Update from George: The Dothraki

On Martin's "not a blog", he recently wrote a long post about the many things he's working on. Notably, he mentions his work on WoW.

"WINDS OF WINTER. Yes, I'm working on that too. At the moment, I am writing about the Dothraki. More than that, I sayeth not, you know I don't like to talk about this stuff."- George RR Martin, on "not a blog".

Thoughts? He's probabaly writing about Dany. What do think is going to happen with Khal Jhaquo? What is Mago (who, according to GRRM, has an important role) going to do? Will they have a part in the Battle of Meereen?

Discuss!

I think they'll definitely have a part to play in the battle for Meereen. There are a number of things this could tell us, but it's too vague. Assuming the Dothraki don't all die immediately in the next book, he could be just about anywhere in the book.

I think Mago might kill Jhaquo in order to take over the khalasar after e decides to follow Dany, or perhaps dany will roast Jhaquo, and Mago will bend the knee, and the rest f them will follow her into Meereen. Hopefully that happens in the first o second Daenerys chapter.

Dany would kill Mago even if he bend the knee. She have sworn to kill him.

Jhaqo, however, could still save his ass by bending the knee.

"I promise you that, by the old gods and the new, by the lamb god and the horse god and every god that lives. I swear by the Mother of Mountains and the Womb of the World. Before I am done with them, Mago and Ko Jhaqo will plead for the mercy they showed Eroeh"

Oups, thanks for the correction.

Well, it appears that they will both roast. And slowly.

So it seems. Well, shell keep de khallasaar none the less, get back to meereen before the half point of the book, and hopefull on her way to westeros by the end. The rest of the book Stark children and Jamie. (I include povs like Davos in there since they will be meeting in some cases, in Mereen we will have Tiryon, Barristam and Vic)

dany will definitely unite all the khalasars into one and head back to meereen and destroy her enemies, the dothraki follow only the strong, what do you think they'll think when they come upon dany and her great black dragon feasting on charred animal flesh in the middle of the dothraki sea? more than likely they'll get behind her and help her save the day,

check out my "winds of winter predictions" post to add your thoughts on what will happen in the next book

I really don't know what to think about these Dothraki. Something tells me that Dany is going to have a problem with them, as she's had problems with pretty much everything else.

Who says they can't change their ways?

Isn't that what Dany really *ought* to be concerned with anyway, if she truly wants to eliminate slavery? Because even if she managed to free all slaves everywhere during her lifetime, as soon as she died, the slavers would be right back at it again.

If any true lasting change in that regard were to occur, it would have to be through the people /cultures of Essos actually changing their views or at least learning to accept it.

I like the idea of roasting Khal Jhaquo, then Mago bending the knee. I can't remember who said it in the books but someone said something along the lines of a good ruler needing to learn to be merciful and forgiving. Maybe her accepting Mago's submission will help her mature as a leader. Then she and Mago go to Meereen to help Barristan kick some ass.

But it would be cooler if she roasted both. And the rest of the khalasar followed her since the Dothraki only follow strength, as Jorah said. Then she goes and helps Barristan kick some ass.

Very true, and changing cultures takes generations. Slavery was abolished in the US 150 years ago, but many of the racial tensions and issues still exist.

Wasn't there a problem with someone being killed in the TV series (one of the future Khal's, I think Mago?) and GRRM mentioning that he will be an annoyance to Dany at some point. Would make sense if she roasts Jhaqo and keeps Mago around for a while

Why keep Mago? He was the one that did the horrible deed. She hates him more, I'd think. And he has less authority.

And I doubt the khal wants to kill Dany. He wants to take her to the old crones where khalessi are supposed to go when their khal dies. Killing her could be bad luck under Dothraki law.

If Dany lets the khal live or for some reason accepts his escort, then Mago can be her antagonist - the khal's second in command who dislikes her.

Also, Dany has shown the khal that she can ride a dragon. That makes her very useful to him, since no one else alive can. Killing her would be poor tactical move.

I'd think the Mereen battle will be over long before Dany returns since it's underway when she and the khal meet. Selmy and Victarion will determine its outcome and set the stage for her return.

Hmmm....you talking about the 1st season? The dude that Jorah killed when he tried to get in Drogo's tent? I know that dude was one of his bloodriders but I didn't think that was Jhaqo. Even if it was Jhaqo who died, the show could just use a different Khal (Pono) for the leader of the khalasar that she sees at the end of ADWD.

Or in the 2nd season? When Dany sent out her bloodriders when they were in the Red Waste? That was Rakharo who died (only his head returned) and that was courtesy of some Khal, can't remember which one. Maybe Pono?

How will the Dothraki change? They will just rape, plunder and murder but no longer take captives they can gift to the slavers? I guess it is better than nothing but still...

I didn't say that I think they *are* definitely going to change. An entire culture changing their ways suddenly like that seems unrealistic and does not seem like GRRM's style.

That said, I do find it strange that Dany would not at least *attempt* to influence them in some way in this regard -- from the very beginning she has been very anti-slavery, not just in Mereen and other slaver cities but against the capture and selling of slaves by the Dothraki themselves.

I think slavery/anti-slavery is a big theme in the series.....especially when considering the part is has played in history..... Hardhome, the Doom of Valyria, the FM connection, etc.
