Mods: Alek, Mexal, Plessiez.

It's not day 1 yet! Please don't post until the mods announce the game has begun. We are currently waiting for people to confirm (privately) that they have received and understood their role PMs.

It's day 6 ... and the game is over. Thanks for playing (if you did). Sorry that you didn't win?

3/11 players were alive when day began:

Please note that the "standard" rules have been rewritten in several places. See the next post. We encourage you to carefully read them. Since nobody is going to actually read them, this is a quick summary of the more important changes:

(1) This game uses (opt-out) hard alt rules. See the rules or the discussion here for more details. If you want the true identity of your alt to be made public, PM the mods. The mods will reveal your alt at the start of the next game day. Until your alt is revealed, you must not drop any deliberate hints or references to your true identity. You must not speculate on the game thread about the identity of any player whose identity has not been mod-revealed. In most cases, the identity behind an alt will not be automatically revealed on death.

(2) Failing to post for 24 hours will not always lead to an automatic mod-kill. Rather, a player who fails to post for 24 hours during a day phase will merely lose their vote for the rest of the day (note that this is similar, but not exactly the same as, the inactivity rules used for Mafia 96). The vote requirements will be adjusted accordingly. However, a player who has lost their vote for this reason can still post and should try to do so. If they do, they will be able to vote as normal during the next day phase (if they are alive, of course...). During the night, anybody who has not posted for 24 hours will be automatically modkilled as usual. See the rules or the discussion here for more details.

(3) Any night action sent in before night falls can be changed at any time before the mods post the end of day scene. Once this scene is posted, the most recent action the mod has received is definite and cannot be changed. There are no longer any "provisional" PMs as such.

(4) Nights will last for a fixed length (six hours), regardless of how quickly any actions are sent in.

(5) After everyone has signed up and the roles have been sent out, you will be asked to confirm your role and factional alignment by PM before the game begins. If you want your alt identity revealed from day 1 onwards, or if you suddenly realise your role stinks you will be too busy to play and would like to be replaced, consider this the time to ask.

Rules

All players must ..

A1) ... have an account on the

mafia discussion board, with the same account name as on the main board.

A2) ... log in and view the game thread and the discussion board anonymously at all times, unless they have informed the mods that this is not possible for technical reasons. (If you see that somebody playing isn't viewing the thread anonymously, don't post this information on the thread, because that would be silly. Similarly, please refrain from commenting on the number of people viewing the thread anonymously.)

A3) ... post at least once every 24 hours. Failure to do so may lead to a player being modkilled, unless they have previously arranged an extension with the mods. Please contact the mods as early as possible if you wish to request an extension. See Inactivity and Extensions, below, for more on how activity will be enforced in this game.

A4) ... send in role prescribed night actions (including the desire to take no action) within the time limit. (The mods encourage players to send in night actions before night falls, if this is practical and won't unduly influence your choice of action).

A5) ... treat everybody involved in the game with courtesy and respect. Personal attacks on other players will not be tolerated.

A6) ... make any edits the mods request of them as soon as possible (whether or not they believe that the posts need to be edited).

A7) ... contact the game mods as soon as possible if you feel you are at risk of breaking a rule or fear they or another person may have already done so. (Please do not post about possible rule violations on the thread itself.)

Players must not ...

B1) ... deliberately behave in a way intended to reduce the chance of their faction achieving its win conditions, except when this is a necessary result of following some other rule.

B2) ... discuss the game with any other living players outside this game thread except when told they may do so in their role PMs. If you aren't sure if somebody is playing or not, don't risk it.

B3) ... reveal any information about the game at all in any other thread than this one, or in any other forum (including message boards and chat rooms) where it may be seen by a living player.

B4) ... give anybody but the mods access to any of their accounts (including game alts), either here or on the mafia discussion board, or post on the game thread or the discussion board using multiple accounts.

B5) ... attempt to obtain advice or information about the game from anybody not currently playing or by accessing the any hidden forums on the mafia board to which the mods have not given them access..

