House Targaryen

Mafia 84: The Festival of Lights

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year again! Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Jingle bells. Peace and goodwill to all mankind.

And what better way to celebrate this magical season than...

...a Hanukkah-themed Mafia game!

What's that, you might say? But you know nothing and care even less about Hanukkah? But you had your heart set on a game with Santa Claus and reindeers? But Hanukkah is a forgettable minor holiday commemorating Judea's independence from the Seleucid Empire in 165 B.C.E. that no one would have heard of were it not the only Jewish holiday that falls in December (thus allowing schools to be politically correct and "inclusive" by having a token Hanukkah song in their Christmas pageant, and Jewish children to nag their parents to leave them Hanukkah presents under the Hanukkah bush so they can fit in with their gentile friends)?

Well, too bad. If the mod has to suffer through Christmas music, Christmas advertising, Christmas parties, Christmas TV specials, Christmas movies, Christmas store displays, and Christmas latte flavours being shoved in her face every day for two months, then you can play a game about Hanukkah.

This game will start on Monday, December 12th Wednesday, December 14th. PM House Targaryen Hanukkah Harry if you'd like to play. I (Mina) am modding, and Zar Lannister is comodding.

Game Mechanics

1 - General Structure

Players may begin posting as soon as the mods announce that the game has started on the thread. The game begins during the day. The day ends when when a sufficient number of people have voted to lynch a player (remove that player from the game) or voted to end the day without a lynch. The mods will post maximum time limits for the length of a day on the game thread. If no consensus is reached when the time expires, the day ends with no lynch. When the day phase has ended, night begins. The mods will then post a scene reporting the outcome of the day. Players may continue posting in the thread but no voting is allowed. Night ends when the mods post the morning scene reporting the outcome of the night actions. Day and night phases continue to alternate until the game ends.

2 - Day Phase

During the day, players may post in the thread and vote. Some roles may have special powers which can be used during the day. See the role list for details.

2.1 - Voting Mechanics

To vote for a player: bold that player's name.

To vote to end the day without a lynch: bold the word night.

To change your vote: bold the other player's name (or bold night).

To remove your vote without casting a new vote: bold the phrase remove vote.

2.2 - Voting Restrictions

You may only vote during the day phase. You can only have one vote outstanding at any time. You may not vote for yourself. You may not edit a vote into a post. You may not edit a vote out of a post.

2.3 - Bold Restrictions

The use of bold should be limited to voting, except in some cases and for some specific roles. If you want to emphasize a players name or another word, you can underline the word or post using a different color

2.4 - Majority Defined

A majority means either more than half of the active players voting for one player's lynch or half or more of the active players voting to go to night without a lynch.

2.5 - Ending the Day

The day ends as soon as a majority is reached (or, if the players fail to vote for any action, once the time limit for the day has elapsed). Anyone lynched is no longer an active player and must not post in the thread. Votes can no longer be withdrawn and new votes cannot be cast until the night phase ends.

2.6 - Evening Scene

The mods will post a scene shortly after the day ends to report the results of the day actions. If the day ended with a player's lynch, the mods will also reveal the alt and alignement (innocent/evil) of the lynched player. Symps will turn up as "innocent".

3 - Night Phase

During the night, players may post in the thread but may not vote. Some players will have the ability to perform special actions. See the role list for details.

3.1 - Performing a Night Action

If your role includes the ability to perform a special action at night, you need to PM the mods to indicate the action you wish to take. Most, if not all, roles have the ability to "withhold" their powers (i.e. take no action). This will be made clear in the description of the role: see the role list. If you chose to not perform your allowed action, you must PM "no action" to the mods. The game will also have a time limit on the maximum length of a night. All players must PM their night actions to the mods within this timeframe. Players are strongly encouraged to send their night actions as soon as possible: you may also send in a PM for your special action during the day phase.

3.2 - Contingent PM

If you send in a PM during the day phase, you may choose to list alternative actions contingent on the manner in which the day ended. If none of the contingencies you list actually occur, your PM will be disregarded, and you must send a new PM to the mods.

3.3 - Provisional PM

You may choose to send a provisional PM if you want to further consider your night action but do not want to extend the night if all other roled players have decided upon their actions. Provisional PMs must be clearly marked as such. A provisional PM will not be acted upon by the mods until it becomes a 'definite PM.' A provisional PM becomes definite as soon as ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM, ( b ) all other roled players that need to send night actions have done so, or ( c ) the time limit for the night has expired.

As a courtesy to other players we ask that you confirm your provisional PM as soon as you are able.

