LA Book Signing - July 26, 7:00pm

Recommended Posts

Per the SoCal thread, we may or may not go before and after the signing. Right now it looks like Whisper Lounge, which can be changed if anyone has issues with that...

I think so far we have:

-Cuellar

-Blackfyre

-Jordan

-Telisiane

-Elgernon

-aghrivaine +1

-hedgerow

-Venardhi

-Muskrit

Maybes:

-Chanel

-Nim Chimsky

-lockesnow

I live in Culver City, work in Brentwood, so I'm pretty close. I was planning to work in Century City that day so it's closer to the Grove. Not sure if you're looking for a ride or what.

I'm pretty certain to be there at the signing. The question is - how long will it take George to sign everything? Are we trying to stay near the Grove for the after signing gathering? I'm not really a Bev Hills/Hollywood person so am not sure what is around there. Tom Bergin's is a famous dive bar, I think. Canter's Deli for matzo ball soup? Heh. I don't know any bars. Maggiano's Little Italy at the Grove may also have a bar. Not sure if George's preference would be to stay at the Grove or not.

Tar Pit is a lovely bar nearby that's open late. Great atmosphere, good cocktails, really nice, comfy seating. I feel like I would have too much fun renaming their cocktails after ASOIAF characters.

I'm going to be at the signing, hopefully some wristband nonsense won't prevent me getting my books signed. I work in culver but don't reliably get off work until seven (usually it's soft between six and seven and I can leave by six, which I plan on doing, circumstances allowing.

I don't care where we go either, but if you look at the other thread Jordan through out some options. Whisper lounge was the only one located at the mall that sounded good.

I'm open to whatever. There's a cheesecake and a bunch of random places nearby.

I think the reason to meet up before hand was to group up and line up together. Otherwise I have to sit and play angry birds for 2 hours straight...

Ya, that will make it easier on George and hopefully (fingers crossed) he will not be too tired to show up. His flight to NoCal is the next day, not sure what time.

So for places we have:

Whisper Lounge

Tom Bergin's

Canter's Deli

Maggiano's Little Italy

Tar Pit

Cheesecake Factory?

Anyone have a preference?

Aggs, did you see my tweet with InnAtCrossroads about making GoT themed food?

Hi, I'm brand new here, but I'll be at the signing and would love to meet you guys. I...erm... I'm thinking of camping out if I can find a line buddy. If nothing else, I'll definitely arrive early to try to get a wristband. I spoke to a guy at B&N today who seemed nuts but had some good information.

For what it's worth...

The Tar Pit is expensive but delightful.

If the goal is convenience, The Whisper Lounge and the Cheesecake Factory are actually at The Grove so there's no need to drive/re-park.

Here's what I posted last time:

I'd probably suggest meeting after since people will want to show up at different times for the signing probably. Below is a list of places either at The Grove or within walking distance.

LACMA STARK BAR - Little pricey but the name is near perfect.

SHEDDY'S - Hole in the wall bar, cheap drinks, chill atmosphere but often fairly empty.

KIBITZ ROOM - Is actually part of Canter's Deli, rock n roll style, very laid-back.

VODVIL - a game night locale. not open yet but I've been in and it looks awesome.

WHISPER LOUNGE - right in the grove but off from the main strip. great drinks, food, and has both indoor and outdoor area.

Inside the Farmer's Market there's a little bar I forget the name of but it's very cool. If you look on Yelp I'm sure there are more places nearby but that's just what I pulled from the top of my head.

I also want to toss in a little Irish place MOLLY MALONE'S I haven't been to yet but always drove by. While the Grove is easier, with 1000 or so people showing up at the other signings I don't know if it could be a mob situation or anything (I really have no idea!). It looks like the usually have live music but there's no one playing Tuesday according to their calendar so there should be no worry of a cover charge.

EL CARMEN is also a little Mexican place down 3rd with a bar and food at it and has great reviews. Their website isn't too informative so I'll add their Yelp page.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/el-carmen-los-angeles

There's also a few good places on Melrose which is right up the street as well like The Village Idiot (http://www.villageidiotla.com), Snakepit Alehouse (http://www.snakepitalehouse.com), Melgard (http://www.melgardpublichouse.com/), and the Parlor (http://www.theparlorca.com/). I've only been to the first three though my roommates frequent the last. I'd probably recommend the Snakepit Alehouse since I don't think I've ever seen it crowded so we'd probably have the place mostly to ourselves or Melgard since it also has the large outdoor area.

It really depends on what kind of vibe you are looking for. Like I said, I live right up the street so hopefully I can find the best place for us. Sorry for ten million suggestions, I just want to give you guys a range of options!

I may not make the signing, but I'll definitely be there for whatever happens afterwards.

For George's sake I think getting at least a little bit away from the event would be helpful in letting him actually relax a bit. On the other hand, he might prefer to be able to just walk across the plaza to get there. Either way works for me.

Per the BN website:

This will be a wristbanded event. Wristband distribution will begin at 9:00 am on July 26 with the purchase of a George R.R. Martin book. There is a two-book limit per wristbanded guest. Photos from signing line only. No personalization.

Forgive me if I'm sharing information people already know.

The guys I spoke to at B&N told me:

-- People have been known to camp out for major signings. You're not allowed on the main Grove thoroughfare (you know, the one with the trolley that goes nowhere) after hours, but you can line up next to the Banana Republic.

-- Wristbands will be passed out at 9 am and will be ordered by color or letter. People line up by priority about two hours prior to the start of the signing.

-- I was told that you must have a B&N receipt (or purchase your book when you get your wristband) or no signing.

The Stark bar at LACMA has amazing cocktails. It's a really fun space, but the seating is all outside and I don't know if you can reserve a couch/table/whatever.

Molly Malone's often has live music and can get pretty loud.

I've been debating camping out as well, if you're still looking for a line buddy and don't mind that I'm also new here. In any case, thanks for sharing the signing info.

In terms of bars, thought I'd mention that Tom Bergin's recently changed ownership and will be closed until September.

Thanks for the info! Does this mean that they expect folks to camp out to get wristbands? Hrm.....not a good sign since I won't be able to get there until noon or so.
