Mulled Wino
I know you normally dont fight with a longsword but why in seven hells didnt you pick one up and kill Trant with one?
Kittyhat
For once I actually agree with you. It was pretty bloody stupid that he never picked up one of the real swords lying around, readily at hand.
Lady Sansa Stark
He would have to bow and pick up the sword. In that one moment, Trant could kill him. Or Arya, for that matter. He didn't have the time I guess. otherwise he'd done it of course. I don't think he answered 'yes' to the God of Death that day.

Liar
For the first sword of Braavos, bending over and picking up a sword before he gets slashed doesn't seem like a very dangerous move to me.
Errant Bard
On the other hand, he does tell us that he's not the first sword anymore, and even in his prime, others were stronger, faster, or more skilled. Observation skills alone cannot pick up swords.
snowboard_season_is_coming
He would have to bow and pick up the sword.I was asking myself the same question and coming to the same conclusion. In the movie he would have had the time though. He also would have had the time to do a further stab at the lying men to ensure they stay down.

But, Trant was covered in armor where Syrio was "naked", even not being the fastest, strongest, etc, he was strong, fast and skilled.I'm not saying he did it, I'm saying he could have, just as easily. KingHodor
It would be cooler to win with just a wooden sword.Jokes aside, I don't think Syrio can fight with the traditional Westerosi longsword because of its heaviness.
valyrian_steel
So is he stupid and dead or did just get captured, end up in the dark cells and come out as Jaken Hagar?

There was space and time to do something like throw his wooden sword at Trant as a distraction and then dive for one of the dropped swords. It's not as if Trant is the Flash. Chaircat Meow
Yeah, its pretty weird. Trant was wearing full plate though, no? If so Syrio probably still didn't stand much of a chance, even with a proper sword. Although to be fair GrrM likes his fights of the nimble against the heavily armoured, (Bronn-Vardis, Greogr-Viper) so this doesn't really hold either. The Sleeper
The same Jaqen that was out of the cells before Ned failed his coup? Not that it makes much difference, but as Ned was named regent by the previous king, it was Cersei's successful coup.

Hagar also knew who Arya was.
