Small questions v.10002

Why does Tyrion Tanner have the surname Tanner.

Is it a bastard name like Snow and Storm?

There are no hard rules to naming a bastard. While Rivers/Snow/Stone etc are the norm, it doesn't have to be that, it just makes it easier to know who's a bastard, if you use the traditional names.

Also, how has Arya escaped Varys' radar for so long?

Yoren of the NW cut her hair, and took her out of the city.

How many years pass from the start of Game of Thrones until the end of Dance of Dragons?

IIRC

aGoT lasted about a year.

aSoS/aCoK lasted about a year

aFFC lasted a year

aDwD overlapped aFFC year and went a little more. (arya may be even further ahead of the rest of the story)

IMO 3-3 1/2 years

That seems to be correct. There's a timeline on the Wiki that is made using the hints throughout the books. For instance, Catelyn sometimes reflects that she hasn't seen her husband for months, Dany thinks back to what it was like last year when things seemed so simple and Viserys was alive, that sort of thing.

The timeline, from the start of the series, can be found using this link:

Not seen, but talked about at the start of aGoT Joff has a nameday, the begining of the year 298.

Start of aCoK Joff has another nameday 299.

End of aSoS Joff/Marg purple wedding/nameday 300.

Do you guys think Maester Aemon figured out Jon's parentage or atleast had a guess? He would have known that Rhaegar took Lyanna and then Ned came back with a baby that he refused to talk about. Plus living on the Wall for so long hes prolly heard all about Neds honor and maybe even met him before.

And just to add fuel to the fire, what might he have learned from Benjen?

Where does Jaime's name come from? I am mystified as to what it's doing in this world, let alone on such a major character. Not that it's a bad name, but it doesn't seem to fit, least of all within his own family, where all the males in his bloodline have 'Ty' names. And the sibset Cersei-Jaime-Tyrion is all wrong.

One wonders if it is the same reason proposed for Catelyn's children - named by mother. Although she was a Lannister too. Perhaps she was sick of all the Ty's. You'd think Tyrion would appreciate having the Ty name as a sign of acceptance :)

One wonders if it was somewhat traditional but not required to give a Ty name to a first son at least but looking at the limited family tree we have names seem quite variable and people dont seem to be named for other people - they are interesting - they dont even have names similar to others in the book such as Sybell Spicer and Sybelle Glover.

Did Ned really return greatsword Dawn to the Daynes? I've read it in the forums but please could someone tell me in which chapter I can find that info??

Thanks so much

If you are asking if it is confirmed, Yes GRRM has confirmed that Dawn is at Starfell.

If you just wanted to read about that part, IDK. I thought it would have a Ref/note on the wiki, but could not find it in the 3 places that mention it happening.

In AGoT when Catelyn and Ser Rodrik are sailing to KL, Catelyn remembers that Littlefinger wrote her a letter after Brandon Stark died, but she never read the letter, she threw it in the fire. Anyone has any ideea what LF wrote in the letter?

That in 15 years he was going to start a chain of events that will ruin her future family. If only Cat read that letter.

So what's up with Harry Strickland, the commander of the Golden Company? JonCon constantly comments on how much of a wimp, it seems like there's 'something' to this. Is he destined to turncloaks or something? Was he awarded the position illegitimately, and if so then by who? Varys, Illyrio?

I guess this is just speculation, but I didn't feel it was worthy of its own thread (particularly considering I don't have a theory of my own for what his deal/purpose is).

I don't think Varys and Illyrio have that sort of control over the Golden Company. They probably elect their own leaders. Pure speculation, but since he was the company paymaster it's possible he bribed people to vote for him. Also possible he was just the highest ranking or longest serving member after Toyne died. I think he's just supposed to be incompetent and never was much of a fighter.

This seems like a n00b appropriate place to ask for some guidance. I've seen it speculated that Young Griff isn't a Dragon at all but instead some plot from Illyrio/Varys. Can someone point to a thread with an overview of this theory/idea? It'd be much appreciated.
