(Book Spoilers) - Going too easy on Theon?

Recommended Posts

I liked the Theon parts, and I think the torture will continue. However, I think the bulk of it will be off-screen. We will definitely hear about him getting his dick flayed or else I'll be disappointed. Not because I want it to happen to Theon, but because it's so terrible and so cruel that it really summarizes what Ramsay did to him.

Yeah I agree, as well as being another way to mess with Theon's head its also designed to tie in with what Robb tells Cat about Theon's whereabouts and what transpired at Winterfell. To a show viewer it was Dagmer and his ironborn that hooded and dragged Theon off, if they revelaed that he is being tortured at the Dreadfort and Ramsey and men torched Winterfell it would expose Roose's plot/knowledge of his son's actions.

This was a good warmup round. And it will get much, much worse. It has to is they want audiences to ever root for ol' Theon again. I watched it with my wife who has never read the books, and she kept saying, good, Theon deserve everything he gets. I tell her he's beyond fucked. I'm partially going to enjoy watching my wife to see if her opinion changes of him in the next few seasons. As for the actual torture: I think we'll see the first strip of flesh flayed onscreen, then other will happen offscreen once they convey to the viewers what flaying actually involves doing. Most of the skin that gets flayed can be covered up with clothes. I think he'll lose a finger or two, which can be done with green wrap and CGI. I think like Tyrion's nose, Theon won't have any of his teeth removed. At least, I'd be surprised if they did. I'm curious about little Theon though. Will it be alluded to but never confirmed like in the books? Will it be confirmed outright? Or not happen at all? I don't want it to happen, but I must admit the thought that it probably DID is part of what made me decide he'd been punished enough for his sins.

lol!! tbh I felt like his performance was a lot more subtle and amazing than just screaming/writhing in pain ... you could just feel the wheels turning as he is desperately trying to figure out what he should say to make it stop. I loved how he was cowering in terror when boy/Ramsay walked up and took the hood off. His desperate pleas "don't leave me" were heartbreaking. I'm seriously in love with Alfie's portrayal of Theon.

Oh, yeah. Alfie is great. Again, like Gleeson, he should be more featured in the show promo material.

But also, if we stick straight to the books, his presence in the show wouldn't be more than a couple of minutes and could be filmed all in one day. They need to extend the whole thing, and they won't show everything in the same first episode.

Will they imply that he got castrated? I remember when he has to eat Jeyne out, that he says ''I'm not even a man'' or something like that.

It's implied pretty heavily in a few portions of the books that he's been castrated. In addition to that quote, at one point he reminisces that he lost his fingers and toes "and that other thing."

I just thought the whole Theon scene was really poorly done. There was real horror to it, no suspense. To a non-book viewer i expect it was more confusing than anything else. Really, really disappointed.

As for the bloke who 'comes to rescue him', i expect that'll be

A ploy from Ramsay to teach Theon who's boss, like we heard about in the books

I still think my idea about keeping Theon's identity a mystery, at least in the beginning, would have worked better.

Definetely a ploy. After they get the last bit of torture out of Theon, the dude looks over at Lord Snow and he comes up pretending to be someone saved by Theon's Sister. . .how did Theon ever buy that?

I do not claim to be an expert on the subject matter (shudder) but I believe a man can still have sex without any testicles. And, "that other thing" if I remember correctly is distinctively a singular term...

I'm hoping D&D handle that like the books, actually. Have him imply it strictly via dialogue, from the book.

Yeah,it is said even in the books, that the eunuchs made in Yunkay/Meereen are still capable of erection. I think they will simply suggest it,or show us Theon afterwards with lots of blood on his crotch.

I thought he had his dick flayed, not that he was castrated.

I'm not a fan of torture porn, like I said I just think it needs to be sickening, grueling to watch for narrative purposes.

Also, to subvert audience desires for vengeance. Make them be glad he's getting hurt, then just drag it out so long and bad that they feel sickened and ashamed for having felt that way. That would be brilliant.
