What does he want to tell us?If I look at Harry Potter, for example I might say it is about the war against the dark side, against Voldemort. Or it could be about friendship, or about growing up in a changing world.I always thought every good story would have to have an answer to this question. With Soiaf however, I am totally at a loss about what IS behind the story.Is it about the Starks? Is it about the fight against the Others (or "the One enemy")? He only wanted to show a realistic story, about how things really work, even when it's set on a fantasy world. Maybe that's his message: he wants art to show people the real life, not fairy tales.
