A direct answer would have been what the first person who replied said - that he doesn't need to be there for the wedding. The rudeness was all the sarcastic shit you threw in before making the same point. That's not being sensitive - you were rude, period. Again, you were not clear in the fact that you were saying that he didn't need to be there for the wedding but would be there afterward. Hence asking for clarification. Far safer than making an assumption. It's not like I accused you of saying that Oberyn will be eliminated from the show.

This is what I originally said, that you misunderstood. Sorry if it wasn't clear enough for you. I don't see anywhere in there where I remotely suggest Oberyn being "eliminated from the show." As you can see, all I said was he didn't need to be at the PW.

:agree:

Everyone acts as though Oberyn is there because of the wedding, when he's not. He's there to join the Small Council because of the Myrcella exchange. There is really no reason he needs to be at the wedding, especially now we have Tywin as an additional possible poisoner.

You made that leap on your own, and suggesting I said something in the process I clearly didn't say, and you call me rude and continue to do so for calling you out on it, and directly answering your question.

I feel like the only fan/viewer who found much of the Dany shots and soundtrack cheesy. Yes, cheesy. I'm not trying to be a hater. I wanted to love her ballsy move just as I did while reading. But I can't help but see these scenes ending up on The Soup. It was like cringing during Dune or Waterworld when the sets were noticeable. Everything else was great, but as soon as the Unsullied changed formation with their shields glistening in the sunset I couldn't help but laugh at how much the scene evoked 300 ... in a bad way. It was a jarring contrast to the aesthetic of every other episode up to this point. That could have been a good thing, but it was a fail from my perspective.

The Unsullied are very clearly directly inspired from the Spartans. The story of the 3000 Unsullied holding off against unstoppable odds immediatly puts to mind the 300 at Thermopolyae. Its Martins quite blunt way of saying "yes, they're Spartans and they're that good.". Theres also the fact that their weapons and tactics are hoplite phalanxs and their intensive training and brutal regime clearly mirrors the Spartan training. The only difference is that these are slaves and not freemen like the Spartans. So its perfectly acceptable that the Unsullied should conjur up images of the Spartans from 300 with their discipline, weapons and tactics; plus general ascetic. Which in keeping with the books as Martin is pretty clear that Unsullied=Castrated Slave Spartans.

I don't know whether you mean because Essos is too Oriental for hoplites to show up, but you should remember this is a fantasy land where not every culture is exactly like its real world inspiration. Also, Ghiscari culture does draw a lot from Greco-Roman culture anyway; such as the fighting pits mirroring the colliseum. You'll also notice the nobles wearing toga like garments.

The mutiny at Crasters always bugged me since i first read it in the book. Seriously, why would Mormont be so protective of Craster? he is a twisted wildling who starves Mormonts men to death while constantly trying his patience. i dont buy the "We need men like Craster" BS. if they needed his keep they could just set up a garrison from the NW to guard it and feed the pigs.

It's not directly in the books no - I'd imagine GRRM had some input on this because the entire writing staff (including Martin) was very hush about Theon in this season.. I have my theories on why they added it and I'm enjoying it so far.. sadly it's going to be getting much worse for poor Alfie but he seemed really excited to be able to act out these scenes from his interviews.

Oh and as this is the book spoilers thread I guess it's no secret as to "who saved Theon".. I don't want to spoil it for you but it's obviously someone you do not want to call "bastard" lest you want an arrow down your freakin gullet :P

I agree

Episode 9 is named "Rains of Castamere" I'd put my life savings down the Red Wedding happens in episode 9

I agree, jons nissa

...Well after his true father gave him away, disowned him when he came back, and then left him for dead at Winterfell. I'll take the man who raised me even if he had to be cold out of necessity over the former any day. Ned Stark was really the only father he did have.

