Timeline of Robert's Rebellion

Oh! This is neat, but very incomplete.

Warning: Footnotes are not subject to scope. That is, footnotes may contain spoilers from later chapters or books.

1 - Eddard Stark, 35 at the start of the series (AGOT 2), was 18 at the time of the tourney (AGOT 40). Therefore, the year was most likely 281, seventeen years before the start of AGOT, 298.

2 - Brandon was 20, Petyr 15, when they fought over Catelyn Tully (AGOT 19). Since Brandon died at the age of 20 (AGOT 5), the year of the duel must have taken place in late 281 or early 282.

3 - In ASOS 50, Edric Storm learns that the Battles at Summerhall was fought when Robert had "first come home to call his banners," so Summerhall took place shortly after this.

4 - Since Robert was taking back prisoners to Storm's End and he was drinking with them (ASOS 37), Storm's End could not have been under siege at this point.

5 - Since Mace Tyrell was involved in the Battle of Ashford, the siege is likely to have occurred after that.

6 - Nine months after Eddard rode to war, Robb Stark was born (AGOT 64). Robb was born 15/6/283 (Assumption C), so the weddings likely took place between 15/9 and 29/9.

7 - Catelyn was to marry Brandon Stark, but when the time came, she married Eddard, as is the custom.

8 - In ASOS 3, Catelyn says that Hoster Tully fought on behalf of Robert in the Battles of the Bells, so he has already joined them by that point. However, Catelyn also says Jon Arryn had no heirs by the time his marriage to Lysa was "hastily arranged." Jon's cousin Denys Arryn wasn't killed until the Battle of the Bells.

9 - Eddard rode off to war scarcely a fortnight after getting married (AGOT 64), so the date was likely 29/9.

10 - Robb Stark's birth date is Assumption C. He was 14 at the start of AGOT (298) and had already turned 16 by the time of his death in 299.

11 - The war had raged for close to a year before the Sack (AGOT 13).

12 - Stannis held the castle for close to a year (ACOK 1).

13 - Dany's birth date is Assumption B.

This list is taken from the link provided in the second post. Now when was Lyanna kidnapped, when did the battle on the Trident happen, and what about Balon's rebellion?

Let's start at

1- 281 Harrenhal tourney

2- late 281 Duel between Petyr and Brandon

3- Early 282 Lyanna disappears?

4- Aerys kills Brandon and Rickard in Kings Landing (is that when Raella leaves for drangonstone?)

5- Catelyn and Ned's wedding

6- late 282 Robert goes to war

7- early 283 battle of the Bells

8- Ned at the Tower of Joy

9- Battle of the Trident

10-Sack of Kings Landing

11- Daenerys and Vicerys leave Dragonstone

12- late 283 Ned returns home with Jon

Tower of Joy is _before_ the Trident? I had thought it was much after. Even after Trident, Sack of KL and Ned riding to Storm's End to break the Tyrell/Redwyne siege (in other words, Tyrell bending the knee without a fight). I even had a question on why would Ned go to Storm's End knowing its Loose-knee Tyrell out there when his sister is at Tower of Joy.

4 No, Rhaella is still at KL, for about a year since

5 No, that's after Ned and Robert start the Rebellion

6 See above

11 and 12 where does the sequence of events come from?

Like he said, you have to turn off the scope (more specifically, set the scope for Book 3, 4 or 5). The part you are quoting is only the footnotes.

Their chronology does place the Tower of Joy after the sack.

Oh yes, I missed that. So here is a copy of the whole post linked at the beginning of the thread. Great! Thanks so much.

If there is a single incident that caused Robert's Rebellion, it remains unclear. More likely, several events led to the start of the war. It is believed that the crown prince Rhaegar Targaryen hurt Robert Baratheon's betrothed Lyanna Stark in some fashion. Brandon, brother of Lyanna, called out Rhaegar to answer for his crimes. King Aerys II instead killed Brandon and his father Rickard. Aerys II also demanded the heads of Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark. Their guardian Jon Arryn raised his banners in revolt.

Below is a list of events that took place during and immediately after Robert's Rebellion, as well as several events that may have helped lead to the war.

281

Tourney at Harrenhal

Jaime Lannister is named to the Kingsguard. A tournament is held at Harrenhal in his honor and Prince Rhaegar, champion of the games, names Lyanna Stark the queen of love and beauty in place of his wife Elia Martell.1

Duel over Catelyn Tully

In a duel for Catelyn Tully's hand, Brandon Stark defeats Petyr Baelish. Hoster Tully sends Petyr away from Riverrun a fortnight later.2

282

Dishonoring of Lyanna Stark

Rhaegar Targaryen is assumed to have hurt Lyanna in some fashion; Rhaegar may have abducted and/or raped Lyanna.

