Prologue inconsistency?

Long time follower, first time poster so if this question has been asked before, feel free to ignore this.

While rereading the prologue of a Game of Thrones something caught my eye

When Royce asks Will if there was any blood at the wilding camp, Will answers this question with no. If they had just been killed by the others, wouldn't there have been any blood, or are the others now capable of giving of a cold that will kill people?

If you think this can be explained by saying that the wildings were simply already white walkers, I'd would like to point out this is unlikely given the fact that a sentinel was posted (as stated by Will later) and they were laying in very unnatural positions.

So what my question is: How can this be explained, did the others kill those wildlings by a cold they produced themselves, or does anybody have a better explanation?