3.4 - Last Resort PM

In extraordinary circumstances you may be allowed to send in a last resort PM. A last resort PM will not be acted upon by the mods until ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM or ( b ) the time limit for the night has expired. Should you need to send a last resort PM, you must first seek the mods approval by explaining the circumstances that necessitate such a PM. Last resort PMs are accepted only at the discretion of the mods.

3.5 - Failure to PM

If not all PMs are received within the time limit, everyone who has failed to send in a PM will be considered to have taken no action. In addition, those who failed to send in a PM will be warned by the mods or may risk further penalties.

3.6 - Changing a Night Action

PMs to the mod can be changed at any point before the new day is announced. A PM is considered to be changed only after the mod receives and has read the PM. The player bears the risk that the mod will post the morning scene after the player has sent in a new PM but before the mod has actually read it. In this case the action originally indicated will be performed.

3.7 - Abusing the Time Limit

The time limit for the night begins as soon as the previous day ended, regardless of when the mods posted the evening scene. However, this time limit is a maximum limit, and all players should send in PMs as soon as they feel comfortable doing so. Players (and mods) prefer shorter nights, as people are anxious to see who may have died and to begin voting again. If the mods feel that a player is abusing the time limit by unreasonably stalling, they may force the player to take no night action or take other appropriate action.

3.8 Preventing Night Actions

Except where expressly noted, no night actions prevent any other night actions sent in from taking effect.

3.9 - Morning Scene

The night phase ends when the mods post the morning scene. The mods will post the scene shortly after all night action PMs have been received. The scene will report any player deaths that occurred during the night, and will reveal the alts of all of the players killed. There are no hidden clues in the morning scenes. As soon as the scene is posted any players who have been killed at night will no longer be active players and can no longer post in the thread. The time limit for the new day will begin with the morning scene.

Section 4 - Endgame

The game will continue to alternate between day and night phases until the game ends. The game can end after either a day or night phase.

4.1 - Winning Conditions

The game ends once one faction has reached its winning conditions, which the mods will state in the game thread.

Mafia is a team game. Once one faction achieves its winning conditions, all members of that faction have won whether or not they are active players when the winning conditions are achieved.

4.2 - Ending Scene

The mods will post an ending scene and declare the game over shortly after one faction achieves its winning conditions. If for any reason it becomes impossible for either faction to achieve its winning conditions, the mods will declare the game a draw.

The game is only over when a mod posts the ending scene. Even if you know (or believe you know) the result of the game before then, you may not post in the thread unless you are an active player.

4.3 - Calling the Game Early

The mods reserve the right to end the game at any time before a faction achieves its winning conditions provided there are compelling reasons to do so. In general, the mods will end the game early as soon as one faction's victory becomes inevitable.

4.4 - Spoilers

When the game is over, the mods will reveal the alts and roles of everybody who played and also give everyone access to the spoiled spectator threads on the discussion board.

All players must ..

A1) Have an account on the mafia discussion board, with the same account name as on the main board.

A2) Log in and view the game thread and the discussion board anonymously at all times, unless they have informed the mods that this is not possible for technical reasons. (If you see that somebody playing isn't viewing the thread anonymously, don't post this information on the thread, because that would be silly.)

A3) Post at least once every 24 hours. Following the end of Night 1, any player who has not posted within the last 24 hours will be automatically modkilled, whether or not the mods announce this on the thread.

There will be no modkills due to inactivity on day/night 1. If a modkill (of any kind) is appropriate before the end of night 1, a replacement will be sought, and a modkill will only be used as a last resort.

The mods may grant extensions to this 24 hour time limit in some cases. Please contact the mods as early as possible if you wish to request an extension. The modkill limit will certainly be extended over the weekend; see the game thread itself for details.

A4) Send in role prescribed night actions (including the desire to take no action) within the time limit. (The mods encourage players to send in night actions before night falls, if this is practical and won't unduly influence your choice of action).

A5) Treat everybody involved in the game with courtesy and respect.

A6) Make any edits the mods request of them as soon as possible, whether or not they believe that the posts need to be edited.

A7) Contact the game mods as soon as possible if you feel you are at risk of breaking a rule or fear they or another person may have already done so. (Please do not post about possible rule violations on the thread itself.)

Players must not ...

B1) Act in any way intended to reduce the chance of their faction achieving its win conditions. (However, should all surviving members of the evil faction agree that they wish to resign and end the game early, they may do so by PMing the mods privately, without stating their intentions on-thread until the mods post to announce that the game is over.)

B2) Discuss the game with any other living players outside this game thread except when told they may do so in their role PMs.

B3) Reveal any information about the game at all in any other thread than this one, or in any other forum (including message boards and chat rooms) where it may be seen by a living player.

