GRRM statement about the White Walkers and use of ice

The wall can impede them in that they will have to climb it to go over it but.... The wall is warded and I think it has to do with "there must always be a Stark in Winterfell. The Nights Watch was formed at the same time the Wall was created and Winterfell too. The Nights Watch, so long as there are memebers there and loyal to their vows, the wall cannot be passed by the others. When it comes to Winterfell, perhaps the others can bring Down the wall itself if there is no STark in Winterfell. This is speculating but since the others cannot enter Bloodravens cave, because it is WARDED somehow, then there has to be some connection of sort.

Their wights can't pass it. Coldhands can't either, and it also affects warging magic and presumably other types. Doesn't mean the Others themselves couldn't pass it though, if they wanted.

What would be the point of it? Making a wall that keeps your own undead minions from being able to cross it? Its ridiculous.

Not if they were retreating. Might have been a last measure. Also, who's to say they warded it? There's magic in the Wall but the wards to keep out wights could've very well been done by others.

Well...there's still Flowers and Othor. I'm pretty sure they were wights when the NW found them.

But they were dragged through. It seems their "connection" died (most likely because it was a hot day) and came back on later at the opposite side, when it became cold again.

They weren't wights yet. Just dead.

They didn't have the smell and if I recall correctly the NW noticed that Flowers had marks of being killed by an axe and Othor carried one (or the other way around).

Yeah that sounds like a good explanation.

They were stiffs. They didn't have the smell of death because they were on their way to being wights. Neither was up and moving yet, so they could be carried across the wall.

Just because they're wights doesn't mean they have to be standing up and killing everything in their path. Weren't the ones who attacked Bran supposedly "sleeping" too (sort of like sleeper agents)?

They seem to possess at least bits of intelligence.

I told you there's like this whole bizzaro ice world up there with ice dragons, ice spiders, ice woodchucks, and ice avocados. There's even a frozen Myrish Swamp. Heck, the question is what can't they do with ice. They've been so busy building really um neat stuff with ice that they completely forgot about destroying warm stuff. But now, look out. Better get that Azor Ahai dude back in action.

There'd be no point of erecting a barrier to keep your forces in, even if you were retreating.

We have no idea what the Others were trying to accomplish the first time, but saying there's no point in erecting a barrier that would keep your forces in is besides the point if A: that's where they wanted to be (it's where they live, and where men can't), and B: it's an area larger than, or the size of, a place like Canada, or C: was necessary to give retreating forces time to escape while they stalled the onslaught of man.

Also, if they built said barrier and warded it, who's to say they didn't make it so they have a means to cross back over?