B6) ... post information on the thread relating to another player's past or current activity on (or absence from) the board that would not otherwise be available to anybody reading the thread later.

B7) ... discuss the precise timings of any PMs sent to or received from the mods. In fact in general we would prefer you not to talk about PMs sent to the mods at all.

B8) ... quote or allude to flavor-text from their role PMs that, in the judgement of the mods, could be used to persuade people that they are telling the truth about a role they are claiming or may claim later on.

B9) ... post on the thread at any time after they are dead until the mods themselves post on the thread to announce that the game is over. Any posts made (accidentally or otherwise) after death should be immediately edited blank.

B9) ... make any bets about the game, or attempt to influence the game through previously arranged pacts, wagers, promises or alliances. Try not carry grudges from one game to another even grudges against the people who are really annoying.

B10) ... make any posts to the game thread with any account other than their given game alt, before the game is over. Any posts made "out-of-alt" should be edited blank as soon as possible.

B11) ... offer to break any of these rules or any other rules the mods have set in place for the game, encourage others to do so or help to conceal the fact that rules have been broken. Both the players and the mod have a duty to enforce the rules of the game.

Alts and Alt Rules

This game will be played using thematic 'game alts'.

C1) Players must not post on the game thread with any account other than their game alt. Any posts accidentally made "out of alt" should be edited blank as soon as possible.

C2) Players must not give anybody but the game mods access to their game alt for any reason. Players must not change their password from the one assigned to them by the game mods, unless instructed to do so by the mods.

One purpose of the game alts is to enable players to attempt to disguise their identity. If you wish to have your true identity revealed to the game thread, please PM the mods to request this. Your identity will be revealed by the mods at the start of the following game day, provided that you were still alive when night fell. However, in all other cases your alt will not be revealed after your death (in particular, note that even if you have sent in a request that your alt be revealed, your alt will not be revealed after you are lynched!).

Until your alt is revealed by the mods, you may not:

C3) Reveal any information at all about your true identity or your past mafia experience. This includes how many games you have played and whether or not you have had certain roles.

C4) Ask other players if they believe they have correctly identified or 'alt-guessed' you.

C5) Announce whether or not you intend to reveal your alt at a future point.

You should treat other players who have yet to reveal their alts as if they were new players you had never encountered before.

C5) Do not ask anybody playing if they have "alt-guessed" another player, or attempt to hint at any other players' identity or level of experience. Frankly, we'd rather you didn't try to alt-guess people at all -- do not send in alt-guesses, as they will not be posted. Do not ask other people to reveal their alts.

C6) Do not announce or suggest that your reaction to any unrevealed player in the game has been determined by any sort of alt-guess (or by a player's decision not to reveal their alt). Words like "meta" and "squirrels" are liable to get you mod-killed. Don't tempt us.

Inactivity: Replacements and Modkills

"Modkilling for inactivity" works differently in this game than in past games. See also this explanation on Soph's board.

D1) Everybody who has signed up to play is asked to confirm their role (via PM) before the game begins. Please reply to the role PM the mod has sent you stating your role name and the name of the faction you belong to. If you fail to do so within 24 hours, then you may be replaced to allow the game to begin at a reasonable time.

D2) If you wish to be replaced at any time between receiving your role information and the end of day 1, please contact the mods and we will attempt to find a replacement. As long as a suitable replacement is available, you will be replaced. Other than this, you will never be replaced because of inactivity (though the mods reserve the right to replace people for other rule infractions).

Once the game begins, everyone is expected to be reasonably active and involved in the game. As rule (A2) says, you are expected, as a minimum, to post at least once every 24 hours. A player who fails to post for a 24 hour period and has not arranged an extension (see below) is said to have become "inactive".