B4) Give anybody but the mods access to any of their accounts (including game alts), either here or on the mafia discussion board.

B5) Attempt to obtain advice about the game from anybody not currently playing.

B6) Post information on the thread relating to another player's past or current activity on (or absence from) the board that would not otherwise be available to anybody reading the thread.

B7) Quote, in whole or part, PMs from (or other private conversations with) the mods on the thread, or discuss the timing of any PMs sent to the mods.

B8) Post on the thread at any time after they are dead until the mods themselves post on the thread to announce that the game is over. Any posts made (accidentally or otherwise) after death should be immediately edited blank.

B9) Make any bets about the game.

B10) Make any posts to the game thread with any account other than their game alt, before the game is over. Any posts made "out-of-alt" should be edited blank as soon as possible.

B11) Speculate about the identify behind the alt of any living player, expose the identity of any living player or provide information that the mods consider reasonably likely to cause a person's identity to be exposed.

B12) Offer to break any of these rules or any other rules the mods have set in place for the game, encourage others to do so or help to conceal the fact that rules have been broken.

C1) Failure to comply with the rules may result in any punishment the mods deem appropriate, including, but not limited to: a request to edit posts; formal warnings on thread; "modkilling", and ending the game prematurely in favor of one faction or none. The mods will also report rule infractions to the metamods after the game. Except where clearly stated in the rules, the mods are free to respond to any rules violation in whatever manner they wish. In all cases the mods' decision on these matters is final.

C2) Feel free to PM or IM your thoughts (or questions) to the mods. We love to hear them!

C3) The mods reserve the right to amend the rules during the game if we realize we've forgotten to cover something. Or, you know, if we have any other reason.

As well as running the game on this thread, the mods are also responsible for administering the spoiler thread on the discussion board. Anybody not actively involved in the game (whether spectators or dead players) can request access to this thread by PMing the mods. Please note that while in general the mods will be happy to let anybody have access to this thread, they do reserve the right to refuse access to anybody for any reason. In particular, players who are modkilled for inactivity will not be spoiled. Accordingly, please do not ask anybody other than the mods for access to the spoiler thread or give yourself access to it, even if you have the power to do so.

Once given access to the thread, spoiled spectators should also take note of the following rules, and must not ...

D1) Share any information from the spoiler thread with living players, or post such in a forum where it may be seen by living players.

D2) Offer any advice, hints or strategy to living players.

D3) Make personal attacks on players in the game or on posters in the spoiler thread itself

D4) Post on the game thread before the mods announce that the game is over.

Spectators (of any sort) who ignore these rules are likely to have their access to the spoiler thread revoked and to be reported to the metamods.

The game will use a system based on item mechanics. Most abilities, rather than be assigned to the player at the beginning of the game, can be used through a combination of items (some of which are exhaustible and of limited quantity). Some items are assigned to players at the beginning of the game, while others can be bought/won from the pot.

I'd like to push the start of the game back to Tuesday or Wednesday, because although I can have a running game up by tomorrow, it'll probably be a game with a crippling flaw in design. If anyone reading this has a problem with either of those start dates, PM me.

If an experienced player with a good head for math and balance is reading this and can't play, I'd love your help reviewing/balancing the set-up, even if you don't have time to mod.

Greetings everyone!

The Game start has been pushed until Wednesday. If anybody not playing would like to have unspoilt spectator access and has a Mafia board account, please PM Hanukkah Harry.

Who can mod mafia games btw? This is my first mafia game here, but I'm not a newbie to mafia and I've been itching to try a Battlestar Galactica themed role madness setup that I've recently come up with.

Days will be thirty-two hours long, nights eight hours long.

New rules as of Day Two: All bids, actions, and transfers must be sent in a PM titled "Night Action" (or "Night Actions"), whether you are roled or RI. Otherwise, your action or bid will not count. (PMs entitled "Wait, I changed my mind!" do not count, either.) I'm sorry to be anal-retentive about this, but it makes our jobs ten times easier.

In addition, I will wait no longer than one hour after the deadline for every RI in the game to confirm that he or she wishes to perform an ability, bid, or transfer. (In practice, I'm slow and take a long time to resolve all actions, so night will usually last longer than that.) Therefore, if you are intending to bid or transfer anything, but want to deliberate or see what's in the pot, send me a PM asking me to wait, with the heading "Night Action." In that case, I would hold the night for you.

PM me if you have any questions or notice something I've overlooked.

