Besides Lost associations (which the show really wouldn't want...lol), viewers can't see the capitalization. It's like "the other what?" Given the plethora of British accents it would be even more confusing for some American viewers. And, while I think 'the Others' looks more foreboding in print, it loses its punch when spoken. Maybe it's nothing, just a curious design choice by the show, but then again... it could be a hint that there's a deeper connection between the Others, weirwood trees, and the Old Gods. Frankly, when one thinks on the whole shades of grey, subversion of tropes thing Martin is renowned for, I tend to doubt the Others will turn out to be some kind of generic black&white zombie-spawning bad guys.