It's possible Oberyn doesn't appear until after the wedding. However, he needs to be in a few episodes before the duel so we can actually care about him. The scene would lose a lot if it's a guy we've barely seen trading blows with the Mountain. Bronn was pretty much established with his Egan duel, as before he was just a competent sellsword, but that's more like a badass introduction. Oberyn ain't got that option.

Because allies beyond the Wall are useful. The NW doesn't have a responsibility to Craster's wives/daughters, only to the "realm" South of the Wall. And violating Guest Right is taboo no matter how shitty your host is

Im surprised so few have mentioned this, but i was amazed by how many bones they threw us book fanatics in the sept of baelor scene, in terms of references to the Lore. I never even dreamed of hearing Aerion Brightflames name mentioned on the show!

Show Joff really comes off as a closet Targaryen loyalist though :)

sorry for the double post, but i do think Berics reveal was a bit clumsy. they built up his introduction as if he was a character that the audience would recognize and instantly go like "SHIT GOT REAL", when the non book readers has no idea who he is.

i was watching it with a friend who was like "wait, am i supposed to recognize this guy? i sure dont remember seeing him before"

Just curious, did the "Previously on..." segment include that clip from S1 where Ned sends Beric on his mission? I skipped it this time around. I know they included Selmy's dismissal for the S3 premiere, but I could see them skipping Beric's intro since he's being played by another dude altogether.

I'm pretty disappointed that it appears that Willas doesn't exist. I wondered when in last week's scene, where Loras escorts Sansa to meet with the QoT, the conversation between Loras and Sansa was cordial to the end, instead of ending in frosty silence and Loras ditching Sansa as quickly as possible.

And what happened to D&D and the fact they made Loras unequivocally gay? Or are we going to see a future scene with Littlefinger explaining the facts of life to Sansa?

Mostly I'm upset with all of the time some of us devoted speculating about the mysterious Willas, and the fact he could end up being revealled as the true power behind the Tyrells. Seems D&D know something we don't know (so what else is new).

Ros is a mary sue? That doesnt make sense. Are you suggesting that ever since Benioff and Weiss first read AGoT, they have fantasized about being medieval hookers?

You do know what a 'mary sue ' is , dont you?

She goes from being a peasant hooker way up in the unsophisticated North(whose top ruler couldn't even handle the Byzantine politics and scheming of the South), to running the biggest whorehouse in the biggest city in Southern Westeros.

She is also recruited by the Spymaster of the kingdom to spy on one of the most cunning and dangerous players of the Game of Thrones. Not only is she successful at this, she makes Littlefinger look like a fool and discovers what is one of his biggest plots(taking Sansa), which arguably makes her smarter than anyone in the books, because nobody caught on to this scheme of Littlefinger's in them.

If she keeps going at this rate, she'll be the first person in Westeros to discover Jon Snow's true parentage.

TBH I much, much prefer the idea of the family being more-or-less lead by strong, savvy, cunning women like QoT and Margaery behind the scenes than some kind of secret Willas conspiracy. That's one of the coolest, most defining traits of the Tyrells.

What is Varys up to?

The show makes it look like he suggested the Sansa/Loras match. Wouldn't a Tyrell-Stark alliance work against his plans? If the Tyrells are allied with the Lannisters and the Starks, then wouldn't that make it harder for Aegon to conquer?

Unless he knows that the Lannisters will find out about the Tyrell plans and marry Sansa to Tyrion instead, which would somehow benefit Aegon. That is some next level shit right there if true.

Edit: Nevermind, there's already a thread on this in this forum.

I think it's impossible to tell without hindsight. Anything that could possibly cause tension between or harm any of the usurpers would help his cause, which is a pretty broad motivation.

86th IBCT eh?

The farther we get into this season, the more I think both the Red and Purple weddings are going to happen this year.

I just can't see how, without horribly shorting the PW buildup. Among many other things, we need to be introduced the Red Viper several episodes before the PW happens, or there's no room for Red Viper - Tyrion conversation outside of a jail cell. I won't be surprised if it happens well before episode 9 next season, but I really, really doubt we'll see it this season.
