A superhero film getting a best picture Oscar nomination? I'd be very, very surprised.

    Deadwood... the Film?

I listened to an interesting podcast episode on the real Deadwood. It was an episode of Most Notorious! A True Crime History Podcast with guest Barbara Fifer. She's the co-author of Deadwood Saints and Sinners. Her co-author was Jerry Bryant, a consultant on Deadwood. Interesting facts about real-life Deadwood and Al Swearengen.

Jeopardy! A salute to Alex Trebek

His run coincides with a new TV ad featuring a know-it-all gameshow contestant, and it played during the show yesterday. What's weird about this guy is he's not even hated by the viewer. One hopes it's not a case of buzzer tampering, because whenever I tune in he's already up by $10,000 like they're just spotting him huge leads, like he's got the fastest buzzerfinger in the West or something.
  5. I agree, obviously, that they haven't attended to this at all. That being said, I still don't think they're gonna put, like Tormund on a dragon anytime soon. I still think who gets put on a dragon in the show matters for the books. Of course you're totally right that I could be proven wrong in the next 4 weeks with the show's stupidity. I think you're right that the lore has strongly hinted at multiple dragonriders, but once again I refer you to the thing I said for the umpteenth time. It's still entirely possible Tyrion rides a dragon on the show. I just think at this juncture we should all acknowledge it's unlikely. Also again, I reject this premise. The showrunners clearly love Tyrion, and will give even give more latitude to his character because they want Dinklage on the show. Similar, albeit not to the same extent, as Headey with Cersei. Frankly, this is plainly more likely to be a "Type I" error (false positive) where the showrunners want Dinklage to ride a dragon than a "Type II" error (false negative) where the showrunners fail to show him riding a dragon even though he does in the books.

Why avoid a reunion between Sansa and Sandor?

Even if he were born in a back alley way in a KL slum, it seems to me that the assertion about his lack of highborn status, rather misses the development of Sansa's character in the books. Now as far as Sandra is concerned. Well who in the hell knows. But, if "realism" is going to be tossed in here, it seems that ship sailed long ago, as far as GOT is concerned.

    Jon faction VS Daenerys faction

Book Tyrion was never really that smart. He prided himself as clever, and we get his actions and justifications from his point of view, but almost everything he touched went to hell in a hand basket.
  10. Ice Queen

    SPOILERS: Rant and Rave

The whole point is to have a realm woefully unprepared for the horrors they're about to fsce in the Others. The futility of war, the price paid by the common people, death, destruction, starvation and hopelessness. This is what Feast was all about. And even then, the nobility is STIL at each other's throats instead of seeing the fate that awaits them all. Now imagine you have Robert Baratheon on the throne when the threat became clear. Say what you will about Robert, but he wasn't a terrible king even if he didn't actually want the job. Once Ned explained the situation, he would have marched north, warhammer in hand, with the kingdom behind him, and been grateful to have something to do. He would have faced that threat head on. He would have found a way to ally with Mance and the wildlings. And as a united realm they would have sttod their ground. In other words, a completely different story. But just to remind everyone, this was originally supposed to be a trilogy, not the monster it's become.
  11. Lord Varys

    SPOILERS: Rant and Rave

Sure, but main point just is that guys like Robb and Tywin and Robert and Ned really are tertiary in the grand scale of things from the point of view of the entire ASoIaF series whereas people like Aegon, Euron, Arianne, Aeron, Doran, the High Septon, etc. might turn out to be secondary or even main characters. We don't know who is the most important of those, of course, but every character that's introduced right now is going to be very important for the plot. Such characters don't show up to die, they fulfill a function at a point in the overall story when the finale is closer than it was in the first three books.

  15. The Anti-Targ

    MCUniverse: Cat Scratch Fever edition.

Seems at least like it has the critical chops to break records. Now it's down to audiences. Being the culmination of a story told piecemeal over the course of 20 movies, the movie not sucking and falling over in the final act (which happens with a lot of stories being told in the span of just 90 minutes to 2.5 hrs) is an achievement in itself. That it's looking like it will be a very good movie is amazing. Assuming the reviews hold up (which I imagine they will) Endgame is pretty much guaranteed a best picture Oscar nomination. The only question is will it do a Return of the King and actually break new ground by winning the big prize.

