(Book Spoilers) The Hound

Also, for those that are worried about us not seeing anything, I really would not worry.

-HBO's web site has the character description of Sandor Clegane flat out stating that he has a "soft spot for Sansa Stark."

-There is also an interview with one of the producers, I forget which, who explicitly states that Sandor is attracted to Sansa.

- In one of the DVD commentaries, Martin describes the scene between the two of them when he takes her to Cersei as being "beautiful".

- In another DVD commentary, it is also stated that SanSan is in this season but that it will just "play out a bit differently". I think this different is where much of our frustration comes from.

- Martin wrote the Blackwater bay sequence. He has confirmed that the SanSan scene is included. We also know that Sophie has said that singing a song has been the hardest thing she has had to do this season.

So, based upon all of the above something will happen. The question will be whether or not it is enough to make us all happy.

talked about this a bit in another thread, here is what i said already:

this is becoming one of the most disappointing aspects of the show for me, this Hound is definitely not The Hound of the book...who is supposed to be abrasive, obnoxious, and extremely TALKATIVE! so much to the point you wish he'd shut the hell up after a while, lol

and their failing with The Hound can't be attributed to budget limitations and time restraints and whatever other excuses they throw out there, just lazy writing, give him a few of those great brash lines from the book to at least inflate his character a bit! and the actor should at least 'try' to act the part, it's not that difficult to act like a loudmouthed A-hole, ya know?

Yep!!

I did think it was nice that Tyrion acknowledged Sansa in that way. I think it could help non-book readers understand Sansa's strengths a bit better. However, in the books it was Sandor who saw her courtesy as armor. He mocked her for it but he was the one that saw the strength. Tyrion dismissed her as being rather empty headed. For me, this was just another example of them making Tyrion the super aweso hero of the series at the expense of others.

:agree: tyrion was certainly not admiring sansa's ability to lie despite everything to stay alive. one of the reasons he wants to keep her as far away from joff's wrath as possible is so the starks don't harm jaime. when they are back at the red keep after the riot, he thinks 1st of jaime, and wants to have sansa back with them mainly so his brother won't be killed in revenge. if they had shown sandor escorting sansa to the throne room and saying, "They trained you well, little bird," after she claims Robb is a traitor, then people who haven't read the books would see that he gets what she is trying to do..

and about your latest post, yes i had forgotten some of those points! i asked bryan cogman last week over at winteriscoming about how diffrently San/san would be portrayed this season, & he replied that it will indeed be explored. it's just that at times frustration wins :)

and hk47, you're right, Rory did an amazing job in his audition, so if they hired him cause of it, why did they cut not only that partiular scene but most of his character so far..?

I'm desperately hoping we are going to start seeing his character after this last episode.

Would you happen to have a link to that discussion over at winteriscoming? I'd love to read more. I'm heading over there now to look.

San/San needs to start, and the Hound needs more screen time. He's an important character when you consider his brutality mixed with his desire to protect Sansa, his fear of fire, and his hatred for his brother. We aren't going to get a good payoff with the Blackwater and him getting burned if they don't get started with the Hound storyline.

yeah, here it is: http://winteriscoming.net/2012/04/thrones-writer-bryan-cogman-interviewed-live/

but since there are many comments this is what he replied about it:

"Hiya. Thanks for your question. I just meant that it plays out a bit differently since LF gave the info instead of Hound… but that the relationship is still explored."

I liked that interview with Bryan Cogman , he is very knowledgeable of books.

I don't know what's going on this season, but , without any evidence, I get the impression that George is not as closely consulted as last year, that D&D are very burdened with basic production work and that producers, story editors, and teleplay writers have not spent enough time thinking things through.

Don't get me wrong, there is no show on TV I would rather watch, and I have been and remain immensely entertained... but I don't see the same organizational magic it saw last year (except for production design which just remains amazing.)

I feel better with the conformation, but I'm still impatient. :P I just love their dynamic and Rory Mccan is fantastic as the Hound, I always want to see more him. I'm sooo happy that Blackwater scene will be in this season. That was one of the scenes in ACoK, that I really wanted to see play out in season 2.

I guess just a general comment about the Hound, he's probably my favorite character in the books...is anyone else disapointed on how little they are using him?

In a word - YES!

The one that really got me upset was last week in episode 3 when they showed Sansa in her room. I thought "Oh good. She is going to get the note to go to the Godswood and hopefully she'll run into Sandor on the way back too." Then there's a knock on the door, Sansa opens it, and ... it's Shae. Shae!? Are you effing kidding me? Another precious few minutes therein wasted.

It's quite possible. I've noticed that the show this season has focused on character/scenes that have more of an action focus which is why I think the two of them have been waylaid so far. It is also my belief that him see/overhearing Joff with the prostitute will be what stirs Sandor to take a more active role with Sansa. So, he will be strictly a protector for her. My frustration is that this will eliminiate much of the dynamics between the two of them.

Yeah, I thought that might be a possibility as well. I do agree and understand how that Sandor just being a 'protector' for her would frustate you, because it frustrates me! :( *sigh*

i agree. i think this season is surpassing the last one if some things, but the story itself isn't as closley based as we saw before. this is also my favorite show and HBO is the most acurate thing we can get to see adapted from ASOIAFM but it justs seems as if they are caring only about big battles and evil vs.good main guys. i guess i mean like what they're doing with cersei/joff and robb/cat. they probably think it's more "popular" to have robb with a bigger role and joff as the meanest of lannisters whitewashing his mother in a way.

and so i get the feeling that they prefer to show ross and her "talent" rather than sansa and sandor.

@Chelly, agree i can't wait to see the blackwater scene either. for me it's my favorite part in the whole series :)

He's just another swordsman in the show. He has no personality at all. He barely speaks. We know nothing of his philosophy on knights and admiration for dogs. He's never called Sansa "little bird" either. Building his character now will seem a bit awkward but they will have to if they mean to have him travel with Arya in the future.

I wouln't go that far. But the fact that one of the producers would go into their relationship at length, state flat out that he is attracted to Sansa, and then give several reasons why is significant - regardless of other men's feelings towards her.

If it's completely removed it would be a bit backwards to build the character up during the Arya bit tho. The reason that part of ASOS was interesting was due to us already knowing some of the Hound's personality, and now got to see it through Arya's eyes instead of Sansa's.

Besides, I think everyone will mourn if the epic fight with Arya and Sandor vs the Tickler and Polliver at the Inn is be gone.

It would suck for that to be taken out but unless they start adding some additional characters next episode it seems like at least one of them will go. They can waste one on the nameless guy holding the torch during the torture scene. but who else can she name.

I hope they do build on the Hounds character, we havent really seen enough of him so far but its the same with a few other characters. Im afraid we get too many pointless sex scenes that either arent in the book or could be dropped from the show to make way for important scenes. The Renly/Loras, Renly/Margery scenes werent really that necessary.

I agree, Id like to see more of the Hound as he should have a bigger part to play later on, Im partiularly looking forward to his scenes with Arya.

Were they so pressed for time that they couldn't let Rory rasp "enough"? That one word added so much more to the dynamics of that scene.

It really makes no sense that they cut that out, especially since at one point they pan to Sandor's reaction while Sansa is getting beaten. He just has a slight grimaced look on his face. It would have taken one second to include this line, and it would have made a huge difference.
