Top Notch Balanter
Does the trillions of debt that america is in come into play in your theory ?Realistically speaking you can't make any serious connections with the modern world and the 7 kingdoms but no doubt someone will prove me wrong
Bad Hound!
North: Russia, agreed (harsh land, un-invadable (is that a word?), hardy population but maybe not as advanced as others)West (Lannister): England (rich, expantionist, use mercenaries)Vale: Switzerland (remote, hard to reach, mountainous)Reach: France (prosperous, fertile, chivalry, not necessarily the most martial of people)Dorne: Spain (hot, a bit different from the rest)Stormlands: Prussia (dunno why but I always see the Baratheons as Germans)Iron Islands: Norway (Viking culture)Kings Landing and area: Belgium (big capital of a big political entity but surrounded by easily invadable lands)Dragonstone: MaltaBeyond The Wall: ScotlandBraavos: VeniceTys: GenoaQarth: IndiaYi Ti: JapanAsshai: ChinaValyria: ItalyNaarth: Cape Verde IslandsSummer Islands: IndonesiaSkagos: IrelandIbben: IcelandDothraki Sea: Central Asia (Mongolia etc.)Meereen, Yunkai, Astapor: dunnoSome leftfield suggestions there, pretty hit-and-miss, I know :crying:

King.In.Yellow
The Stormlands could easily be the northern Balkans. They're mountainous (not as much as the Vale but more so than the Westerlands), populated by martial people, but not exactly wealthy. Hungary would figure if the Stormlands had more plains. The presence of marches indicates Romania or Poland as well. Dragonstone corresponds more easily to any Channel Island. Malta has a significant Arab/Moorish influence, which is what we find in Spain (the Dorne inspiration).
Bad Hound!
Actually I like the Stormlands as the Balkans, you're on to something here.I thought Malta for Dragonstone as it seems to me Dragonstone is rocky and heavily fortified, like Malta. The Channel Islands are not really fortified, and not rocky. You're right about the Arab/Moorish population, but I think that, by the same token, Dragonstone could have a significant Essos minority in its population, as they trade a lot with Essos cities like Braavos, Lys etc. So Dragonstone population could be a bit of a melting pot too.Incidentally, if Westeros is Europe, and Essos Asia (and Sothoryos Africa), then in GRRM world there's no America? King Aemon I
I wouldn't say Dothraki Sea is Afganistan... Dothraki Sea is kind of like Middle Asia, where nomad tribes fight each other.. But surely not Afganistan.. Nobody invaded Dothraki Sea and killed its people..