D3) If a player becomes inactive during a night phase, or is inactive when night falls, they will be modkilled. The mods will change their password so that they can no longer post in the game (as well as sending them a PM to explain what has happened). They will take no special action at night, even if they had already sent in a night action. For all other purposes they are still alive until the mods post the morning scene. They will be reported dead in this morning scene, and nothing can prevent this death.

D4) A player who becomes inactive during a day phase will not be killed, but will instead lose the ability to vote for the rest of the day. The mods will announce this as soon as possible, but technically their vote is lost as soon as they become inactive. Any vote they have cast that day will be ignored.

D5) A player who cannot vote can still be voted for. The voting requirements will be adjusted to reflect the current number of players with the ability to vote. All other votes will remain outstanding: if the change in voting requirement means a lynch is now secured, this will automatically end the day.

D6) Players who have had their votes removed can still post in the game thread and are encouraged to do so. As soon as they post they cease being "inactive" and, in particular, will not automatically die when night falls. However, they do not regain their vote for the rest of the day.

D7) A player who lost their vote for inactivity on a previous day will, if alive the next day, regain their vote and face no further automatic sanction. However, the mods may take action against any player or players who repeatedly become inactive during the day phase.

If you know that real-life commitments will make it difficult or impossible to post in the game for a period of time (longer than 24 hours but shorter than the expected length of the game), please contact the mods to request an extension. The mods reserve the right not to grant an extension, but will only refuse to do so in exceptional circumstances.

D8) An extension is only valid once the mods post to announce it in the game thread. If the mods forget to announce an extension, or you fail to give enough warning, all the usual penalties will apply.

D9) The mods will announce extensions in the form "player X has an extension and will not be expected to post between [this time] and [that time]". The extension lasts from the first time given until the second or until you next post, whichever is sooner. After the extension ends, you have as much time remaining before becoming inactive as you had when the period of the extension began.

Spoilers and Spectator Threads

As well as running the game on this thread, the mods are also responsible for administering the spectator threads on the discussion board. Anybody not actively involved in the game (whether spectators or dead players) can request access to this thread by PMing the mods. Please note that while in general the mods will be happy to let anybody have access to this thread, they do reserve the right to refuse access to anybody for any reason. Accordingly, please do not ask anybody other than the mods for access to the spoiler thread or give yourself access to it, even if you have the power to do so.

Once given access to the spectator forums, spectators should also take note of the following rules, and must not ...

D1) ... share any information from the spoiler thread with living players, or post such in a forum where it may be seen by living players.

D2) ... offer any advice, hints or strategy to living players.

D3) ... make personal attacks on players in the game or on posters in the spoiler thread itself.

D4) ... post on the game thread before the mods announce that the game is over.

Spectators (of any sort) who ignore these rules are likely to have their access to the spectator threads revoked.

Finally,,,

Thanks for reading all these rules (or at least skimming this far down). Please contact us as soon as possible if you feel we've made a mistake or oversight. Please also note the following:

F1) Failure to comply with the rules may result in any punishment the mods deem appropriate, including, but not limited to: a request to edit posts; formal warnings on thread; "modkilling", and ending the game prematurely in favor of one faction or none. The mods will also report rule infractions to the metamods after the game. Except where clearly stated in the rules, the mods are free to respond to any rules violation in whatever manner they wish. In all cases the mods' decision on these matters is final.

F2) Feel free to PM or IM your thoughts (or questions) about the game to the mods at any time. We love to hear them! However, in this game, please do not send in alt-guesses!.

F3) The mods reserve the right to amend the rules during the game if we realize we've forgotten to cover something. Or indeed, for any other reason that seems like a good idea at the time.

Game Mechanics

1 - General Structure

The mods will announce that the game has begun shortly after everybody confirms their role and alignment via PM. Players may begin posting as soon as the mods announce that the game has started. The game begins during the day. The day ends when when a sufficient number of people have voted to lynch a player (remove that player from the game) or voted to end the day without a lynch. The mods will post maximum time limits for the length of a day on the game thread. If no consensus is reached when the time expires, the day ends with no lynch. When the day phase has ended, night begins. The mods will then post a scene reporting the outcome of the day. Players may continue posting in the thread but no voting is allowed. Night ends when the mods post the morning scene reporting the outcome of the night actions. Day and night phases continue to alternate until the game ends.

