[Book Spoilers] EP306 Discussion

Recommended Posts

Hey -- a prophecy from Melisandre! Arya will kill someone with brown eyes, someone with blue eyes and someone with green eyes. Any guesses?

What I get from that is not that Arya will kill these people, is that she will become these people i.e. foreshadowing her becoming a Faceless (Wo)Man

I wish that after every ep GRRM released a statement saying what he thought about each change and weather they were sanctioned by him.

NOt necessary. He has already said he has released creative control after establishing the people putting the series together were trustworthy. He isnt going to critique them or second guess them. His contribution is mainly advising them about events and characters who need to be kept or who can be discarded given future events in the books.

Is there an explanation as to why Littlefinger spoke about "Aegon's enemies" to Varys? Did I misshear or is it this big?

He was talking about Aegon the Conqueror, who made the throne.

He was talking about Aegon the Conqueror, who made the throne. Why is that big?

One more thing that went over my head then :frown5: I just did not fallow it, it would seem. "Lies we agreed to tell" threw me. I thought about later books.

My least favorite episode of this season.

The Good

1. Despite a couple of not very good effects shots, the scaling of the wall was a pretty effective action sequence.

2. Cersei and Tyrion. I am fine with this this more restrained, almost defeated, Cersei. I am hopeful the deaths of Joffrey and subsequently Tywin will send her over the edge to a more crazed Cersie. The fall will only be more severe, so I am fine with it.

3. The Joffrey and Ros scene. I was never a fan of Ros, but that was a disturbing moment.

The Bad

1. Vary's and Littlefinger - I am exhausted with all this out in the open game playing. I know its more challenging to try and showcase the planning and motivations of the behind the scenes players, but the idea that these two are continually just going to joust out in the open, is so silly. They look amateurish.

2. Oleanna and Tywin - Please see above. They are players, they should be playing the game. A far more interesting scene would have been the two of them avoiding the elephants in the room (Cersei's incest and Loras's sexuality) without explicitly mentioning either.

3. Mel, Gendry, Arya and the Brotherhood - Yes, I understand the desire to give some of your actors something to do and reduce the number of roles in the series, but this failed on a couple of different levels. How on earth did Mel know where Gendry was? If she had a vision regarding Arya - where was the follow-up questions for this high born girl? You just walk away? It was just clunky and didn't make any sense at all.

The Ugly

Theon - I have hated these scenes since Day 1 of Season 3. And for good reason... nothing is happening. Its just simple mind fuckery and torture porn. There was a reason George didn't include a bunch of Theon POV's chapters in Storm of Swords, it wasn't necessary. What's so frustrating, beyond the fact that its eating up so much screen time, is that one or two well written scenes would have been more than sufficient (Please see the opening scene of Zero Dark Thirty or Joffrey and Ros this week!)

As far as being a standalone episode, yeah I'd say it was average for the series (That's still saying a lot!) However, I think the payoff will be simply amazing. I was just laughing at my unsullied friends, in my head of course, WHO HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING TO HIT THEM in three weeks. Also, I think the Jon/Ygritte dynamic is getting stronger on screen. When Ygritte eventually dies in Jon's arms at Castle Black...well, needless to say, that was another time I threw the book on the ground and paced around the room. I cannot wait until next week.

I think this has been mentioned before but does anyone think that the non-book readers should have no illusions as to who has Theon? Every shot they show of Theon on that torture rack looks exactly like Roose Bolton's banner. Especially during tonight's dinner with Roose, Jaime, and Brienne displaying a flayed man directly behind them while they're eating. It's getting pretty obvious. I hope I'd be smart enough to notice that even if I hadn't read the books.

Paul Kaye's depiction of Thoros keeps getting better and better. I liked the revealing of his history as to why he was in King's Landing and the type of priest he was before the war. The merging of Melisandre and the Ghost of High Heart was an interesting way to include some of the things said about Arya in the books.

I was really hoping Jon would just throw Orell off the wall when they got to the top. Those wall scenes were just awesome. They made me think of how dead I'd be if I even attempted to climb a wall like that.

The repeated "LORAS IS A HOMO" reminders are getting pretty silly, although I did laugh at the "sword swallower" comment.

Those Freys are so weaselly it's great. I like that they included the line about Walder Frey having bad experiences when it comes to lengthy engagements. Ha.

Oh. And Ramsay blowing the horn to wake up Theon was a nice reminder of Theon vowing to kill the man who was blowing the horn outside of Winterfell.

I was actually kind of bummed to see Ros die. She was a good way to get inside different characters heads. I guess the writers are listening to wishes of some of the more vocal character-hater-fans.

No! I love the books but Ros was still one of my favorites!

I don't like where they are going. Just make him a King's Guard already. He should have been at the end of season 2 but I get that they didn't want to so they could exclude an extra character (the older brother). But now that the purpose is served, just make him one already.

Have to say I liked the Jon scenes, really exciting. Book summarized them too quickly.

Also, I think they can explain why Gendry will go back to the BWB after Davos saves him, if he does end up back there. Melisandre can just be like "I was going to pay them anyway, but after I told them who your dad was they agreed you should go home to your uncle."

If he escapes it will be pretty simple for them to tell him that. They were just trying to reunite him with his real family. It's not their fault they didn't know she was into burning people to hatch dragons made of rock.

I have to agree I am finding the Theon scenes completely tiresome and uninteresting at this point.

On my rewatches of season 3 I always FF through the Theon scenes.

What Ramsay does to break Theon is more compelling and horrifying if completely left to the audiences imagination. Watching it happen in real time is a big turn off.

What a horrible episode, by far the worst of the season. A season I am not liking at all, by the way.

Also hi, it's my first post in the forums :D

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that based on the sound of Bran's voice in seasons 1&2 compared to his voice now in season 3 it's safe to say Bran obviously hit puberty hard in between seasons 2&3?Hahaha but really......

Yeah, but Dany is supposed to be 14 and she looks 20. I got the impression age wasn't a factor in the show. As long as he doesn't grow a long beard and get wrinkles he'll be fine no matter how long the show lasts.

I really liked this episode, but it wasn't as great as last week's. I always think this but... too little Jaime & Brienne! Although we will see a lot more of them next week.

I was shocked to see Ros go the way she did, but it was definitely about time the non-reader viewers were reminded just how bad Joffrey is. It was nicely done though, with Littlefinger's monologue voicing over the montage.

I liked Cersei's & Tyrion's little chat. I'm liking the few scenes between them that aren't venomous. They might have issues with one another, but sometimes they're just a sister and brother teaming up to find solutions to a common problem. They really only have each other to confide in about family matters, and it's nice to watch when they do.

So, Arya and Melisandre will meet again, and some foreshadowing about the Faceless Men! It could be interpreted as her killing men with those eye colours as well, but that's less interesting as that could be anyone. They're such common colours.

Loras was wonderfully awkward in his scene with Sansa. Clearly not comfortable at all, hehe.

Oh and, Theon. As uncomfortable I am with watching his scenes with Ramsay, I do think they are necessary for non-reader viewers. If they aren't shown what horrors he lives through during this time, they won't understand or sympathize with him later on. In the books we were able to understand Theon's journey through his thoughts, but that's not possible on screen. I couldn't actually watch, but was Ramsay flaying his finger at the end? I thought it looked like it. Another hint...
