Hand of the King to his nephew Aerys I his other nephew Maekar I threw him in the blackcells when he ascended the throne. Maekar's son Aegon I sent him north to the wall when his brother Aemon took the black. In AFfC Aemon even said Rivers was selected Lord Comander at one poit.He features heavily in the Dunk and Egg short stories. If you haven't read them I suggest you give them a read they're worth it.