2 - Day Phase

During the day, all living players may post in the thread. Active players (players who have not gone for more than 24 hours without posting) may also cast a vote for one other player of their choice. Some roles may have special powers which can be used during the day.

2.1 - Voting Mechanics

To vote for a player: bold that player's name.

To vote to end the day without a lynch: bold the word night.

To change your vote: bold the other player's name (or bold night).

To remove your vote without casting a new vote: bold the phrase remove vote.

(Note that it is not necessary or customary to remove vote as part of changing your vote.)

2.2 - Voting Restrictions

You may only vote during the day phase. You may only vote if you are an active player. You can only have one vote outstanding at any time. You may not vote for yourself. You may not edit a vote into a post. You may not edit a vote out of a post. It is best if you do not edit any post with a vote in at all, in fact (if you do, it is left to to the mods' discretion how to interpret your vote...).

2.3 - Bold Restrictions

The use of bold should be limited to voting, except in some cases and for some specific roles. If you aren't sure if you're allowed to use bold, you aren't. If you want to emphasize a players name or another word, you can underline the word or post using a different color or font (but try to avoid using fonts that cannot be read on mobile devices).

2.4 - Majority Defined

A majority means either more than half of the active players voting for one player's lynch or half or more of the active players voting to go to night without a lynch. If there are 2N active players you need N+1 votes for a lynch and N to go to night without lynching. With 2N+1 active players you need N+1 votes for both outcomes.

2.5 - Ending the Day

The day ends as soon as a majority is reached (or, if the players fail to vote for any action, once the time limit for the day has elapsed). Anyone lynched is no longer alive and must not post in the thread. Votes can no longer be withdrawn and new votes cannot be cast until the night phase ends.

2.6 - Evening Scene

The mods will post a scene shortly after the day ends to report the results of the day actions. If the day ended with a player's lynch, the mods will also reveal information about that player's alignment (see 'Coroner Finder' in the summary post for details). Note that if the player opted not to reveal their alt while alive, their alt will not be automatically revealed after their death. See the alt rules for more details.

3 - Night Phase

During the night, players may post in the thread but may not vote. Some players will have the ability to perform special actions. In this game, there is no role list as such -- see the post below for some sample role PMs.

3.1 - Performing a Night Action

If your role includes the ability to perform a special action at night, you need to PM the mods to indicate the action you wish to take. Most, if not all, roles have the ability to "withhold" their powers (i.e. take no action). This will be made clear in the description of the role (but PM the mods for clarification if you don't understand). If you chose to not perform your allowed action, you must PM "no action" to the mods. You are encouraged to send in night action PMs as soon as possible, during the day phase before night falls. Night action PMs sent in before the night falls may be changed at any time before the mods post the evening scene.

3.2 - Contingent PM

If you send in a PM during the day phase, you may choose to list alternative actions contingent on the manner in which the day ended. These contingencies must also be entirely unambiguous and clear to anybody reading the game thread. If none of the contingencies you list actually occur, or the mods do not understand your instructions, your PM will be disregarded, and you must send a new PM to the mods.

3.3 - Provisional PM

There are no 'provisional' PMs in this game. Once night falls, all action PMs will be treated as final (except in the case that you send in a 'contingency PM' and the mods cannot unambiguously determine what action to take - in this case you will be assumed to have sent in no PM at all).

3.4 - Length of the Night

Nights will last for a minimum of six hours. All actions must be sent to the mods within this time limit. However, the night will only end when the mods announce that the next day has begun.

3.5 - Failure to PM

If not all PMs are received within the time limit, everyone who has failed to send in a PM will be considered to have taken no action. In addition, those who failed to send in a PM will be warned by the mods and may risk further penalties.

