Watching her breakdown at the end of that speech I almost felt sympathy for her there.. its going to take a lot.

    Slavoj Zizek on the ending

Only in contrast to the last 10-20 years of Western politics, which have gone to insanely progressive levels. 20, 30, 40 years ago people would look at Western politics today and think that they're all nuts. The political shit the people preach now would have been laughed at in the early 00s, let alone the 90s. It's not like the Chinese invented the world 'baizuo' without reason. Considering the long run of run of politics generally and the world of the show, it was actually tending towards progressive.
  4. Yeah, that is precisely what it is. There was writing on the wall of Daenerys going Mad Queen route years ago. Problem is that it was done so badly. She just jumps the shark with her torching of civilians in King's Landing, and for no obvious reason. Seeing how all three resulted in extreme number of dead people, that does not really paint her in positive light either. Which might have been the point: the fall of a hero, how easily idealistic aims and claims can get corrupted and turned into murderous rampage. Yes, Dany "wants" to end Feudalism. But were we ever shown what it is she wants to replace it with, other than "You do as God Empress Daenerys Stormborn of Blah-Dih-Dah commands"? You kidding? The entire Daenerys story arcs is built around the cult of personality she built up for herself. She also does hate other cultures - for justifiable reasons (slavery, serfdom) maybe, but she does. And Lebensraum? She has even the parallel there - "The Iron Throne is mine by right." She is an outsider seeking to conquer Seven Kingdoms for her own personal gain. Aegon the Conqueror with tits. Difference is that most of these examples were people actually guilty of various crimes, and deserved death penalty for their individual crimes. Meanwhile Daenerys just went and torched innocent people - keep in mind that, historically, sacking the city was not really a murder spree.

I think this is likely to happen for sometime - either him or Harry - but by the endgame. Nah, I expect Sansa to be single by then.

U.S. Politics: You Didn't Think It Would Be So Easy, Did You?

You need farmers to grow the food you eat, folks. And in the meantime, Trump continues his bald lie about ‘and China’s paying for it’. Apparently staff in the WH have told Trump farmers aren’t stupid and they’re getting mighty pissed off every time he says it. Meanwhile, on the Pelosi front, Trump’s comments about Pelosi being a sick woman who is unable to perform her job (‘did you see those hand movements?!’) has apparently influenced some of his supporters to post slowed-down versions of her speeches, making it look like she slurs her words, either because she’s had a stroke or is stoned on meds or just drunk, and they have flooded social media with the videos. Sometimes I just loathe your country so very much.

    Aussie Thread: Democracy Sausage

The environment is a really difficult topic and I don't think any party has found the sweet spot yet. The more drastic environmental plans are, from a scientific point of view, most needed, but they're also the ones most likely to scare off voters. On the other hand, in this day and age doing nothing will also lose you some voters (though not nearly as many). Then there's the regional divide - urban voters generally love climate action but regional voters don't. Yet regional voters probably know the most about climate change on both ends, in terms of drought but also jobs. For urban voters it is generally a theoretical or abstract concept. Since I think most people generally like climate action so long as it doesn't affect them or their livelihoods, the most pragmatic thing to do for a party that wants power is to think up ways of saying they're doing things that have no impact, which is incredibly cynical but probably a winning ploy.

The "Val" Option, Jon´s alternative to the Iron Throne?

@Ruki88 I understand that you are traumatized by the show, I truly do, but subverting just for subversion sake is not GRRM's style. Everything he writes is written for a reason, and if he gives a certain character a training montage on how to govern and foreshadows that the said character will be king, then the logical conclusion you can only take from it is that the character will become king. That doesn't mean he won't do any subversion with Jon, because I happen to believe he will, and the way I am expecting it to happen is with the hidden prince trope. In the typical fantasy story, what happens when the real identity of the hidden prince is revealed to the world? He's universally loved and automatically accepted. However, this is ASOIAF, where your typical tropes are subverted. Knowing how sadistic and evil GRRM is he will probably reveal R+L=J at the worst possible moment to be a Targaryen: after Aegon is revealed to be a fake and when Dany has earned herself a horrible reputation in Westeros. Jon, who is probably going through an identity crisis, would be universally loathed and regarded with suspicion, and that includes the North because the North remembers.

Well sure, it's definitely a possible scenario. I think Sansa will be in a position to refuse it and frankly I anticipate Tyrion will be happy to annul it. And as I've stated, I think it's hilarious you guys are like "Bran? Man that's crazy!" While in the same breath are willing to entertain Robin as someone that could hold any influence.

Just running through scenarios. Given Martin’s love for the character of Tyrion I could imagine such an outcome, but I could as easily see her married to Robert Arryn or even to no one. Edit Isn’t a kind of union between Lancaster and York kind of how the Hundred Years War ultimately ends? I’m not that close to it, however, so could be wrong.

