FaHaZe
Bran, chapter IV "Any man of the Night's Watch is welcome here at Winterfell for as long as he wishes to stay," Robb was saying with the voice of Robb the Lord. His sword was across his knees, the steel bare for all the world to see. Even Bran knew what it meant to greet a guest with an unsheathed sword. Apparently, I'm not intelligent enough. What does greeting a guest with an unsheathed sword mean? And is there a meaning of holding the sword across your knees or is it something they just did? Glom
If you greet someone with your weapon ready, that isn´t friendly at all.A greeting usually involves putting the arms away and baring your hands to show that you are "safe".Well, they do have some rules on etiquette regarding guests explained in the book. I don´t seem to remember if this particular thing is discussed more somewhere. I do remember that unsheathing your sword in the presence of your liege (lord) is supposedly a mortal crime. Woftis
Basically what the previous poster said; having an unsheathed sword while you 'greet' a guest is hostile. It sends a message.