3.8 Preventing Night Actions

Except where expressly noted, no night actions prevent any other night actions sent in from taking effect. In particular, a player who attempts a night action on the same night they are killed will succeed in performing this action, unless they are prevented from doing so in some other way.

3.9 - Morning Scene

The night phase ends when the mods post the morning scene. The mods will post the scene as soon as they can do so following the expiration of the time limit. The scene will report any player deaths that occurred during the night. The mods will reveal information about their alignment (see 'Coroner Finder' in the summary post) and may also reveal information about their alt (see the special alt rules). Other than this information, there are no clues in the morning scenes. As soon as the scene is posted any players who are reported dead lose the right to post in the thread. The time limit for the new day will begin with the morning scene.

Section 4 - Endgame

The game will continue to alternate between day and night phases until the game ends. The game can end after either a day or night phase.

4.1 - Winning Conditions

The game ends once one faction has reached its winning conditions, which the mods will state in the game thread in a different post.

Mafia is a team game. Once one faction achieves its winning conditions, all members of that faction have won whether or not they are living players when the winning conditions are achieved.

4.2 - Ending Scene

The mods will post an ending scene and declare the game over shortly after one faction achieves its winning conditions. If for any reason it becomes impossible for either faction to achieve its winning conditions, the mods will declare the game a draw.

The game is only over when a mod posts the ending scene. Even if you know (or believe you know) the result of the game before then, you may not post in the thread unless you are alive.

4.3 - Calling the Game Early

The mods reserve the right to end the game at any time before a faction achieves its winning conditions provided there are compelling reasons to do so. In general, the mods will end the game early as soon as one faction's victory becomes inevitable.

4.4 - Spoilers

When the game is over, the mods will reveal the alts and roles of everybody who played and also give everyone access to the spectator threads on the discussion board.

Factions

Every player who signs up will be randomly assigned a role and a factional alignment. You win the game (whether dead or alive) if your faction meets its winning conditions, described below. The faction you belong to, and that faction's winning conditions, will never change during the game. There is no cult and there are no other 'conversion' abilities.

Mafia is a team game and you win if and only if your faction wins.

At the start of the game...

* a majority of players are aligned with the innocent faction.

* at least two players are aligned with the evil faction.

* some number of players (possibly zero) may belong to a third-party faction (or factions).

Winning Conditions

The game ends once a faction meets its winning conditions.

The innocent faction wins if there is at least one player alive and every living player is a member of the innocent faction.

The evil faction wins if there is at least one player alive and every living player is a member of the evil faction.

Any player that belongs to a different faction will have their factional winning conditions explained in their role PM. Please do not hesitate to ask the mods (by PM, of course) if you ever need your winning conditions clarified. As in past games, the mods will call the game early once it becomes inevitable that a particular faction will satisfy its winning conditions.

Note that at most one faction can win the game (it may be possible, however, that no faction wins). There are no shared victories.

Time Limits

The length of the game day has yet to be decided. Feel free to try to influence our decision by voting in this poll. Each game day will last for a maximum of 37 hours. You are free to end the day earlier than this if you want!

Each night will last for a fixed 6 hours. It may take the mods longer to post the new morning scene, but you will only be able to send in night actions for the first six hours after the previous day ends.

Coroner Finder

This game will be played using a 'Coroner Finder'. Whenever the mods report the death of a player, they will also reveal which faction that player belonged to. Additional information will not be revealed. The Coroner Finder is never wrong.

In particular, note that alts will not be automatically revealed on death. Should you ever wish your true identity to be made public, PM the mods. Do not discuss your plans to do so on the thread. At the start of each game day, the mods will reveal the identities of every player who requested this information be made public, provided that that player was not killed before the previous night began. Any alt reveals announced by the mod this way are guaranteed to be accurate.

We now have eleven players signed up. Thanks to you all.

