Definitely a solid 8. The most important part of this episode was adding some of the original characterization into these characters. That is the thing I look most forward to when George R.R. Martin writes an episode.

The other writers sort of understand the characters, but they're ALWAYS missing something or pandering to a trope that makes them seem one-dimensional.

When George writes an episode, you can tell, because the characters seem to come alive again. Daenerys was more self-assured, and there was a good emphasis placed on her actual motivations for taking over these cities. Robb was FINALLY given a younger, more playful nature.. We actually see that he is a YOUNG man here. They've been overplaying his brooding, stoic persona.. He felt much better here. Catelyn stood up for herself in at least a SMALL way! Some of her defiance and intelligence shone through a little bit. Jon and Ygritte's relationship was finally portrayed as well as it was in the book. Made me like Ygritte a whole lot more. Brienne actually felt like Brienne, more reserved and kind rather than the hotheaded brash female that's been shown so far.. Sansa was given a much more faithful characterization this episode as well.

The bear scene was a little dull..

All in all, just great :). I wish they could write the characters as well as George, but they just seem to miss so much nuance.. I wish he could just write the entire TV series.

People have to keep in mind this episode didn't necessarily have parts of the story that were big plot points, and that happens sometimes. We're on the way to the red wedding. This episode was extremely necessary to add some good characterization, but I think those with an attention deficit needed some action to satisfy them.. The bear scene could have delivered that, but failed.. Not George's fault, blame D&D for writing that in.

Edit- I feel like George is necessary for these one off episodes, at the very least, because despite all of their changes, he sort of kicks the story back into orbit.. They can stray from the original characters to a certain point, but he helps to reroute them into the positions they need to be for the big payoff at the end. This was definitely what I needed to prepare for the Red Wedding :).

You have just expressed my thoughts ! I gave it a 9, because it was a great built-up episode that was needful for the upcoming events and put the characters in the right direction. And there was such good lines and great dialogues, I loved it ! Besides that, GRRM already had an action-packed episode last year so I'm glad he can develops the characters further this year. It feel just like the calm before the storm comes and I like it.

I was actually enjoying the episode, precisely, because of the dialogues and the depth of each character. I won't say that there weren't meh moments, but overall it deserved at least a 7, in my opinion. The bear scene lacked some impact, but it accomplished its purpose of developing the relationship between Brienne and Jaime further. I bet most non-readers are gradually starting to really like Jaime, mainly, due to the great performance of the actor and quality of his scenes, in this season.

I get what people are saying. Plot development was ordinary, directing was ordinary.......yet somehow it's one of my most favourite episodes of Game of Thrones so far. Loved every single minute of it, be it Robb making me want to weep his storyline is so tragic, Theon making me squirm or Bronn making me laugh out loud. I wish I could explain why I liked it so much, alas...

10 out of 10 for me.

Some of you guys must be on drugs... this episode was excellent. It wasn't perfect (Bran, Theon, Sansa) - but Brienne being swiped by a REAL bear? That's insane. Dany's scene was one of the few so far where she feels like a conqueror instead of an awkward girl, it was great. Plus all three dragons? Yessssss. I just wish we'd have seen the weirwood stump; I am a bit agitated that they've downplayed magic so much this season... but whatever.

9/10

Just keep reading, book 3 is, in my opinion, the best book of them all, it is absolutely brilliant. And stay safe from spoilers, you're not even safe on this forum. I mean there are spoiler free sections but :P you're never entirely safe. Personally I got some spoilers from youtube videos while i started to read, and after I got them, I stopped watching anything GoT related on the internet for like 6 months(while i read all the books), and it payed off :P

and btw, Welcome to the forums! :)

thanks for the welcome - I'm so obsessed with this show, nothing better on television that I've seen in years. I love that there's now a place to go to geek out after each episode. I do intend to read the entire series, but am in no hurry. As for spoilers, welllll, between this place and YouTube i'm unfortunately pretty spoiled.

not wanting to offend anyone, but I kinda felt the same about this episode (especially after last week) and so it was a bit of a buzzkill to come here and find all the negative reviews. but I understand difference of opinion and have lurked here long enough to know it's par for the course. glad others enjoyed it though!

speaking as a non-reader, I am surprised by how much I'm rooting for the Lannisters at this point, or at least for Tyrion and especially Jaime now, compared to how I felt after Season 1 (and even the very first episode).

