Is Quaithe Full of Night Soil?

Recommended Posts

Ive been wondering ever since Quaithe's first appearance, does she really have Dany's best interest at heart? Dany's incessantly trusting nature (not quite as bad as Sansa's, but I still find it frustrating, she is very much still a teenage girl with all the downside that come with that) leads her to pretty much assume that while vague, Quaithe is telling the truth or at least trying to help her. But how do we know that? All we know is that Quaithe has power, she has made some predictions that seemingly came true, and that her riddle seems to be telling Dany to go to Ashai'i. However, as George has taught us time and again, every character in this world has their own plans and agenda; nobody does anything for purely altruistic motives. So should we trust Quaithe? What do you think her agenda is? And what awaits Dany if she ever makes it to Ashai'i?

Quaithe's true motives are completely unknown but if we take her at face value her motivation is not altruism but, like Melisandre, to her church and to the Red God. So, just as Melisandre is attempting to mold and motivate Stannis to fulfill what she believes is his destiny according to her religious beliefs in prophecy and the like, perhaps Quaithe is acting in a similar role with respect to Dany.

Quaithe is just much less, er, hands-on than Melisandre.

Do we even know that Quaithe serves the Red God? Not saying you're wrong, but I don't remeber that being confirmed. After all, why would they send Moccarro to her if they already had someone speaking to Dany in dreams and whatnot? The fact that we know Quaithe isn't actually there, she's using some sort of magic to project herself, and she's trying to get Dany to come to her, has me thinking its a trap. Probably a trap to steal the dragons, after all everyone and their brother has been trying to get them since ACoK.

Quaithe seems too cryptic to be honestly trying to help Dany. All she seems to have done is add to Dany's growing sense of paranoia regarding prophecy and enemies. Dany's not a person who has done much to endear herself to the various powers of Essos, so she needs every advantage she can get if she wants to survive. I just don't see Quaithe as an asset for her.

I wonder how much of a role Quaithe will play going forward. She's only been around a few times and hasn't been particularly helpful during any of them.

I don't see any evidence that Quaithe serves R'hllor. She seems to be shadowbinder that we've only see in the flesh during Dany's time in Qarth. Quaithe's abilities and behavior seem consistent with what little we know about the glass candles.

I definately think you're correct about the glass candles, which leads me to also believe she has some sort of connection to Old Valyria. If im right about a trap, maybe an old rival family of the Targs? Who knows, but its all we can do to speculate right now.

My mistake, I was assuming all shadowbinders serve R'hllor because Mel does, but that's incorrect because we know Mirri Maaz Duur knew shadowbinding magic as well.

However, Quaithe wasn't only in the flesh while in Qaarth. She rode to Vaes Tolorro in person when she was first introduced to Dany along with Pyat Pree and Ducksauce.

he wasnt the first but they definitely had a scene together.

The first person Quaithe talks to in the books would be the bloodrider (I forget which one) Dany sent out from Vaes Tolorro to scout. But I guess that conversation takes place "offscreen". The bloodrider then escorts her along with PP and XXD to Vaes Tolorro to meet the Mother of Dragons in person.

This is part of the Qarth sequence in Clash that I was referencing. After Dany departs Qarth, her subsequent encounters with Quaithe seem to occur via the glass candles or whichever other method of long-distance communication Quaithe is employing.

I can't see how she can be a hallucination if she has appeared to more than one person though...

I'll go with her basically being Dany's Melisandre.

Edit: Seems like quite a few people have their own little red priest(ess).

'Ol Vic,

Stannis,

Dany,

Beric.

Strange how they seem to follow one person, all these damn AA prophecies.

I don't think we know that Quaithe is a servant of the Red God, other than the color of her mask being Red, I don't see any evidence that points that way. Not saying you're wrong, if you have some info I missed I'd love to hear it.

She can be trusted to an extent, she could have made a play for the dragons back in Qarth and did not. She was also honest with Dany about using the candles to visit her, the only skepticism is her motives. I do believe she has ulterior motive, but I don't believe it involves harming Dany.
