[TWOW Spoilers] Miscon reading : two Winds of Winter chapters

Recommended Posts

Like Melisandre, Quaithe is also a shadowbinder, but unlike Mel, Quaithe is not also a red priestess — as far as I know.

I haven't seen any evidence that Melisandre is a shadowbinder, but you are right by saying that Quaithe is not a red priestess.

Thanks. When I saw the post above I wanted to ask the same thing. I knew she was supposedly from Asshai, but I didn't think she was a RP.

From the wiki:

Quaithe, also known as Quaithe of the Shadow, is a priestess of Asshai.

Pretty sure the Shadowbinder is just another term for red-priest in the land of Asshai. Rh'llor is the God of Flame and Shadow. I don't think you can be a shadowbinder unless you're part of his religion.

It was my mistake for including Quaithe as a red-priestess. She belongs to a different religion. She's a priestess of Asshai.

What's with the Mel hating? I wish there were an "don't like" button.

I think Mel is still "human" just as the other Red Priests in the series. That she is always warm to the touch, indicates that something has happended to her that enables her to live without food and be able to see visions in fire. She doesn't need food, because she receives sustanence from R'hllor. It seems like each of the Red Priests have different abilities, for example Thoros of Myr can raise the dead, while Quaithe of the Shadow provides cryptic future telling.

Yes, she receives sustenance from R'hllor. That does not prove anything one way or another. That statement may apply to Beric Dondarrion and Catelyn Stark as well who are/were both undead. Who are undead because of power attributed to R'hllor.

I don't think the fact that she is always warm shows that something happened to her that enables her to see visions in the fire. That seems to be an ability that comes with practice. Thoros of Myr consults the flames, Stannis does. Others do as well, not all of them Red Priests.

She may still be "human" but she is not "normal". If she were normal by any standard in Westeros she would not take care to hide the differences from her surroundings.

She reminds herself to eat so that people don't notice she doesn't starve otherwise. So she eats food she doesn't need at a time when starvation is threatening the people around her. Food that might keep other people from starving. That is thoughtless at best. I don't hate her. I don't like her, either.

@Solstice: Well, strictly speaking, there is no outright or definite confirmation that the shadowbabies are a form of shadowbinding (if I’m not entirely mistaken). It’s just very, very probable.

.....what?

You are automatically assuming that "shadow binder" and creating "shadow babies" are one of the same? I don't see the connection. Do you have any words from the books that connect the two? I haven't read anything in the books what shadow binding could be. It sounds like this could be an ability to "bind" a shadow, as if Qaithe could catch or bind a shadow. Melisandre creates "shadows" after having sex with whom she makes the baby from. Doesn't sound like the same ability to me.

The Others can consult the flames?!?!? :o Whoa! They're more dangerous than I thought!

The first word in a sentence is typically capitalized.

I think its more than likely that shadow binding refers to binding another human beings shadow through sex. Your right its not a stated fact, however given that Mel is introduced as a shadow binder and then we see her produce a shadow and use that shadow to kill... How can you say there is no connection at all there?

It’s not a question of patience. To transcribe a live reading, you’d have to be able to write shorthand. Apparently, there was no one who did at any of the readings.

The Victarion chapter was transcribed from a video recording of the reading. No recordings of the other readings exist (as far as I know).

Im pretty sure GRRM also doesn't want people to do this. For the video interview where he read the first part of Vic 1, it's somewhat inevitable that someone somewhere will write it down. But at live readings I think he always asks people not to record/transcribe. Summary notes are acceptable though.

GRRM also read out an Arianne Martell POV chapter, which describes her being sent to Griffin's Roost by her father, who has had a raven from Jon Connington describing Aegon Targaryen's return to Westeros. She arrives at Griffin's Roost and meets Jon Connington, who informs her that the Golden Company and Aegon left for Storm's End a few days ago, and CAPTURED it with minimal losses. Arianne is intrigued by this returned prince, who took one of the most impregnable fortresses of Westeros with "minimal losses." She and her escort begin journeying to meet Aegon.

I was wrong. Melisandre is a shadowbinder according to A Clash of Kings, soft cover, page 20.

it doesnt nessessarily SAY she was yet hanging. It says - The hound snatched the end of the ope from the man holding it. "Let's see if she can dance" he said and gave it a yank. Brienne felt the hemp constricting, digging into her skin...........................

(bunch of stuff about the other two) then

Brienne sucked the air in desperately (doesnt say she couldnt get any. says she sucked it in...though desperately)

So. She is not undead. Also. It would be very boring if she and Jaime walk off into the unknown and plop he's dead. What about the love thing going on with them? And I REALLY REALLY REALLLY REALLY think Jaime is the volanquar (ok so I didnt look up the spelling on that one.) Azai ahai (nope, didnt spell that one either) is Dany

I'm not sure what your responding to with this but grrm has confirmed that Brienne said sword to save Prodricks life and that both of them survived, no word on Hyle Hunt.

I know that someone had already mentioned some of this theory earlier in the string, but it didn't get discussed much... and I am a big believer.

I think that Jaimie and Brienne's story lines are on track with the light bringer prophecy. I cant think of any other situation in ASOIAF where the story of Nissa Nissa would be recreated. Either Brienne will use Oathkeeper to kill Jaimie or vice versa. Though I think it more likely that Brienne will do the killing, seeing that she is so in love with Jaimie. I can't articulate the full recreation of events because I believe some of the key details are intentionally being withheld by GRRM. Based on some of George's comments (or choosing not to comment on questions) about Brienne's connection to the Dunk and Egg stories, I think that Brienne has a big part to play in the future of westeros.

Someone needs to plunge a sword through their deepest love to recreate Lightbringer, right? Are there any other likely options other than Brienne and Jaimie? Also, Jaimie had the heart tree dream about holding a sword of flame. Oathkeeper is part of the old Stark blade Ice, which many believe to be a likely contender for Lightbringer. Then add into the mix that Gendry is in the relative neighborhood and has been given the skills by Tobho Mott to reforge a valerian blade.

Like I said, I can't quite articulate my ideas, but I feel like I am on to something. Are any other of you seriously considering a similar theory? Or should I hack this up as crackpot?
