We are never told explicitly the extent to which Thistle's eyes were damaged...although the phrase 'in the pits where her eyes had been' isn't promising. Yep. Doesn't leave much room for debate. Gouging ones own eyes out seems a fairly hardcore extreme reaction to...well...pretty much anything.