We'd still like some replacements lined up, just in case, so please feel free to volunteer to be a replacement. Also feel free to PM Targ if you'd like to discuss the game on Soph's board with other unspoiled spectators, or if you'd like to follow the game spoiled with the mods.

Everybody who has signed up will soon be sent log-in details for a game alt. Log in to your game alt to find your role PM. Please confirm you have received your role PM by replying to the mods, stating your role name and your alignment. The game will begin soon after everybody has confirmed. Do not post in this thread until the mods post a big green "GO!" message below.

Every roleless innocent will be sent an exact copy of the PM below. There is at least one roleless innocent in the game.

Welcome to the game!

Role name: Roleless innocent

Alignment: Innocent

Powers? Psh. Who needs them? You're a simple sort of person, really. You know that nights are for sleeping, and that days are for voting. You may not have any secret special abilities (to be precise: you definitely don't) but you have your brains, your eyes, and your vote. What more do you need?

Abilities: None.

You win (whether alive or dead) if the innocent faction meets its winning conditions as described on the main thread.

The following innocent-aligned role does not appear in this game. However every innocent-aligned role PM will be structured in the same way as this sample PM.

Welcome to the game!

Role name: Gladiator (1-shot)

Alignment: Innocent

Lynch it with fire! You just know that Player X is scummy. Why can't everyone else see it? Maybe it's time you gave them an ultimatum: either they vote for Player X, or they vote for you. No other options need be considered.

Abilities: One night only during the game you may PM the mods with the name of a target player. If that player dies that night for any reason, then you will also die. If they are still alive at the start of the next day, the mods will announce that only they and you can be voted for that day. No other votes will be counted. Should the players fail to secure a lynch, you will both die at the end of the day. Otherwise, whichever of you is voted for will be lynched as usual, and the other will survive. This ability is unblockable.

You win (whether alive or dead) if the innocent faction meets its winning conditions as described in the main thread.

The following evil-aligned role does not appear in this game. However every evil-aligned role PM will be structured in the same way as this sample PM.

Welcome to the game!

Role name: Lynchproof (passive ability)

Alignment: Evil

You are a terrifying, evil killer. So terrifying, in fact, that the mods are kind of afraid of you. We're not sure we'd be brave enough to remove you from the game, even if a majority of players were foolish enough to risk voting for you... well, not right away, anyway.

Abilities: If a majority of the players vote to lynch you, the day will end but you will not die. Instead the mods will announce that the day has ended with no lynch and move the game into the next night-phase. You can act as normal during this night. However, you will die after this night as soon as a single player casts a (valid) vote for you. This will not end the day.

Factional Abilities: You are partnered with the rest of the evil faction and may communicate with them off-thread, in any fashion and at any time, as long as you are alive. You partner(s) in this game are _______________________________.

The evil faction may send in a factional night-kill every night. This is a collective, factional action and not considered to be performed by any particular player, unless only one of you is still alive. The decision to send in a factional night-kill does not prevent you from also performing a night action associated to your own personal role.

You win (whether alive or dead) if the evil faction meets its winning conditions as described on the main thread.

The following third-party role does not appear in this game. However, any third party role PM will be structured in the same way as this sample PM.

Welcome to the game!

Role name: Faceless Man

Alignment: Mercenary

You are a shape-shifting, identity-stealing Faceless Man! You have been hired to do a simple mission.... You must ensure that none of the other prisoners, whatever their alignment, can escape the ship.

Abilities: Each night, you may, if you choose, PM the mods the name of a currently living player. No matter what other actions are taken in the game, that player will not die that night. Before the next day begins, the player controlling the alt will be told that they have had their identity stolen (and will be unable to post in the game anymore). Your current alt will be reported dead in the morning scene, and you will be given control of the stolen alt. Since you are not really this alt, but have only stolen their form, no ongoing status effects from that player will be carried over to you.

Winning Condition: You win the game if there are no members of any other faction alive when the game ends.

