It has been said that the show's greatest flaw is losing the subtility of the characters and events from the book. I totally agree with this point. They're so filling up the show with cliche's that they're losing parts of the story and characters:

  • Tyrion just whines about everything and looks childish. But of course he has no flaws, he has to be our obvious hero caught between duty and love. And Shae feels betrayed. She always does, She only complains to poor Tyrion. Seriously, how could he fall in love with her?. Good thing there's Bronn around.

  • Jon scenes; even more cliches: i love you, but you have to trust me and leave your people...but i love you more, and Jon is not the right one for you, i am. Dramatic intent, fails hard IMO. Ygritte's and Jon's relationship was left aside a lot in the books, but i still don't believe that both are in love by what we've been shown. Tormund trying to be funny, doesn't mention his enormous d*ck.

  • Tywin doesn't even look as scary and cool headed this last two episodes as his renown tells about him. Even his coward grandchild Joffrey dares to discuss with him. This scene could have been done so much better. And why talk about Dany and not talk about the war?. I feel like since Tywin arrived to KL he has done nothing more about the war which is going on. There are Northmen in Harrenhall and he just talks and talks with Olenna about gay relationships and with Joffrey about dragons. He's supposed to be the hand of the king...

  • Sansa and Margaery talking about sex: another filler which doesn't do any right to the characters. Seriously, now it's supposed to mean that Margaery is some kind of nympho? Are the Tyrells all perverts or what? (from Westeros point of view)

  • Theon's torture...nothing much to say about that. Producers obviously like porn and violence, so why not mix them both? It would have been so much better if they showed us how he disappears in Bolton's torture chambers and then reappeared in the next season all psichologically and physically destroyed, leaving all that happened to our imagination.

  • Mel and Gendry and her revelation. Just a scene that tries to bring some epicness into the story: dramatic music, cool special effects and so on. All this for such a little talk? When i watched it i thought it was ridiculous

  • Robb and the Tarlys marching north. I seriously think they are destroying both Black Fish and Edmure's characters. One looks like a big bully, the other like Cat's stupid brother. And Talisa is now pregnant? Robb is going to meet her parents at Volantis? Why does it sound like they're trying to put up some drama but fail epicly? And leaving the deepest and most dramatic figure (Cat) of the group aside like they do again and again this seeson is a crime.

On the other hand, i liked the scene with Dany, though we have again our unnecessary special effects-show off moment. Arya's scene seemed well resolved too, but it seemed too easy for her to escape from them (?), and Jaime rescueing Brienne was a good one IMO.

The whole build up was pretty cool, starting with the dialogue with Qyburn to him jumping in the Pit and escaping just at time. Though i must say i missed a bit of opposition by Vargo Hoat's men. I mean, if they're refusing 300 gold coins 'cause they now they're going to die soon, why caring about what a useless Jaime and some Bolton's soldiers say? Pretty unlogic. And why the hell are they all calling Vargo Locke now? Bolton called him clearly Vargo Hoat in the previous episode.

My conclusion is: many scenes used just to fill up time and are pointless, and many dialogues which may appear good written but seem not levelled to the complexity of the charachters.

It's tru that there are good effects though somehow abused, and brilliant acting and scenery, but the script seems more and more a deception to me.

I give it a 6

I thought that this episode, while still being entertaining overall, was tied with episode 2 as being my least favorite overall so far this season. I gave it a 7. There were the usual high and low points, but to me the highs weren't quite as high as most of the other episodes in season 3. For example, for as much as I was anticipating the bear pit scene, for some reason it just didn't deliver to its fullest potential -- it wasn't terrible, it just felt flat. Too short, maybe? Not enough time to build a full sense of peril?

What worked for me:

  • Tywin/Joff - There should be a picture of Charles Dance in the dictionary next to the word "presence." It's always great to see Joff squirm -- it looked like he was ready to soil his small clothes. Just a brilliant scene.
  • Tyrion/Bronn - Though extremely short, I really enjoyed this scene of these two just kicking back and having a bit of a "heart to heart." I've really missed Bronn in these past several episodes, and I think that some of my favorite character building moments in the series come when these two interact. Kudos to Peter Dinklage and Jerome Flynn for really nailing the essence of Tyrion and Bronn.
  • Jaime/Brienne - I was moved by their farewell scene, particularly where Brienne for the first time addresses him as Ser Jaime. This scene had more impact on me than the closing scene, oddly enough. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Gwendoline Christie have been consistently amongst the strongest performers throughout this season -- they may well end up being my co-choices for MVP of season 3.
  • Margary/Sansa - Natalie Dormer has grown almost exponentially in my esteem in her portrayal of Margaery. When we were first introduced to Margaery, I thought that it was a terrible casting job and barely recognized the character as being Margaery -- I couldn't imagine what the show was trying to do. Now, I've come to really relish this actor's portrayal of this re-imagined character. While I think that Sophie Turner didn't quite match Natalie in terms of performance, I have to give plus points to the character of Sansa for finally showing some self-awareness.

