent, so this doesn't come out of nowhere (say, like Baby Aegon Alive).

Wonder what's gonna happen on Skagos.

And what Manderly has in mind for the Boltons and Freys!

I spent the whole last Davos chapter thinking that Wylla was Rickon disguised as à girl. But this is so much more awesome!

Now that all the Northern lords are going to Winterfell, someone has to see that fake Arya is Jeyne Poole. Someone must have seen the girls. And what about Sansa's claim to Winterfell?

Rickon is ahead of her - she's currently considered the Stark claimant to Winterfell only because Bran and Rickon are assumed dead. Bran is ahead of both but is, of course, busy becoming one with the trees.

I didn't mean that Sansa was before Rickon. Since everyone thinks that Rickon is dead, Winterfell should go to Sansa. Why go through the trouble of arranging the "fake Arya marriage" when she is last in line to inherit Winterfell. Sure, Sansa is in hiding, but when she shows up, she has all the right to get Winterfell.

Sansa is attainted and wanted for Joffrey's murder so she's not in the line of succession (if you're pro-Bolton/Tommen regime). With Rickon and Bran dead, that puts Fake Arya as the presumed heir.

I definitely think Skaagos as well.. although, weirdly, I am less worried about meeting these cannibals than I am about Rickon himself. He has lived almost half of his young life without his parents now, and he was already starting to get really wild and angry a year or two ago, and Shaggydog is savage as hell, and now he's on an island with a great big angry wolf who he likely wargs into intentionally or unintentionally without understanding the implications of doing it too often (being too young), a bunch cannibals and a wildling woman... Hmmm... what state is this boy going to be in?

I'm worried about this too. This poor baby has been orphaned (unless Catlin somehow is returned to normal). left to an obviously unstable wildling and a reckless wolf and now he's off with Cannibals. I'm actually very concerned that this is a bad sign of even more bad things to come for Rickon. I'm guessing he's the most likely Stark child to truly go dark on us. And I somehow can't imagine that all will come through their individual quests on the side of the light.

Also, regarding the summons to come "bend the knee"...to The Bastard of Bolton and Freys? Anyone else smell a trap? Wow I hope this "invitation" goes differently--I'm definitely liking the pig lord. Surely the Gods couldn't allow another red wedding...

If a Stark (Preferably Rickon) does not end up as Lord Winterfell, I will be severely disappointed.

Unexpected plot twist was unexpected. I didn't think Davos would die, but that this would happen was unexpected. Lovely writing, mister Martin.

I'm still very confused. Wex was Theon's squire, then why on earth did he decide to go to White Harbor and swear fealthy to Wyman and tell him everything about the assault of Winterfell? Doesn't make much sense to me, that an ironborn would do that by default.

I'm not sure either, maybe he was expecting a reward from Manderly?

I've thought about it and maybe he wants to tell Manderly, Theon's location so they can rescue him and also exculpate him for the so called murder of Bran and Rickon? Still kinda confused though how a mute ironborn shows up in White Harbor and explains everything after what had happened recently.

I didn't think about it myself when I read it, but it is confusing indeed, now I'm thinking about it.

Holy shit, what an awesome chapter. Davos' story in ADWD has been excellent so far. Can't wait to see Skaagos.

So is this Wylis's welcome home Feast?

Because if so then it must occur after 01/04/300 AFFC Jaime 3. In whic Jaime Arrives in Harrenhal and releases Wylis Manderly (amongst other prisoners I think), who is then escorted by Red Ronnet Connington to Maidenpool, from whence he will catch a boat to White Harbour.

If Wylis Manderly is still a prisoner (Jaime mentions in AFFC that he should have been released ages ago).

Then how long since the previous Davos chapter?

Or

AFFC 18: Cersei 4 (mentions Lord’s Declarant of the Vale so Lysa already dead) Ramsay Bolton not yet at Moat Cailin. Hears about Davos being captured by Wyman Manderly. (according to Errant Bard this happened on 08/03/300)

AFFC 25: Cersei 5 Cersei learns that Davos has been beheaded (according to Errant Bard's timeline this occured on the 15/03/300)

Why does GRRM decide to end the Davos chapters here? It seems strange - it seems like the first four Davos chapters are spaced out fairly evenly throughout the first half of the book, but then they all but disappear in the second half. Is GRRM planning something re: Davos and Rickon's return?

Yeah, it seems kind of weird. In AFFC he only had three Sansa/Arya chapter, but they were scattered evenly throughout the book. Maybe he just didn't want to write about yet another character travelling around (I have no idea how long it would take him to get form White Harbor to Skagos) since he's already doing that with Tyrion, Griff, Quentyn, etc. I guess TWOW will start with him arriving on Skagos.

Isn't there at some point the mention of a shipwreck on Skagos? Could it be that Osha and Rickon were going some place else and just wrecked on Skagos?

That would mean that the only lost Stark Samwell has yet to accidentally meet is Sansa, since he already met Bran and talked to Arya in Braavos. ;)

I agree, it was an awesome chapter. Manderly was a surprise for me, but I liked that. The whole "Wex" thing seemed a bit weird, but I'm one of those readers who are very forgiving. I don't want historical fiction and I don't want realism at each and every corner. Reality I have at home. ;o)

The north remembers... and another wedding ahead... I've never been the kind of girl who's looking fiorward to play dress-up for a friend's wedding, but these books have most certainly left me with a stale and bloody taste in my mouth whenever I receive a wedding invitation. The worst and best things always happen at weddings.

it can't be Greywater Watch, Manderly made mention of "sailing dark waters"... so in the Narrow Sea, with chances of cannibalism and unicorns, SKAGOSSSS

i don't get how and why Skagos tho. it wouldn't make sense that Rickon and Osha got aboard a ship on White Harbor, only for Manderly to order Davos to bring them back. but then Wex is in White Harbor, and he's been following the two... until when, we don't know, but we can assume Rickon and Osha took off somewhere near there.

but then the only reason a ship from the east would arrive at Skagos is perhaps to sail toward Eastwatch. otherwise, why would a Westerosi ship want to stop at Skagos? perhaps to trade goods?

another possibility is a shipwreck. but a shipwreck doesn't happen accdg to plan. how could Wex or anyone know Rickon could be in Skagos? and Osha escaped the Wall and meant to go "as far south as south goes." why would she think of going back north? could it be that they only went aboard the ship they could soonest get on, without knowing where it was headed?

sorry, so many questions, we all know these aren't answerable as of now. still, thoughts?

hold on hold on... it says in Rickon's wiki page that Wex " followed Rickon and Osha to Skagos"!? so Wex has been to Skagos and back? this just made things more confusing and leaves me with more questions askljdg;
