what does "in a fit of guilt" mean?

A "fit" is a very sudden emotional reaction, like something you might regret later. Like something done or said in a "fit of anger/rage". A little milder than a tantrum, but definitely something that might make you do something you would otherwise have avoided doing. So he did feel guilty, but it may have been momentarily induced by his mother/father's look, for example.

Greetings,

Steph