So far, Tyrion is pretty much the hero of the show. I really dislike him in the books.

Gave this episode a 7, worst of the season IMO and I usually like slower paced shows.

absolutely love your commentary. Please do more.

Favorite was Jaime and Brianne/ when harry met sally.

Thanks - live-blogging can be great fun. I did it with the TV series "The Tudors" on another site that's now defunct - the format made it possible for blogger and commenters to interact, that was an absolute hoot.

(One thing I intended to say but missed - regarding the Theon scene, OMG, who knew they had waxing salons in Westeros?)

I may be reading too much into this, but I really liked the bit where Orell says "She won't like him when she finds out what he is" or words to that effect. Given that Orell is a warg and that GRRM wrote the episode, reckon there's a clue as to Jon's "warg Status" - don't want to throw a spoiler in here for those who have not read the books - but i found that fascinating Of course, could just be referring to him as a crow....but why from Orell?

... let me say that this episode was FULL of significance.

Well, maybe significance was the wrong word.

But it just felt to me, that nothing really course-changing happened most of the time.

Jon: Walking and talking. (Ygritte is ... REALLY annoying)

Robb: 2 infos about Talisa. (And the letter might be a red herring)

Sansa: Nothing happened really to change the plot. (Although I like TVmargaery)

Tyrion:Nothing happened. And Shae reacted exactly, as most have predicted. (Liked the Bronn-scene though)

Melisandre: Nothing important happened either. Just traveling and talking. (Gendry felt a bit stupid... )

Jaime: Wasnt as cool, as I expected. (Still liked it)

Arya: Very short.

Theon: (No comment -_- )

Bran: Just infos about the characters. The "We dont plan to go to castle black" Is the only significant info here. (Apart from the "hodor" ofc)

Daenerys: Liked it.

Tywin: Was the boss. Is still the boss. (But still no new info really.)

If such an episode came right after E4, then I wouldnt complain... if it were after E5, I would be "setup AGAIN?"

But after E6? Hhhhmmm...

I'll give it a 7.5/10.

The bear scene was about as good as it could have been, and the Tywin/Joffrey scene was pretty good.

Robb/Talisa was kinda weird and felt awkward. Surprised she is pregnant.

I was really expecting to get the big Ramsay reveal this week, but I guess not.

The Jon/Ygritte scenes were OK, and I really like how Orell is portrayed.

I expected this to be one of the season's best episodes, so it was kinda disappointing.

Dany scene was truly amazing. Shae and Tyrion were amazing. Liked the scene with Tywin and Joffrey a lot, as well as Melisandre and Gendry, and few others.

Overall though for me this was the most boring of all episodes of all seasons. As a matter of fact, this was the very first GoT episode that in parts bored me.

After last weeks' fantastic cinema, 5/10 for this episode because only about half of it was good. Worst rating I ever gave.

No yay! feel when Jaime decided to save Brienne. The bear scene was so not suspense-packed. No feel of danger at all. I loved all of that story in the book.

P.S. Theon is more pointless than Ros ever was.

Absolutely loved this episode! After lasts weeks 1/10 I'd give this an 8/10.

I've been really worried that them making a mess of the Wildling plot. So far we have had no emotional reason to like them but this episode really showed Jon's struggle. Tormund even said HAR! or something like it. Orell was brilliant too. Now they just need to do the same with a certain other few characters next week or the build up of the seasons is going to fall flat on its face from people not being emotionally invested in them.

Tywin was amazing! I can't wait for the next episode.

The Theon plot is being dragged out way to much. I guess torture porn is more popular than I thought but I think having the majority of it off screen would be much more chilling and dramatic. That first chapter in ADWD is horrifying but so captivating you literally get right into his mind. It seems to be falling short on the show.

The bear scene was great but not what I imagined. It works but I would have done it a bit differently.

Dany and Yunkai looks very promising. The Dragons looked great.

Sorry if this has been asked, but there are 15 pages, how does this average compare to the others?

It is the lowest for this season and second lowest overall. At least it was about 100 or so votes ago. Part of that is the high expectations people had for it based on GRRM writing the episode and it being the seventh, rather than the first couple which we know are build-up episodes, so it's a bit skewed in that respect.
