What Movie Did You Watch Recently?

I just watched the Coen Brothers True Grit (never seen the John Wayne one). I enjoyed it, though I didn't really care for the ending and had trouble understanding Jeff Bridges' lines. The girl playing Mattie (?) was really good, one of the best child performances I think I've seen.

I thought that movie was pretty sweet and for once a fairly realistic portrayal of the old west.

Watched Knight and Day with my wife the other night and it predictably sucked. Really no redeeming qualities.

Also watched Inception a couple weeks ago and thought it was pretty good even though the dream within a dream within a dream was getting to be a bit much.

Well, after discovering the GF trilogy for the first time, I have been on a gangster flick bend, for some reason. Believe it or not, I didn't actually see any of them previously. Luckily, my library has most of the good ones.

So, I watched Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, Casino and Heat in quick succession, which are brilliant (the former 2) to good IMHO. Made me really feel the current drought of good new films. There is almost no reason to go to the movie theater currently, 3D or no 3D :(.

Though I have to say that I was amazed and horrified to learn how all-pervasive mafia used to be in the US and how it managed to completely subvert labor unions, politics, etc. I mean, I know that there are corruption and back deals everywhere but that was so... brazen. So directly connected to the street crime scene. And it took place in one of the richest countries in the world too, not in the poor ones, as I'd expect.

In fact, I kind of wonder how anybody managed to achieve anything relatively honestly under such conditions. Gives me hope for modern Russia et al. though ;).

I totally agree with you. Contemporary movies seem to lack dept and meaning. All the superficial imagery become predominant and deciding factor. For example Avatar. No doubt technically Avatar was superb movie. But it falls short when it comes to storyline, characterizing and meaning. Let's just consider 2001: Space Odyssey. It was technically groundbreaking and so advanced in its era like Avatar. Even after 40 years we still marvel at its technical achievement. Yet it had such a profound meaning and thought provoking storyline. Contemporary movies became more shallow.

Since you have been on a Gangster movie kick of recent, i have some more suggestions for you. All these are true classics in their own rights some newer than others.

Carlitos Way, Pachino doing his thing

Gotti, This one will be hard to find, it was an HBO documentary stlye movie about the life of Jon Gotti.

City of God, Documentary style movie about real events in an area of Brazil. All Subtitles.

King of New York, Christopher Walking kicking ass and taking names.

American Gangster, Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe, based on real life events.

Brother, An amazing movie, hard as hell to find anywhere. You may have to go to china town in the city you live or go to a near by city that has a china town to find a copy of this movie. It has subtitles and English speaking in it.

So theres just a few good Gangsta movies off the top of my head with IMDB links so you can look through them.

I thought i make a movie suggestion, to all those out there who really want to watch something different. Theres a great Japanese movie called Battle Royale, compared to what we have in north America it would probably considered over the top. Its a good movie, messed up but good. If you don't mind Subtitles check this one out.

Say Ice Crow! Want over the Top? Try "What's Up, Tiger Lily" by Woody Allen.

If not, do you want some Corn? :leer:

Anyhow, I just watched Slumdog Millionaire last night. Epic.

If you want a gangster movie by Kitano, then Sonatine is the one to pick.

Im gonna hit China Town here ion Toronto this weekend, see if i can hunt this down. It looks badass, thanks for the suggestion. Kitano is like Japans Pachino, the man was made to play a gangster.

Watched Bladerunner for the first time. I thought it was pretty weird and really good actually. It was interesting to see what the world is going to be like in 8 years. I was wondering what the deal was with the origami unicorn thing at the end. Was that something left by the other cop/bladerunner or whatever signifying he could have killed or taken Rachel? That seems a little redundant though since his last words to Harrison Ford established that for me.

Deckard has a dream about a unicorn earlier in the film, so the origami one implies that the other cop knew what he was dreaming about, in much the same way that Deckard knew about Rachel's memories...

Yeah, Felice is right. I think Ridley Scott shoot that scene to imply Deckard might be an android himself. It's open and ongoing debate. Nowadays movies tend to self-explanatory and conclusive. People blame studios for spoon-feeding. Early films were thought provoking and audience would start thinking as they left theater.

I don't know. You can say that about the late 60s and 70s but generally populism has always won out in Hollywood. You can still find provoking movies today if you look beyond the tent pole blockbuster.

The Blind Side & Secretariat (again).

I know The Blind Side isn't an exact portrayal, but it was a good watch.

Secretariat...same...not a documentary of the Triple Crown, but still just amazed at what that team was able to do.

I saw The Lovely Bones last week just on the off chance, since they had it on HBO during the afternoon and I was home. It wasn't bad. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. For those who weren't aware, it was a very popular book. (I don't recall that it was mentioned here much.) The screenplay was written by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, and Peter Jackson, directed by Peter Jackson.

The young girl lead was heartbreakingly played by Saoirse Ronan, and she really made it. Other than the creepy neighbor (who is quite detestable and quite well played), all the other roles were sort of skimmed over. Most of the effort was put into the beautiful imagery. Unfortunately, that left little screen time for the other players.

I'd still recommend it. Although, if you have kids, be forewarned - not because of how they'll take it, but how you will.

I didn't like the book all that much but wanted to see how my neighbour would go making it into a movie. I liked the movie less because the depth and subtlety in the book was missing. I think they took the adaptation in the wrong direction, focussing too much on the wrong characters. The visuals were nice though. Stanley Tucci was excellent as the villain. What a great and versatile actor.

I had Limitless thrust upon me recently, and to my surprise I really liked it. It's great when that happens. I'm starting to really like Bradley Cooper as an actor.
