She's a gorgous woman and if they can find a good reason for her to take her top off I'm all for it but the sex scene just felt jarring. "Oh, I hate you... Going back yesterday and refamiliarizing myself with the various figures, both from literature and historical, helped give me some hope on this that it continues to go well. I don't know. I'm finding the different politics and alliance shifting and trying to figure out who's with whom to be somewhat intriguing. I want sea battles and ships on the open water, but that really could be offputting if it went on too long. These 18th century sailing vessels don't have holodecks to break up the monotony if it comes. I mean life on a common merchant ship was absolutely shitty around this period (very high mortality rate). Many sailors broke of from legitimate shipping and banded together on pirate ships because they would get better treatment there (a share in the profit, a bigger share if you get wounded, the right to elect a captain, etc.). The quartermaster (that fat bald guy) was able to veto every captain decision when not in battle. The discipline was much stricter on merchant vessels (not to mention warships). I am thinking it will build towards a descend sized naval battle between Flint's ship (The Walrus?) + 1 or 2 other pirate ships and L'urca de Lima + possible escort(s). And judging by how alliances and deals keep getting made and broken, this will transcend into the battle itself where the consequences will be deadly. When I think of pirates, I think of characters like the road agents from Deadwood or Rorge and Biter and the Bloody Mummers from ASOIAF. They wouldn't have taken orders or succumbed to the demands of a pretty blonde lady who thinks she's boss of the island. At least I don't think so. If I can find it again, I'll post the title. There was a really interesting book published a couple of years ago about pirate society. They had all sorts of 'guidelines', disability pay, reparation for injury on the job, etc. In fact, a lot of the wage and benefits were better than what the British navy offered, which was a big incentive (aside from the obvious) to turn pirate.
