Wilbur Posted September 13, 2021 Share Posted September 13, 2021 Iron Maiden have always written songs that are allegory-, allusion- and metaphor-laden, covering topics from history ranging from Alexander the Great to the Crimean War, from philosophy on topics like Existentialism and Hegelian though, and also in comparative religion. Now they have turned to using distinct animation styles in the music videos for the songs on their most recent album release. Given the mixtures of allegories, allusions and metaphors they like to use, and how their album covers have always been a treasure-hunt for such items, this is an obvious and long-overdue choice. Bruce Dickinson’s voice is not what it used to be after his bout with throat cancer, and he is singing in a lower register than in their heights of the 70s and 8-s, but their lyric and guitar work is still top notch. In general, it is astonishing to see a band still disciplined to turn out top music on a regular and systematic basis for 40-plus years, and also willing to embrace new techniques. I've watched a bit of patrickisanavajo, before RevDogs came out, when I was getting tired of the same perspective in the old classic Westerns (though who ever gets tired of a good Western?), and wanted to know what indigenous Americans enjoyed in a Western - if they ever do. Turns out most are positive about Last of the Mohicans, Dances with Wolves, Thunderheart, and the like. Even though the leads are white, as long as the representation of indigenous peoples is balanced and fair and uses indigenous actors, then the movie can be enjoyed for what it is - a good watch. There's an unusual fondness for Willow I've found. I've not heard anything about the older Westerns from the Ford/John Wayne era though. Anyway, that was a good clip. Dallas Goldtooth, who plays Spirit in Reservation Dogs, is part of a sketch comedy group the 1491s, "a gaggle of Indians chock full of cynicism and splashed with a good dose of indigenous satire. They coined the term All My Relations, and are still waiting on the royalties. They were at Custer's Last Stand. They mooned Chris Columbus when he landed. They invented bubble gum. the 1491s teach young women to be strong. And teach young men how to seduce these strong women."
