As a NYC boy born and bred who now resides in the land of barking dogs and no left turns, one pleasant surprise that accompanied trading concrete for boardwalk is the amount of annual Cons that have discovered NJ a more reasonably priced alternative to their more expensive neighbor across the Hudson. As such, here are a few which might warrant ASoIaF fans to attend, and if so, to perhaps share a few libations.

Chiller Theater is a twice annual convention (every April & Oct) that centers around the horror movie genre, but which accommodates virtually every form of nerd-ertainment: http://www.chillertheatre.com/main.htm

Wicked Faire happens every February. Centered around the Fantasy genre, it's kind of a hodge/podge of artists, performers, vendors, and the socially awkward discovering their awesome. http://wickedfaire.com/

The Steampunk World's Fair is a hoot. Trying to describe it is like trying to catch smoke, but think Victorian meets sci-fi... although it's much more extensive than that. http://steampunkworldsfair.com/

... and there are Star Trek Cons in Cherry Hill, and Comic Cons in Asbury Park that are smaller events, but which probably have crossover interest.

But to be honest, with an entertainment medium that has the MASSIVE following that ASoIaF does, I don't understand how no entrepreneur has thought to host a touring convention that is based on these books, the HBO series, and the actors. IMO, It could easily be the next Star Trek on the convention circuit. Hell, even Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a convention theme... just look at the activity on this message board.... hahaha.

Speaking for myself, I'm not a con person. You'd have to ask the NJ boarders who go to cons about this stuff. I remember talking about it to Xray and she said the NYC metro area is too expensive a venue for most cons, and there's probably not much of a draw in NJ itself. Who knows now, though, what with the show's rising popularity. HBO did do a traveling exhibition prior to Season 3, though, in Manhattan.

Of course, if you just want to hang out with boarders, you're welcome to come to any of our non-con gatherings. We're meeting up in midtown Manhattan for drinks this Thursday in fact. Check the "NYC in August" thread.

Well, this thread went over like a liberal at a TEA party rally... but this weekend in So. Jersey is the Monster Mania Con

http://www.monsterma...C25_GUESTS.html

We will probably be ambling through at some point...

I had forgotten all about this thread - meant to mention this earlier... I'm not planning on going to that con, but I could walk there from home, so I can certainly meet up with you for a drink either at the hotel bar or one of my favorite local establishments.

Let me know!

Will do... we;re not sure which day we'll be there yet... it depends on a family function. But when we find out, we'll post!

Sounds good. Feel free to PM if you want to coordinate via text or FB.

And I will most likely be at PhilCon - It was a good time last year. :D Plus, it's at that super-convenient Hilton in Cherry Hill. \m/

I am just seeing this thread now! I am not a big con person generally and rarely plan to go to them... but as it turns out I've been to Chiller a number of times and two two Star Trek cons in NJ (one in Cherry Hill, and one up in the meadowlands I think). :hat: I may be going to Chiller this year but won't know for a while yet.

I'm a regular at PhilCon, usually on a few panels every year as well as merely attending.

I also organize a Saturday night dinner expedition from Philcon to a nearby place

where the chef is an old friend: http://www.sapori.info

(The X's can vouch for the wonders of the food there...as can Zagat, which rated it the best

Italian in the entire state last year.)

Anyone attending this year's Philcon is welcome to join me with advance notice.

But since I don't check this board too often (mostly just before Worldcon), send that notice

a few weeks before the con to DaveAx AT gmail DOT com

I am here to vouch for the excellence of Sapori. Dave does not lie.
