Fair enough within the book :) In terms of readers he's more divisive though. If only he could conquer the readers or threaten the naysayers into silence.

As an aside, do you know if you'll be signing stock for Forbidden planet this year? I've got 2 out of 3 books signed so should try and keep up the habit.

Yup - I'm supposed to go to the Bristol store on the morning of the 5th and sign stock for the whole chain.

Nice. I'll wait and get one from there. It may be a couple quid more than amazon but the signature swings it (plus the store is pretty good).

Sounds like quite a lot of books to sign if it's for the whole chain though.

Well I just finished emperor and ya I loved it

Now I'm not usually one to root for the bad or evil characters- I hate Roose Bolton, Tywin Lannister, even karsa orlong never grew on me because of his introduction of raping and pillaging, but I really enjoyed jorg. Hat tip to Mr. Lawrence for this

Great book, fantastic series. I would love to see more of jorg but when I consider the often bloated series we get these days (wheel of time for example) my respect for the author is undiminished for not feeding my desires for more jorg (apart from what I presume will be a cameo in the new book)

One or two question's - who or what was Katherine that she could skin a lichkin?

What was the dead kings goal and was William actually evil or looking for vengeance?

Could jorg not have used the power and belief of the empire to stop the metaphorical wheel and so not have to kill himself while stopping magic ripping apart the world?

And apologise if this was evident to some, I have a tendency to rush through to the end of books

i) One or two question's - who or what was Katherine that she could skin a lichkin?

ii) What was the dead kings goal and was William actually evil or looking for vengeance?

iii) Could jorg not have used the power and belief of the empire to stop the metaphorical wheel and so not have to kill himself while stopping magic ripping apart the world?

Even though this is a spoiler thread I'll put some spoiler space in this one:

i) Someone with great potential who had devoted herself to becoming dream-sworn and stripped away the ghosts the lichkin wore as a skin, the ghosts being just souls trapped in death's dream.

ii) Ultimate power and a reckoning with his brother. And you're not seriously, after reading a whole trilogy about Jorg, asking me to come out and declare anyone, particularly a child, evil, are you? :)

iii) He didn't kill himself to save the world - he killed himself to save his brother. And no - it took their combined strength.

First of all thank you for replying to my post. Second of all congratulations on a great trilogy. I went out and bought prince of fools the day I finished emperor and am enjoying it so far

Thanks for the answers and point taken on William. I'd love to see Williams rise to power and more of his inner thoughts on Jorg

Due to the nature of your books I found myself second guessing jorgs descriptions of some things e.g. The electric chair, and other mysteries such as Katherine. My theory around the mid point of emperor was that Katherine was a freed builder, like the custodian who was able to exert her willpower and had a huge vault of knowledge at her disposal...... Probably not a very well thought out theory as it was formed while I was sprinting towards the end

  • 2 weeks later...

I just finished Emporer on the weekend after chain reading the three books over the last few weeks.

On the whole I enjoyed the series, very much so. I felt King however was the best of the three books for various reasons, particularly because it had the most satisfying ending of the three. I really pictured a kind of evil Indiana Jones in the final duel with the Prince of Arrow, and as an image that really worked for me.

However I was disappointed in a series built around it's characters that we didn't get to enjoy more of them. Certainly this is because the story is told through Jorg in the main, but it left me with so many questions that even though I thoroughly enjoyed what I read, and particularly liked the ending, the moment when Jorg freed himself from the Thorns to die with William, I still felt somewhat unsatisfied. I guess for the author however, leaving me wanting more is better than me leaving because I'd had enough.

Of my cheif wants however was:

1) More Katherine. Such potential as a character and a plot device, and yet in the end she "waits outside" ... I was actually expecting the last chapter to be told from Katherine's point of view, such was her role in Jorg's life.

2) More Makin. He really turned into a tiny character in the end, and yet again he was so important in Jorg's life. It seemed he had drugged himself to cope with whatever darkness he had inside and as such became a rather flat character in the end. I never bought the idea he would stop Jorg killing himself in the end, I wasn't convinced. I wanted to know him better.

3) An explanation around and about Sageous. I'm left wondering if he was a sole operator, or a part of a greater conspiracy ... What was his connection to Jane? Corion? If any ... How does this link with Qalasaidi and the Mathmagicians? Are we to assume he was driven by one of the factions of builder ghosts? Perhaps I don't really need answers to this, but for Sageous being essentially the bad guy for two books, his fade in obscurity in the third came as a shock to me.

I have other tiny wants, but on the whole this is what I missed. Perhaps Prince of Fools or future books could or will shed some light on some of these characters and how they ended up. Who knows.

Still I'm off to buy Prince of Fools today, so that's says a lot I guess.