What didn't work for me:

  • Theon/Ramsay - I would be so very happy if we didn't have any more torture scenes this season, thank you. I think that EVERYONE has gotten the picture of what's going down by now. And of course, to make matters "better," let's throw in some sex-n-nudity. URGGGGHHHHH.
  • Robb/Talisa/Cat/Tullys - Watching the scene were they are discussing Walder Frey, it's hard to believe that they are the tight, united family group that they supposedly are -- what with the Blackfish cutting Cat off so he can discuss excrement, and Edmure's constant scowling, and everyone basically barking at each other. The dynamics felt really off in this scene.
  • The bear pit - As mentioned above, this scene seemed anti-climatic and was a real disappointment to me.
  • Bran/Jojen/Meera/Osha/Hodor - Bran's story line continues to struggle this season. While this scene wasn't the weakest this season, it just felt like a bit of a toss-in in this episode. While Osha's back story was interesting, and provided some rationale for the way she has been behaving, some of the other dialogue was pathetic. Osha "forbids" Jojen from speaking to Bran?? Really?? Just ridiculous.

What was good:

  • Dany's scene. GRRM managed to do what D&D have been struggling with all season: show Dany the person (welcoming, compassionate, etc.) and then Dany the Khaleesi with her over-the-top faux arrogance.
  • Jaime and Brienne's scenes. The Bear Pit wasn't as good as the book, but it was evidently due to the limitations of television production rather than a superfluous decision to "enhance" the source material as with other changes.
  • The Tywin/Joffrey scene. I liked the reference to Daenerys; it was certainly a diversion from the book that they're both aware of her, but it's a nice reminder that she's a growing threat.
  • Arya's character development is finally kicking in. At the beginning of the season it felt like I was watching a different character; but now she's getting to the point that she should be at. Her scenes are going to be heartbreaking from this point onwards (like they should have been since Ned's death).

What was bad:

  • Theon. Ugh. I've already made myself very clear on this issue, but I don't believe he should have been in this season. Or, if he had to be included, I wish it had just been a couple of brief appearances rather than a character arc - honestly, his story could have finished in episode 4. Now it's just tiring and unnecessary.
  • Catelyn's lines being interrupted so the Blackfish could talk (out of character) about wet shit. It was an insult to the character and her fans. I have no doubt that was not in GRRM's first script.
  • Gratuitous female nudity.
  • Sansa using Tyrion's dwarfism as her reason to not want to marry him. WTF. It's out-of-character and stupid. Tyrion is actively working against her family; she shouldn't need more reason than "He's a Lannister".
  • Tyrion's characterisation is still dreadful. And I'm tired of seeing scenes between him and Bronn.

The rest I either don't remember or care nothing for. The episode was mostly filler; I guess that's what happens when you spread material so thinly and give too much screentime to a storyline which doesn't advance the plot in any way.

ETA: I'll give it 7/10. My ratings so far:

  • 3x01 - 7/10
  • 3x02 - 6/10
  • 3x03 - 8/10
  • 3x04 - 9/10
  • 3x05 - 8/10
  • 3x06 - 5/10
  • 3x07 - 7/10

This is actually a joke, I find it funny how people are complaining about all the exposition and "boring" moments. If you want to see hack and slash blood fest go watch Spartacus. This is a serious show not meant for small minded people. It's also funny how the majority of people giving it a negative review have less than 100-200 posts, it tells me that alot of people have jumped on the bandwagon expecting action every second scene. I can understand if some people didn't like the episode, but if you're complaining that it's boring then you haven't got a clue and should switch channels to something more suited to you like Two and a Half Men.

I give it a 6...

Very little happened, exept for the underwhelming scene with the bear. I do thinkbthat you could easily miss this episode out and not miss much.

Pros

Twyin/Joffrey - the first real scene (i think) where you see these two fully interact, Charles Dance was great here. Came across calm but imposing. I felt he put joffrey in his place very well.

Jon/Ygritte - alot of their scenes bore me, im a big fan of Jon in the books, iv got nothing against Kit's portrayal, there just seems to be very little in Jon's scenes that exite me

Jaime/Brienne - yet again probably the highlight of the episode. The look From NCW after he was called 'Ser Jaime' you really see his developement

Boy/Theon - everyone has their own view on the whores...i didnt like it, i feel the scene could have been better without it. Id like them to hurry up with the reveal of 'boy'. Allen's acting was good you could see plainly a broken and terrified Theon

These are the main things for me...i felt the margery/sansa scene was pointless, tyrion and bronn had great chemistry as usual...Shae hes your a whore surely the writers can get er something else to say in an episode...the yunkai scene is setting up to what will hopefully be another epic encounter in essos

Overall an average episode, one of the weakest so far

There's a difference between action and plot-advancement. Season 1 was slow in action but from episode 4 onwards was full of scenes that advanced the plot. Season 3 has been mostly filler unfortunately.