If the following rules are too complicated, feel free to ignore the item mechanics and play like an RI. :P

What you know about the set-up:

After the Maccabees have kicked the Greeks out of Jerusalem and reclaimed the Holy Temple as the seat of their new fundamentalist theocracy, they discover that they only have enough oil to keep the holy Menorah burning for one day. As you wait for their messenger to return from the eight-day journey to bring more oil, you realize that a miracle is happening: the oil still hasn't been used up! (You also realize that Hanukkah is a lame holiday, and wonder why I'm basing a game off it.) However, some of the priests in the temple are secret Hellenist sympathizers who long for the way things were before the Hasmonean rebellion. They work for the forces of evil and natural combustion, and try to sabotage the light of the Menorah by slitting the throats of loyal priests at night.

There will be a Killer/NaK CF. (Alignments will not be revealed.) If an innocent is lynched or killed, a light of the Chanukiah goes out. No, that doesn't mean there are only eight innocents in a fifteen-player game. Just...accept that it makes sense somehow. A symp will CF as an innocent.

Maccabees win when all the Hellenists are dead as long as there is at least one Maccabee alive.

Hellenists win when they outnumber the Maccabees or when nothing can prevent this from happening.

A. Each player in the game starts off with twenty gelt. Some players will also be distributed items (randomly or otherwise) at the start of the game. In addition, there is a public group pot with certain items as well as a mystery amount of starting gelt.

B. Items are divided into two categories: permanent (P) and exhaustible (E). Permanent items can be used repeatedly, as long as they are still in your possession. Exhaustible items can only be used once; afterwards, they are removed from the game.

Examples of a permanent item that is guaranteed to be in the game:

Candle (P): Due to the miracle of Hanukkah, candles burn for a full eight days instead of one...which is coincidentally about the longest a fifteen-player game can last. So in practice, once you have a candle, you can use the same candle to perform as many candle-related abilities as you want.

Example of an exhaustible item that is guaranteed to be in the game:

Oil (E): As probably the only element of Hanukkah that has any miraculous significance (rather than just commemorating the historical establishment of a fundamentalist theocratic state in ancient Judea), oil is multipurpose. It plays a part in many Hanukkah traditions.

Items all have flavour text similar to this. I will grant FM the option to ask for the flavour text associated with items. If it is in the game, I will provide the exact quote; if it is NOT in the game, I will make a plausible-sounding quote up.

Some items may or may not have additional restrictions or mechanics attached to them, of which you are unaware.

C. Items change hands the following ways:

1) Bidding on items in the pot.

2) Item transfers.

3) Spinning the dreidel.

4) Death.

1) Bidding: Every player starts off the game with twenty gelt. Each night, you may bid 1 gelt or more on ONE item in the pot (you may not bid on the mystery gelt). Whoever bids the most on that item wins it. If two players bid the same price on an item, neither one gets it. Once you successfully bid on an item, the gelt you spend is permanently removed from the game, although there is no penalty for failed bids.

This also applies with multiples of the same item. For example, if there are two oils in the pot, Player A bids 15 gelt on oil, and Players B and C bid 10 gelt on oil, then Player A wins one oil, but the second oil remains in the pot.

You may not pool your gelt together with another player to bid on an item. However, you may transfer gelt to another player (see step 2) which he may then use the following night to bid on items.

2) Item transfers: Items can only be transfered at night. You may ask Hanukkah Harry to give items and/or any amount of Hanukkah gelt to the player(s) of your choice.

The player will only be informed of the items he was given the following morning. If he is killed, your items are returned to the pot; if you are killed, he still receives your gift. Items gifted can only be used the following night.

3) Dreidel: The dreidel is an added swing component. At the beginning of the game, I will randomize the dreidel order. Each day, the living player at the top of the list gets a turn to spin it, unless he has already spinned it (in which case there are no more dreidl rounds). The player will be announced in the morning scene.

When the lynch or no-lynch scene is posted, in addition to the flip, I will also publicly reveal how the dreidel has landed.

Nun (random.org = 1): Nothing happens.

Gimmel (random.org = 2): You win everything in the pot! A new mystery amount will then be added to the now-empty pot.

Hey* (random, org = 3): You may select one item from the pot, or half of the gelt in the pot.

Shin* (random.org = 4): You must select an item OR (if you have more than zero gelt) at least half of your gelt to add to the pot. Note that you may choose to leave more than half your gelt if you wish. (See if you can guess why this rule is in here.)

*You MUST PM Hanukkah Harry your choice for either hey or shin sometime before the lynch. If you do not, I will random.org the item you give or take.

The item you give or take WILL be publicly disclosed (and in the case of a shin, will be available for players to bid on that night); however, the amount of gelt you give or take will be secret.

