Haha, just saw that. What a tosspot.

Hope everyone's enjoying the day though . I'm off to the city for my last Perth Skyshow. You going to the beach Gill?

We might wander down if it cools off enough, and we lay off the wine we're drinking, but we can see some of hillary's fireworks from here, so may just lay back and take it easy. Tom has cooked some lamb shanks.

From what I saw it looks like the security team went a bit over the top.

And Abbott, while not trying to incite a race riot knew exactly what he was doing when he made those comments.

I just saw the 10-day weather forecast for Sydney...made me want to unpack my bags! Is it usually like this in Jan/Feb?

@Ser Scot: Our opposition leader (once dubbed by the PM as the love-child of Sarah Palin and Donald Trump) made some incendiary remarks about an indigenous protest. Some people got angry about it and interrupted the PM's lunch. Security and the police overreacted. General hilarity, laughter and much face-palming ensued. All par for the course really where Canberra is concerned.

It's usually hot and humid- but recntly we're getting semitropical with a wet summer. ( and this summer , summer didn't get the memo to get here pronto)

Remember that the security team is not only there for the PM, but also to ensure security of the situation. Their rationale was that the restaurant was not secure and was packed with dozens of 'innocent' civilians, all encased in a box of plate glass. The thinking was that by removing the politicians, the situation would be defused for the greater good.

Hey Pax, how is Perth treating you? Hot enough for ya yet? ;)

I don't about Pax, but it was 40 and we had a thunderstorm yesterday. It pissed down for about an hour last night but it didn't make any difference to the heat.

It's 8.15am here and it feels like it's bloddy 40 already today.

Yeah, I had a proper gander at the papers this morning and fair enough.

As a Canberran I can understand how some may want the tent embassy to be dismantled. It is quite ramshakle, but we have accepted it for 40 odd years.

Tony Abbott went about it the wrong way. And saying what he did on Australia Day, when the tent embassy crowd swells dramatically, well, not a great move.

The Tent Embassy is going nowhere anytime soon. Free rent, free water, free ameneties (minus electricity) and some of the most prime real estate in the Parliamentary Triangle.

(there is a book in this, I'm thinking something like: 'Too Stupid To Breathe, a Brief History of Sheer and Total Idiocy in the Highest Echelons of the ALP 2008-2012')

PM's staffer resigns after passing on info

The federal coalition has called for an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the resignation of a member of Prime Minister Julia Gillard's media unit.

The news comes after a protest on Thursday by tent embassy supporters that sparked a security scare at a Canberra restaurant.

It also follows claims made on Macquarie Radio by broadcaster Ray Hadley that someone from her office had contacted the tent embassy in Canberra to tell protesters the location of Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, who was with Ms Gillard.

While the media adviser - named as Tony Hodges - did not directly tell tent embassy organisers where Mr Abbott was, the person he did tell passed that information on.

"A member of the Prime Minister's media unit did call another individual yesterday and disclosed the presence of the Opposition Leader at the Lobby restaurant," a spokesperson said in a statement.

"This information was subsequently passed onto a member of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy."

Otherwise I hope everyone had a lovely Australia Day.

First Australia Day I did not have to work! So I was pretty pumped. Alas, I did not get on it like last year after my shift, I gym-ed it up and went for a run. For me, no beer on Australia day was pretty hard, but I couldn't end my new workout plan.

That's commitment, Eomer! I also hit the gym, and again today, but that's because I hike the Routeburn Track in a week and half so every bit of fitness counts. Currently they're having winter conditions in NZ's southern alps with snow down to 1200m, so that's something to look forward to!

My new workout plan was only in it's second week so I had to be committed haha. Or I would have been partying it up like the rest of my fellow Aussies. Having a beer now (XXXX Summer) to make up for it though. But It won't be at an Australia Day pace. I have never been to the snow, I must see it one day!

Nobody started an Aussie Open thread, so a quick comment here; it's 5:20 AM stateside, and I don't know why the hell I'm up, but that was a dominant-ass performance from Azarenka in the final. And even still, she was so stunned when she finally won; even during the trophy presentation, she looked like she was in shock. Cute kid.