    Who is Going to Die

Gendry will probably die. The only reason they brought him back was because of the jokes of how he was still rowing. Even Davos made the joke. Much like the Hound was brought back because of the rampant speculation that he wasn't dead due to a minor book theory that he's alive at a graveyard. Now they will have clegeanebowl because people want cleganebowl. This show is predicable. Gendry and Arya had sex because people shipped them. Since they ran out of GRRM's content, they are now reading online discussions for ideas.

    SPOILERS: Rant and Rave

This. We don't know for sure how far this "ending" that GRRM told the showrunners goes. Did they seat and talk about every character that exists in the books like: This one dies. This one burns his daughter and dies. This one is burned by dragon. Did they talk about main revelations: Bran = 3EC, Jon's heritage, what are the WW? (without passing by every character and plots). Did GRRM just told them about the last battle? Was everything told? little details? Things we got from the book that appeared as big revelations: Lady Stoneheart, Great Northern Conspiracy, Doran's Masterplan, The Horn of Joramun, Euron's dragonhorn, The destiny of fAegon, greyscale and the stonemen, the pink letter. None of those will appear in the next chapters and that's for sure, so, do D&D really know about the fate of all those things? It seems very unlikely that none of those plots will somehow affect the "endgame"therefore i believe their knowledge of the "ending" is pretty limited. Yeah, we will probably get the right person sitting the iron throne at the end and some romance made right, and the way the others are beated but that seems all.

Why avoid a reunion between Sansa and Sandor?

He’s not lowborn either. And was the bodyguard of Joff in KL and briefly a Kingsguard. I’m sure he didn’t sleep in the stables. And if he was assigned to or in the campsite, he would have been shown there. So yes, I think he’s got a bed in the castle or surrounding buildings. And yes, I think he’s been inside.
  19. OldGimletEye

    SPOILERS: Rant and Rave

Bottom line here is I think D&D had plenty of time and resources to get most of this stuff in. And they wasted those time and resources on bullshit. Now if were talking about trying to do ASOIAF on a shoe string budget then I might agree, but then that raises the question if one ought to try to do it on a shoe string budget. Also, many of these secondary characters and their stories are interesting in their own right, even if they are not main characters.
  20. SansaJonRule

Overlaps, Based on True Events, and Historical Fictions

It's only been 20+ years since the Targaryens have ruled. In the grand scheme of things, I wouldn't call that long bereft of leadership. Technically Jon wasn't a ranger. He was a steward. We could pick this to pieces, you know. But I'll wait 4 weeks and see if your prediction is correct.

[Book Spoilers] R+L=J, A+J=T and other theories on HBO V.4

But they don't give a damn about the entire dragonrider plot. No dragon-bonding in the story, no marriage between rider and dragon for life, none of that. If you basically can ride a dragon for arbitrary reasons, if there is nothing special to it, etc. - which is the case in the show - then why on earth do you think they care about dragonrider stuff? Their take on the dragons basically is that they do what the script commands. They fly in and burn stuff and do whatever they are supposed to without a rider. I mean, it is crystal clear that Dany's dragons will have multiple riders. There is a reason why there is the rule in the books that you can only ride one dragon at a time. Somebody will have to claim the other two dragons simply to get them to Westeros. And there is also a reason why there is this dragon horn in the novels. The easy answer to this question is that Tyrion didn't ride a dragon because they didn't want him to ride one. Perhaps they didn't like the story about his true parentage (like so many readers), perhaps they thought it would be silly. But then - the most important reasons seems to be they just didn't give a damn about the dragonrider thing. They didn't want that magical dragon stuff in their show.

UK Politics: The Edge of Destruction

About 12 years ago there was talk here of eliminating single use supermarket plastic bags. There was a big uproar from certain quarters who don't like to be told what to do, and the govt of the day was of the left persuasion. So the attempt was crushed by a wave of anti-PCness. 12 years down the road awareness and a greater sense of urgency on the part of most people saw a rapid shift to where all supermarkets no longer single singe use plastic bags within the space of about a year, and the move was started with a righty govt in power. But still some people of a certain political persuasion tried to oppose it by saying that people should still have the choice, and what if you forget your bags, and reuseable bags can become contaminated with harmful bacteria, esp from meat etc.

    Arya Losin' It

At this point, I think D&D could do anything. They had Arya cook a Frey pie. The writers entire plot basis of the Gendry-Arya sex scene was that she wanted to try out sex before she died.

    Battlefield Commands/Assignments

That is not feasible against such a large mass. And the horses don't quite charge into masses of people like we saw in Jackson's Return of the King.