Please do not reveal information about the formatting or the flavour text of your role PM (whether in an effort to persuade people about a role claim or for any other reason). Do not quote word for word from the 'abilities' section of your role PM. Do not pretend to do any of this, and do not encourage anybody else to do it. Expect the mods to be annoyed if you do.

Naturally you may claim the name of your role and accurately (or otherwise) describe how the role works. But don't quote straight from the role PM.

Any questions? Please PM the mods. Do not post in this thread until the mods post a big green "GO!" message below.. The game will begin on Monday.

Log-in information is going out now. Expect a PM on this board, unless you're the sort of person who doesn't ever empty out their inbox for some reason we can't send you a PM here. In that case, we'll try to send you log-information on Soph's board instead. In the meantime, to bump the thread, a scene.

Prologue

The prisoner called Blackfyre huddled in his cabin, too afraid – too terrified – to even think of sleep. He wondered, not for the first time, what gods he had angered to deserve this fate. Even the Justice at the trial had begun to see the sense in what he'd done to those minstrels, after all – it had been only proper, surely? Righteous, even – any sort of musician who ranked such mundane concerns as “popularity” or “being paid for performances” above artistic integrity and novel sonic experimentation could only deserve death. Except if that were true, why was Blackfyre here, trapped on this ship, surrounded by lunatics and killers, with no charts and no hope of rescue?

After the trial was over, he'd been dragged out with the common thieves and footpads, and thrown into the cells beneath King's Landing. Rotting in a flea-infested dungeon wasn't how he'd been planning to spend the rest of his life, but he'd resolved to make the best of it. Even the most humble of music critics must be prepared to make some sacrifices for the sake of art. Not that the surroundings really leant themselves to artistic introspection – black iron manacles on the walls, dank things growing in the corners, rats and other vermin scurrying underfoot – it was all so uninspiring. Too obvious and too derivative, he'd concluded, glumly; and not a patch on all the great hidden dungeons and oubliettes that the people who built this place obviously never heard of.

Months had passed like this. And then one day the message had come down from the King's Hand himself that the Night's Watch needed men. “Need absolutely anyone,” the head jailor had repeated, looking at Blackfyre in a manner that had seemed a little needlessly pointed. “You get all sorts of freaks and madmen up on the Wall.”

Come morning then, Blackfyre had found himself placed under armed escort and led out to the harbour with dozens of other prisoners. Like cattle, they'd been marched unceremoniously into the hold and left there, chained and ignored, as the ship dropped anchor and begun the long voyage north. Unaccustomed to sea voyages, Blackfyre had taken the opportunity to be noisily and violently sick. Even that didn't do much to break up the monotony, though. Sea travel is a dull affair, Blackfyre had deduced, enjoyed mainly by ill-educated labourers and with little to recommend it to those with more cultivated tastes.

It was on the ship that they'd all taken their new names – mocking homages to the lords and ladies for whose lives and futures they would soon be dedicating their own. “Nobody up North cares what you did in your old lives,” explained the Captain, scowling over them one morning, “and I reckon nobody cares what you called yourselves, neither.”

They never made it to the Wall, of course.

Howling storms, sweeping westwards from Braavos or Pentos (or one of those other Free Cities you've probably never heard of) caught the crew unawares – or perhaps they'd never truly intended to risk the dangerous passage to the Wall at all. Even if they had, the ship was clearly not capable of it – she'd been in poor shape before, and the storms had finished her – wins ripping the sails from the masts, great waves dragging men overboard as rising seawater swept into the hold, drowning the prisoners who were unable to scramble up the stairs to safety.

Somehow, Blackfyre, and a dozen other prisoners, had managed to survive. Creeping out of the hold, their eyes unused to the harsh light of the sun, they'd found no trace of the crew, no lifeboats or smaller craft on which to escape ... and found themselves with no sense of where they, or anything else at all, actually were.

