Bayard
Well, Mance lost the battle at the Wall. Yes, Stannis had knights, but they were only 1500 + maybe 150-200 brothers of the NW. Mance had probably over 10.000 fighters, maybe more. There is no excuse for losing, he knew he was going to fight organised armies in the South, he had the time to prepare but he was completely crushed. The fact that he had different tribes to organize says nothing, he knew that from the beginning. Hannibal for example had an army which not only was made from completely different troops, but they all spoke another language. Anyway, Mance is very cool in many ways, but he is not a great military commander.

Of the few thousand fighters that Mance did have, only the Thenns had any form of armor, the rest were all wearing furs or boiled leather and carrying rusted swords, stone axes of sharpened sticks. From the 3000 Tormund had, at least 500 were fighters, just to have an estimate!!
Chaircat Meow
I thought Mance had about 20,000 people at the Wall, all told, of which about 6,000 would have been warriors (going on the idea that warriors = just under one third of the populace based on Tormund's band). He did also have giants and mammoths. So Stannis achieved something routing all of that via a surprise attack, although the wildlings were poorly armed of course.