Well, I just strongly disagree with this premise that it "does not matter who is monarch on the last page." It matters to me Seems our qualms are as simple as that. So, you mean the guy who persistently brings up Aragorn's tax policy as a criticism of Tolkien? You don't think he's going to take an avid interest in depicting how the government will function upon the conclusion of his life's work? I suppose, yes, Edric could come back in ADOS and all of a sudden become Henry VII. I won't completely rule that out. But you seem to not realize how damaged Robin is. Says who? The Last Hero vs. the guy Arya hung out for awhile with and now is just another minion of Stoneheart? Obviously disagree. In fact, that should be the start rather than the end. Ending dynastic marriages is, empirically, something the realm should do if they had any sense. Let's look at major family unions via marriage since around Robert's Rebellion: Targaryen/Martell Stark/Tully Arryn/Tully Baratheon/Lannister [..next generation] Baratheon/Florent Baratheon/Tyrell Stark/Westerling Baratheon (Lannister)/Tyrell [repeat] How many of those worked well, for any parties involved? None, I'd say, although I guess the Westerlings and Tyrells are alright at the moment. The reticence to the concept that the Lords might be like, "hey, let's stop doing this shit considering it keeps on starting wars" is baffling to me. If the "logic" of Martin's works have shown anything, it's that dynastic marriages breed conflict. Jeebus get the fuck over this morally superior bullshit. It was a comment referring to his newfound internet popularity. So you think Tyrion and Sansa will actually end up together?
  19. The Sleeper

    Aegon VI

Generally speaking the Tyrells are just fine the way they are. They more or less have everything. The same actually applies to the High Septon. After all it is Tommen's law that allowed the Faith to rearm. If they care for legitimacy at all, they want Tommen on the Throne. The thing that would blow this whole thing apart is Tommen's death. Which is where I think Tyene Sand comes in. Arianne pledges Dorne's support to Aegon in exchange for her becoming his queen. Tyene having infiltrated the Faith, gains access to Maegor's holdfast by joining the Septa's attending Cersei and poisons Tommen. This leaves the Tyrells very high and dry. Unless they want to crown Margaery as queen regnant, they would need to either support Stannis or Myrcela. Things basically fall apart for them and I wouldn't care to venture as to what they would do in such a case. The High Septon can and I think will join Aegon's side. He can provide the legitimacy Aegon desperately needs so he can keep what he gained from Tommen and more. I think there are decent odds he will be part of Aegon's Council. I think these developments have been set up. Cersei's trial is hard to predict. It is a bit of a farcical affair, as the High Septon, regardless to how much he bares his teeth at the regime, he cannot afford to actually have it overthrown as his new found status depends on it. Likewise, the Tyrells despite how much they hate Cersei and want her out of the way they can't afford to have Tommen's paternity come into question. If the Tyrells and the high Septon were in tandem they could use this as an opportunity to force Cersei out of public life for good, but as the church laid hands on Margaery, any collaboration between them is out of the question. Margaery herself is a bit of a dark horse. She is rarely a part of the discussion about the potential developments, which I think is a mistake as she is the only one in position to hold the alliance together. I do think Aegon is set up to sit on the throne, but it still requires a bit of doing. And child murder.

If there is no line of inheritance at play, then Sansa married to Tyrion Lannister becomes the power couple of Westeros. She is sister to the King in the North and likely Lord of Riverun as well, cousin to the Lord of the Vale and cousin to Jon Targaryen last trueborn Targaryen. Her son by Tyrion would be connected to 4 of the great Houses. So if it comes down to pure politics the son of Tyrion and Sansa could end up King many years from now.
  21. Too late for that, sadly.

Master thread on what the Show means for the book plot

Arianne has a far better chance than Bran. Healthy, distant royal blood, worships the right religion and a marriage to another prominent noble can secure heirs to truly unite the realm. Davos quite obviously is not, one of the few characters in a worse position than Bran. Edric squirrelled away in Essos mirrors young Henry VII out of the picture in Europe. Why would it matter if its a major character? The series would be over. Dany seems likely to become Queen before the end of the series, it does not matter who is monarch on the last page because the books would be finished. This need for a happy ever after with a goodie as King is hugely popular in fantasy, so I can see why many expect it, but, to me at least, it does not seem the direction GRRM is heading in. And Edric, Robin or anyone who ends up on the Throne can be in the last book of ASOIF. Its not written yet, so you ruling characters out on that basis seems odd. I think he likely will, if its only briefly. Yes. If its a choice between Bran and Edric its obviously going to be Edric. He's healthy, he can have children, he's an Andal and worships the most popular religion, thus support of the Faith and given he's not talking about magic the Citadel as well. Not only does Edric make more sense than Bran but in the show even Gendry made more sense than Bran, Gendry's 'story' of pauper to prince is far more popular and powerful than cripple in a cave. Not really true given in the books the North is far, far more spent than the Vale. Bran not being able to have kids should be the end of the conversation. The most important act of a king is creating heirs, Bran's inability to do this should automatically make him the bottom of the list for potential monarchs. All are superior to the impotent cripple who spent the last few years living in a cave. Glad you've researched the subject. As long as they are 18 I guess you are free to imagine what you want.

The difference is that an independent North is clearly and consistently set up in the books, whereas Bran as King has no logical basis in George’s work.
