Names: My newspaper column -- last three links restored

"Freelove" already had the sexual connotation in the 19th century because of its use in that way by the Oneida colony and other radicals of the day. So it had already become an embarrassing name within the lifetime of most women who had it. It is very unlikely, however, that more than a small handful of the parents who named their daughters Freelove knew of the sexual connotation when they chose it.

Ormond out of curiosity how do you find the meaning of a name if it's not a common name online? I ask because in the cemetery where I take a daily walk there are two tombstones that have the name Alzada, but I can't find anything on the name. Both Alzada's are from the late 1800's early 1900's and neither have the same last name, nor are they buried in the same part of the cemetery. I can't find any history of the name, and I'd like too as I think it sounds interesting. How does one become a name detective?

Actually genealogists often use unusual first names as clues to possible family relationships, so the first question here is are the birth dates given on the tombstones such that these two people could be parent/child?

I use a lot of the same references genealogists use in tracking down the history of an unusual name -- census records available from ancestry.com being one of my main sources.