4) Death: When a player is lynched or killed, all his possessions as well as the amount of Hanukkah gelt he has will be publicly revealed. This is then added to the pot. Players may bid on the items the lynched player had in his possession that night.

A. You may only use one ability each night, even if you have enough items to perform several abilities. You must already have the correct number of items in order to perform an ability. Using the ability removes all the exhaustible items associated with its cost from the game (although permanent items remain in your possession). You may use items that you just received from spinning the dreidl, but items that are transferred to you or that you're bidding on that night may only be used for an ability the following night.

B. You know that every RI has access to the following abilities.

Freeze (Cost: Candle (P) + Oil (E) x 1)

According to Jewish law, you may not use the light of the Chanukiah for any active purpose. Targeting someone with this blocks all item transfers and bids. It does not block active abilities.

Guard (Cost: Candle (P) + Oil (E) x 2)

You may also not use the fire of the Hanukkah candles for work. This more powerful version acts as a standard guard which blocks all active abilities (including kills if there is only one FM alive). It does not stop item transfers or bids. (Make sure to distinguish between Freeze and Guard when you select a night action.)

Schmooze (Cost: Sufganiot (E) x 1)

These delicious jelly donuts will win anyone over. Offer this to the player of your choice, and from the next morning onward, you'll be able to chat privately with that person in a secret forum (until one of you dies, that is). Neither of your alignments will be revealed to each other.

Counterfeit (Cost: 1 Chocolate coin (E) per Hanukkah gelt)

In their golden wrappers, these chocolate coins can easily be mistaken for real money. For every chocolate coin you use, you will receive one Hanukkah gelt from the pot unless there is not enough money in the pot. (For example, if you spend five chocolate coins, but the mystery amount of gelt in the pot is 4G, you will lose all five chocolate gelt and gain four Hanukkah gelt. I will announce the next morning that there is no more mystery gelt in the pot.) If more coins by multiple players are spent than there are coins in the pot, priority goes to whoever spends the most coins. Like with bidding on items, two players counterfeiting the same amount when there is not enough in the pot for both of them will result in nothing happening. (For example, if there are twelve gelt in the pot, one player uses eight chocolate coins, and two more use three each, Player 1 will trade his eight coins for eight gelt, but Players 2 and 3 will keep their chocolate, and the remaining four gelt will stay in the pot.)

Sicken (Cost: Latke (E) x 1)

These toxic, greasy concoctions are inexplicably popular. Feed one to the player of your choice, and he will be forced to discard one item of his choice. If he has no items, he must discard all his gelt instead. The item he selects will not be publicly revealed, and will be removed permanently from the game (NOT returned to the pot). You may feed yourself a latke if you choose.

Poison (Cost: Latke (E) x 2)

Eating more than one of these is hazardous to your health. If you feed the player of your choice two latkes, he will be informed the following morning that he was poisoned (although not by whom) and drop dead the following night. E.g., if you feed him two latkes on N1, your target will know of his imminent death and will be able to perform all actions on N2, but he will die on the morning of D3 (as if he were vig-killed on N2).

There may or may not be abilities/actions that can only be unlocked or used by certain players.

C. Idols: Some among you miss the Greek culture that was de rigeur in Judea before the uprising, when you could study Aristotle, eat pork, and compete at the local gymnasium. You abandoned the Jewish faith you were raised in and turned to paganism and idol worship.

Abilities triggered by idols can only be used by Hellenists/evils. Idols are all exhaustible; once it is used by a player, it is removed from the game.

The following idols may or may not be in the game.

Athena Idol (E): An evil player may use this to determine all items and gelt in the possession of the player of his choice. This resolves before any transfers/bids his target makes that night.

Zeus Idol (E): If an FM uses this idol, his team's kill is unblockable that night (cannot be used by a symp).

Thor Idol (E): If an evil player uses the idol that night, then if he is lynched the next day, the player who hammers him will die. If he is NOT lynched, then the idol is lost anyway and the ability has no effect.

Yes. I am aware that today is Wednesday, December 14th (and technically the 15th in EST). Yes, as some of you have mentioned in your PMs, it's long past 8 AM OR 8 PM, and you're all pissed off that the game didn't start this morning when most of you have gone to bed. I'm sorry to have kept you all waiting.

I haven't forgotten about this game or been neglecting it. You don't need to remind me; it's just taken me forever to get everything organized. I will send you your log-in information when I get home.

Edit: Role PMs are all out!

I'm ashamed that all I know about Hannukah is from Friends.

Ok guys, so just checking in for the moment. Have to go to work, but will be back later to read the absurdly amount of new things in this game. Which, btw, I think is awesome, although it could really result in a serious headache... Anyways.. I'm off, see you guys later throughout the day.
