[No Spoilers] The Ros Appreciation thread

Recommended Posts

Esme Bianco is a lovely person & actress and it's a shame she took so much shit for such an innocuous character. I didn't mind Ros, and I thought her scene with Shae on the docks this season was really sweet. I was kind of hoping she'd live forever and become a Lady or something just to troll the folks that hated her~.

I can safely say I never expected her death to be so abrupt, and if shock and surprise is what they were after they succeeded - her murder hit me harder in its bleakness and brutality than just about any other moment in the show thus far, but it certainly felt true to the books in atmosphere. RIP Ros.

Loved Ros. Thought it was brilliant using her as a character who combined a handful of named whores from the books, so we could become invested in her, and so non-book readers wouldn't get lost with too many names/faces to keep up with.

I wanted her to outlive everyone, especially to piss off the H8er trolls.

Glad they gave her a magnificent send off that doubles down on how evil Joffrey is.

A lot of fans love Ros.

Spoiler
When karma catches up with Joffrey, those fans will cheer even louder now.

Hope Esme lands an AWESOME gig immediately.

I'm surprised this character breeds such emotions. It was a decent book deviation imho, well played, and they killed her when she becomes useless (seeing LF is now going for the Vale i cant imagine what they will do with her). I don't really care much about her, definitely not hating her though.

Not trying to be a hater here, but I just don't see the appeal of Ros as a character. There's just not a lot of substance to her personality, she never had any great lines, and she doesn't really do anything. Can anyone clue me in as to what I'm missing?

You could make the same argument about Chataya or any other whore in the books who plays minor part. Ros is minor whore 1 + minor whore 2 + ... + minor whore n, with some added characterisation. She provided an important way of developing other characters in the show. She was a good secondary character.

Not a fan of all the soft-core porn scenes, but Ros was at least gorgeous to look at. Liked her character and thought she did a good job with it even though, again, the porn.

Fantastic death, and I mean that in the sense that it was shocking, emotionally powerful, and made some strong character statements about other characters. Brilliant way to take her out, really, because her death left a stronger impression than we'd likely have thought possible.

I get that she served a purpose on the show, but like you say it, was to develop aspects of other characters. I never felt she developed much of a character of her own. I mean she was a comon born whore who wanted to better herself. What else can you say? That's more an archetype than a real character.

I love Ros. All her scenes are on point, she's a delight to watch. Props to Esmé Bianco.

I'm outraged that she died like this. It's not ok to glamourise sexual violence and torture, even to show that LF and Joffrey are sadistic dirtbags.

How was sexual violence "glamourized?" It was portrayed as horrible, committed by a despicable character, the actual violence was not shown, and even the final scene was only on the screen for a few seconds.

What you're really objecting to is having sexual violence portrayed period, which is a ridiculous limitation to place on fiction. What, are we supposed to pretend it doesn't exist?

At least we now know why she got so much screen time lately. Killing off some random whore wouldn't have had the same dramatic impact.

No, it's not OK to glamorise sexual violence. Thankfully, the sexual violence wasn't glamorised, so no issues there.

She'd been in three very short scenes before this episode this season.

Exactly. Hiding from an issue does not make it any less extant.

All of them unnecessary additions - or so we thought.

I always liked Esme in the role (she's gorgeous and very charismatic) but thanks to her prominence in all the silly sexposition of S1 I didn't appreciate Ros as a character until her amusing scene with Pycelle. I still chuckle at her plainly evident boredom and disgust with the old fart. Since then I've enjoyed the direction the showrunners decided to take with her - smart, ambitious, even compassionate - she seemed to be moving up in the world and had become a fairly well-rounded character. So yeah, her death in such a cruel manner was an unpleasant surprise.

Great Actress, beautiful woman in a role that served a purpose. Killed off in a ridiculous, gratuitous way (Joffrey asking LF for a whore to kill for fun? No.)

And I actually think we have to thank some hateful bookreaders for this, whom D&D wanted to appease with this.

edit: spelling..

No, I doubt that, much as I'd like to believe it was all their fault. Littlefinger's KL scenes are over and she was his girl first and foremost. And I would disagree that it was ridiculous or gratuitous. It was emotional and powerful. The word gratuitous has been severely overused on this forum.

Don't take this as Ros "hate" but I think everyone should agree that many of her scenes were pretty useless. I like the idea of using her for sexposition (Tyrion's intro, theon's backstory, littlefinger's, among other few scenes) but I feel there was a much better way, aside from Tyrion.

That being said, I do appreciate the actress, the character grew some interest in me, especially when she talked to Shae about Sansa. I loved that! And her death was a complete shock. I literally gasped, and then said outloud "the forums are gonna go crazy!"

Edit: my main gripe with her is that we get so little Arya time when she's clearly a fan favorite, yet we got a long scene with her crying over Barra and Littlefinger pretending to comfort her and then threatening her with his bad investments speech. After this episode I look back on that scene with a bit of irony and appreciation, but I still think it went on too long.

And I think littlefinger proclaiming her as a 'bad investment' so he killed her can be seen as a parallel to D&D's feelings of her use. She was a 'bad investment' in that there was so much negative fan reaction. So they killed her off.

I think the Tyrion, Pycelle and especially Theon scenes were fine, good even. But the Littlefinger one...even I will admit to finding that cringeworthy.

Actually I agree now. Pycelle's scene showed who he really was.

But in the infamous littlefinger scene... "play with her ass... do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound?... I can't beat them, so I'm going to fuck them." That scene was not executed as good as it could've been.

the entire series celebrates violence with a veneer of 'look how horrible these people are"

no, what we are objecting to is how easy this violence goes down, the way the violence is always depicted from the pov of the sadistic agent and how little this is recognized

i really like ros on every level. she provided a commentary on the trap she and others experience, especially women.

her protective impulse regarding sansa was right on

she was smart and courageous
