DirePenguin
Is there any reference from the book about what the word "seal" imply? Is the word Seal refering to an animal? An emblem? Or something else?

Man of Many Faces
I always assumed it was the animal, that they were just a lot of them there. GRRM mentions a lot of people who live close to the water or up north in the cold, wear cloaks lined with seal fur.

Arataniello
In some of the Iron Island chapters, some of the Ironborn are rumored to be able to turn into seals (the Farwynds of Far Light?). So there are clearly pinnipeds in Westeros, and that is what the Bay of Seals is named after.
Whitering
In ADWD Davoos notes seals on the rocks near White Harbour, or am I mistaken? They obviously exist in Westeros.

Werthead
So there are clearly pinnipeds in Westeros, and that is what the Bay of Seals is named after. Plus, y'know, we have a seal as a major character, likely to appear in the HBO show. I hear he'll be a POV in TWoW. "The pinniped that was promised." Jaak
Or is the bay named after Lord Privy Seal?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVlfvdH7qwYTommen certainly loves his seal.

Arataniello
In Jon's chapters, the wildlings' treasures include some carved walrus tusks (?). And isn't one of the leaders of the Free Folk called The Walrus, or something along those lines? Further evidence that the entire series is based on GRRM's regard for the flippered species of the sea.
