Why didn't the Frey take all noblemen captive as valuable hostages during the red wedding?

It always strikes me odd why so many highborn people were cut down during the red wedding,

Robb Stark needed to die that's for sure and his army was annihilated brilliantly from a tactical point of view.

The slain highborns however still have living relatives in powerfull families to avenge them.

Lucas Blackwood, Wendel Manderley, Brackens, Flints, Umbers and many others were murdered.

Their families will never forget nor forgive.

IMO if you betray someone and break holly rules you ought to be smart about it at least.

The "guests" were outnumbered by countless Freys in a hostile castle with no way out.

And very few men fight to the death if given a plausible option to surrender.

After shooting Robb the Freys could have stormed the hall and demanded surrender from all other guests, instead they just killed most of them.

I wonder if such an action was out of spite...

Maybe old Walder insisted on a bloodbath to enjoy the sight of slain highborns whose families insulted him over and over....

Any thoughts?

You answered your own question.

Walder Frey is a vindictive, disgusting, treacherous piece of shit, who got off on the sight of a bloodbath.

Honestly, if you're gonna talk about what was wrong with what Walder Frey did... Not taking hostages is the least of it.
