joluoto2 Posted April 22, 2015 Share Posted April 22, 2015 There are much about the Maesters we don't know. Were they always a secular order? What did they do before writing? I suspect the Maesters was much more of a local thing near Oldtown during the Age of Heroes, perhaps focusing on medicine skills, and later became more important all over Westeros when they adopted Writing from the Andals and became teachers everywhere. I think the reason why the North uses the common tongue might be because the Maesters brought writing there, and the lords adopted the new tongue (and small folks slowly followed, but this probably took centuries).