Brandon Stark rides to King's Landing to make Rhaegar answer for his crimes. Rhaegar is not at King's Landing, but Aerys arrests Brandon and his companions (Ethan Glover, Jeffory Mallister, Kyle Royce, and Elbert Arryn), demanding that their fathers come ransom them.

Trial at King's Landing

Aerys commands the execution of Brandon, his companions, and their fathers. Only Brandon's squire Ethan Glover survives.

Raising of the Rebel Banners

Aerys calls for the heads of Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon, but Jon Arryn refuses to give them up. Jon raises the banners in revolt.

Robert Baratheon returns to Storm's End to call the Baratheon banners.3

Battles at Summerhall

At Summerhall, Robert wins three battles in a single day and brings Lords Grandison and Cafferen back to Storm's End as prisoners. Lord Fell is slain and his son captured.4

Battle of Ashford

Robert attempts to take Ashford Castle, but is defeated by Randyll Tarly. Mace Tyrell claims the victory as his own.

Siege of Storm's End

Stannis Baratheon holds Storm's End against the siege of Mace Tyrell and Lord Redwyne.5

Raising of the Tully Banners

15/96. At Riverrun, Eddard Stark marries Catelyn Tully7 and Jon Arryn marries Lysa Tully. House Tully pledges its strength to the rebellion.8

29/99. Jon Arryn, Eddard Stark, and Hoster Tully ride to war from Riverrun.

Battle of the Bells

A wounded Robert is hiding at Stoney Sept when Lord Connington the Hand takes the town. Eddard and Hoster Tully storm the walls and Robert joins the fight. Myles Mooton and Denys Arryn are slain, and Hoster Tully wounded.

Prince Rhaegar returns from the south. Jon Darry and Barristan Selmy rally what's left of Connington's army at Stoney Sept.

283

15/610. Robb Stark is born to Catelyn Tully at Riverrun.

Raising of the Martell Banners

Aerys reminds Lewyn Martell that he holds Elia and sends Lewyn to take command of the ten thousand Dornishmen coming up the Kingsroad.

Battle on The Trident

31/8. Rhaegar is slain by Robert on the ruby ford of the Trident. Robert is wounded. Eddard pursues the remnants of Rhaegar's army back to King's Landing.

1/9. With Rhaegar dead and the rebel army approaching, Aerys sends Queen Rhaella and Viserys to Dragonstone with Willem Darry.

Sack of King's Landing

7/911. The Lannister host arrives at King's Landing. Aerys is slain by Jaime Lannister. Eddard arrives to secure the throne for Robert. When Robert arrives, Eddard rides south to fight the final battles of the war.

Liberation of Storm's End

Mace Tyrell surrenders to Eddard, ending the siege of Storm's End. Stannis Baratheon begins building a fleet to attack Dragonstone.12

Battle by The Tower of Joy

Eddard, Martyn Cassel, Theo Wull, Ethan Glover, Mark Ryswell, Howland Reed, and Lord Dustin encounter Oswell Whent, Gerold Hightower, and Arthur Dayne of the Kingsguard by The Tower of Joy; only Eddard and Howland Reed survive the ensuing battle.

Death of Lyanna Stark

Lyanna dies of unknown causes, presumably at The Tower of Joy. Eddard promises her something.

Eddard returns Arthur Dayne's sword to the Daynes of Starfall. Ashara Dayne flings herself into the sea.

284

1/613. Dany is born to Queen Rhaella at Dragonstone.

Any date listed above is a rough estimate, based solely on the event's relationship to either:

A) Joffrey's 12th Name Day (1/2/298),

B) Dany's 14th Name Day (1/6/298),

C) Robb Stark's 16th Name Day (15/6/299), or

D) The start of the new century (1/1/300).

The name days are educated guesses. Only D is known for a certainty. Dates are listed as Day/Month/Year.

The purpose is merely to establish a timeline, not endorse a theory and list the clues supporting it.

Concluding she died in childbirth does not help us with the timeline. We merely end up adding 7 to 10 months from whatever date she got pregnant, which is of course unknown.

Merely correcting an incorrect statement. Not explicitely stated does not equal unknown, and since the conception and birth of Jon is of relevance to the Rebellion, it might be included, as well.

ETA: the only theoretical part is the childbed fever. The first two points are book-based facts.