Everyone seemed content to defer to the prisoner they'd nicknamed Targaryen, for some reason – perhaps it was the name alone that commanded respect, perhaps the fact he claimed to know some sort of mystic art that would enable them to navigate knowing only the position of the sun. Nobody, however, could agree where they should be trying to navigate too – and the arguments had soon grown heated. Eventually, Targaryen had taken matters into his own hands, and announced that – unless a majority of the surviving prisoners could agree on a different destination – he would be leading the ship back north, to the Wall and the Night's Watch.

“Some of you might feel differently”, he admitted, while the others stared at him sullenly, “but I think most of us, whatever our past crimes, can see the wisdom in helping to defend the realm from those terrible frozen creatures we've all heard the rumours about.”

And so they'd all decided to put aside their differences and, come morning, make common cause and head to t- … suddenly, Blackfyre thought he heard a strange noise, the sound of a door creaking open, perhaps, except that … his eyes flashed to his own door. Not possible, he thought to himself dumbly, seeing a cowled figure pushing open his door, accomplices at his back and a sharp knife in his hands, I locked that door, I'm sure of it! Yet locked or not, the door was open now, and the robed figures were already upon him, knives slashing downwards with murderous, lethal intent.

“Why?” he begged of his killers, falling to the floor under the weight of their repeated blows. As the strength sapped out of him, a chance flash of lightening flickered outside, illuminating – just for a instant – the faces of the murderers. You? thought Blackfyre, as the darkness washed over him, I never thought that-

House Blackfyre was killed on Night 0.

He was Zar Lannister and a member of the Allegedly-Too-Busy-To-Play-Or-To-Mod Faction.

Obviously there are no clues in the scenes.

Day 1 will begin once everybody has confirmed their role and alignment by PM. Please do not post until you have sent a confirmation PM and the moderators have posted the usual big green “GO” message, below.

Wasn't the game supposed to have started by now?

Well, yes. But everybody who signed up was also supposed to confirm they had received their role PMs. If you haven't confirmed your role yet, please do so as soon as possible. Thank you.

Game will start as soon as everybody has confirmed. Hopefully that means "very soon".

ETA: It did not . Once again, thanks to everyone who confirmed promptly. Very sorry for the delay.

Since at least this mod is going to bed now, I'm afraid the start of the game could easily be delayed by another six hours at least. Our thanks for your continuing patience.

This is the day 1 starting scene!

The Captain

Elsewhere in the wide expanse of the uncharted oceans, a small raft drifted along in the current.

Soaked by rain and seawater spray, the surviving crew huddled miserably around their dwindling supplies of provisions. The only man who felt like talking was the Captain. As ever, he was in a furious temper.

"...see, these new prisoners have no stamina," he continued, waving his arms about to emphasis his point. "No staying power. Not like the prisoners we used to drag to die on the Wall in the good old days. Why, those were real prisoners."

The Captain sighed nostalgically. "All dead now, of course. Ripped to pieces by wildling hordes, or frozen to death in the ice and snow of the far north ... why, I remember seeing one prisoner march for two days straight from Queensgate to the Bay of Seals, just to deliver a message from the Lord Commander. Got an arrow through the eye when he arrived, mind, since nobody had told the look-outs he'd be coming, but all the same ... great days."

He scowled and dropped back to rest against the crates and chests the crew had taken with them from the ship.

"But these new prisoners ... wouldn't get themselves pointlessly killed even if you asked them nicely."

He pulled a sheet of parchment from a chest, and curled his lip in disdain.

"Got a list of the last bunch of prisoners here. Never heard of any of them. They could learn a thing or two from the old lot though. How to outwit the enemy, how to keep going, how to stay alive. I mean, they could learn all that stuff if the old prisoners weren't all dead, anyway."

Sneering, the captain ripped a scrap of parchment from the sheet and threw it out into the ocean.

As the scrap of parchment bobbed gently in the water, a few names became briefly visible...

House Reyne is Petyr Baelish the First

House Stackspear is Early Earl