If you actually read the comments well (leaving your hatred aside) you would wonder how all the people you complain about are just saddened at how the characters are being build, at how the dialogues just make no sense or are underdeveloped to them.

Black Fish talking about wet shit and Tyrion crying all day long about his love seem well done to you?

The only significant problem with this episode was that it was somewhat boring. They are clearly preparing for the RW, so I hope this is the deep breath before the plunge. From the preview, we can see that episode 8 will rise the expectations again. We have to judge the season as a whole, not just by two less good episodes.

Pretty solid episode, in my opinion. Yes, not much action, but there wasn't too much of that in that books at that point either (I mostly remember rain, rain, rain ... and mud) but some nice dialogue.

I gave it 8/10. I am fine with not every single scene serving some "plot advancement" or "character development", there needs to be some breathing room too.

On a side note: I was really surprised at how relieved I was we won't be seeing anymore of the land beyond the Wall. It was really bleak and depressing and sucked big time.

I think he is quite right ... the show is just different from the books, get over it already. This coming from a diehard bookreader who was on the forums before this one even existed (the old black one)

What does the number of posts have anything to do with our opinion? Its a forum not a heirachy. Iv been reading these forums for nearly a year now only just decided to get on board and contribute...

Without trailing off though, there is no bandwagon...iv been very impressed with this season on a whole, just not this episode...theres lot a whole lot of seriousness involved when Blackfish is talking about wet shits...

Im glad you enjoyed it though and congrats on your number of posts...

The wet shit moment is comic relief and I hate Shae so every scene with her is bad for me.

The dialogue makes no sense because you're either not paying attention or you haven't read the book(which isn't a crime). And some characters are underdeveloped because there is only so much that can be fit into 50 minutes of screen time. Blame GRRM for introducing so many characters if you want lol.

Did I claim it was a hierarchy? All I said that majority of bad reviews come from people who have a small number of posts indicating new users who have different and misguided expectations of what the show is producing. Don't get all defensive dude I just made an observation.

And thank you, I take great pride in my large number of posts lolol

Gave it a 7.

Best parts were Ramsay, Jaime, Dany and naked Talisa.

Arya scene was just there to progress the plot and wasn't much of anything for those who have read the book. Jon/Ygritte scenes are just to make later events more upsetting. Tywin/Joff was all set-up for episode 10. Bran scene was boring as always. Mel/Gendry scene was okay for what it was, looking forward to them getting back to Dragonstone. Blackfish continues to be an asshole.

I liked the episode and I have no problems with it being slow. Sure it gets a bit worse when you see one episode per week, which is a pretty bad way to watch a TV series in my opinion (I only do that on shows that I absolutely can't wait for, which are very very few ones), but it's good in a way since so many people these days need to learn patience. The generation of entitlement is growing up.

Just because the plot isn't advanced in every scene doesn't mean that it's bad in my opinion since this pace allows things to breathe and not suffer as much from the higher tempo of the TV medium. Still the episode had a few big character moments, especially for Jaime who took an enormous step. Jon also continued what he started a couple of weeks ago and has cheered up from his very brooding personality and this was one of the best episodes for him in the entire series. Funnily enough people still seem to think that some characters are written wrong, even when George is writing them, which is fun.

I also still chuckle at how uncomfortable some viewers seem to be with nudity. Personally I don't care especially either way (neither offended nor aroused, it's just there like everything else) and I really hope the remnants of the old religious yoke on our society continues to lessen up. Nudity should be far more natural to watch than violence.

I gave it 8/10 quite a few people hating on this one.. I understand it was a slow one, a builder, but I think that's whati liked about it, I hope they go slower from now on, besides the sucky having to wait for ages for BEARly anything its good, we can character build more when its slowed down, and some parts of the book were rather slow also so I do expect it to happen in the show. I liked Tywin and Joff, LOVED Jaime and Bri, Jon and Ygritte was good too, its nice to have a scene where Kit can have a little more expression, its truly a pity Jon is in a situation where he has to try to not let people see what he is thinking and feeling because... well that means WE also cant see what he is thinking, but yes a great break were Kit can do a bit more acting, also gotta say Rose is a real good actress she is great at expressing things with her face. the Osha and Reeds stuff seems to be coing some where now. also Tormund is showing some of his famous humour GREAT I worried the character would be to serious. but what is Mel and Gendry doing in KL. and Arya and the Hound... yay, been waiting for this pair up since season 2. hah! sansa "im stupid.. a stupid little girl with stupid dreams who never learns" lol I think lots of people wouild agree with her there :P

This has been my least favorite episode to date.

Rated 4

Too much sex and relationship dribble, felt like I was watching a trashy teen drama.

Very disappointing.

At least I know 8,9 and 10 should be excellent.

Relationship dribble?

Too much sex?

ummmm wot?
