  1. Were videos not released of a Jaqen audition for season 2? Does this mean that he was not cast properly for s1 so they kept him hidden by a hood. Also does the man in the pic not have a scared nose? They could have decided he just has a scared nose rather than missing one to save on cost

That could be although it would be confusing. After his transformation Jaqen has a scar on his nose (and curly hair besides!)

Sounds a lot like a description of the man in front.

    Anybody find a reference?

I only found speculation. Most of it that Jaqen is hooded man and some that he is the man in front.

Btw had any luck with the pictures yet?

  2. Because the men other men were not missing a nose I assumed that the hooded man must be Rorge. The man in front had curly hair and a scar, which matches the description of Jaqen (after his transformation but never the less). So I thought he must be Jaqen.

But I guess not showing the guy has some benefits for HBO as you pointed out.

    Anybody a good reference?

  3. Thank you for the compliment.

I did not make the Tarly coat of arms on the wiki as I could not find anything (without copyright) that resembles a striding huntsman. PL is probably right; someone may have read "riding" in stead of "striding". I posted a remark to the creator about this.

As long as we do not have a better coat of arms I suggest we leave the current one in place.

  4. Dorne is fairly unquestionably the iberian peninsula. They favour spears in battle (at least the Spanish did in Medieval: TW). There are distinct ethnic groups within the kingdom, the "Salty", "Sandy" and "Stony" Dornishmen according to Daeron I. Medieval Spain was a cultural meltingpot, with groups of Muslims, Jews, Basques and others. It's also fairly southern, deserty and fits my Western Europe comparison too well to throw away.

Dorne also has a bit of Wales. Isolated from the rest of the land by mountains. The only part that was conquered by "the Conqueror" (William / Aegon). A slightly different attitude to bastardy. Different succession rules. And of course the title: Prince instead of King.

  5. So if I am correct the reader of the article will choose the filter. The article will then show the appropriate sections. Correct?

On a functional level this is standard work; give a variable a value. Then based on the value this or that action is taken (show / unhide certain section). I don't know what the possibilities of Wiki templates are but the idea is great.

  6. BTW I still don't understand why there aren't more contributors on the english part o_O there's three active contributors on the russian, four on the french, and on th english, which have the biggest pool of fans speaking english that could help... there's just you and Scafloc (who have less time now than before). That not only disappointment. That's just sad in fact :worried:

I wonder the same thing. Don't know how we can improve this.

It does help that new articles appear on a lot of pages on the right site of page. That was a smart idea that helped to make forum users aware of the wiki. They did not become major contributors but there were quit a few minor edits because of this.

Wikipedia is doing a major cleanup of the ASOIF pages there. I will post a notice on the project page there to invite people who want to contribute to AWOIAF

  7. PG,

Your opinion about how the article should be written is quit clear.

But what if somebody else feels that it should be written differently? What then?

Should the other person or you leave the wiki because of a different opinion? Or should we start an edit war?

I think the solution should be to post to the forum how you feel that the article should be written. If there is already a policy about this feel free to state why you think it should be different.

But if you keep changing the article after someone pointed out there was already an opinion about this you are bound to step on someone's toes.

  8. Pale Griffin,

I don't think it's a "commander"-style title, like Warden. "Lord" seems to have pretty distinct meaning in this culture: if you're meant to be only a warden, or a commander, they call you "shield" or "commander" or "warden." When they use the word lord, they seem to mean it. And what is it they mean? Well, usually, yes, a castle, but at the very least there are lands (not always described at the creation of the lordship), and presumably vassals. The only vassals may be serfs, but at least somebody owes you fealty.

Possibly, Stannis intends to make Sal a sort of lord-paramount-in-miniature. Instead of being Lord of the Riverlands or Lord of the North, which are enormous regions, it's a similar setup, with some vassal lords, but on a much smaller scale. Probably, the lands with which the King intends to invest that title are whichever it turns out belonged to the least loyal houses whose territory is on or near the Bay.

It could be a courtesy title. Vary and Bloodraven are called Lord though they have no lands.

  9. New question. When Stannis made Salladhor Saan Lord of Blackwater Bay...did he establish a new noble house...or is it just a title like Shield of Lannisport or Warden of the North?

I don't think Stannis gave Sallador a castle so it is probably only a title or rank of a commander. Like the title Robb gave his uncle: Warden of the Southern Marches. Or like the titles of the Lannister like you said.

  10. Pale Griffin,

I'm certainly tempted. Can you show me how?

At this moment there are no pages per year, all years link to the appropriate section of Years after Aegon's Landing. So if you would add a reference to say for instance year 299 AL, you have to add "[[299 AL]]". Then if you click the page you will go to the section 299 AL within the article "Years after Aeogon's Landing".

Maybe you could add the year in the table in the beginning of the article.

I was think about expanding that part to include a link to the next chapter of the same POV character. A picture of the character would also be nice. Does anybody know of pictures of POV characters that we can you use (under the GNU Free Documentation Licens ect)

  11. Ah, forgot to say. The upgrade has wiped out the IPB Wiki bridge functionality, so none of that is working presently. The maintainer had planned to release an IPB 3.0 compatible bridge last weekend but fell ill. I think he may release it this weekend, and if so we'll get that installed so that editing can resume.

The wiki is still down. Is the maintainer still ill?

  12. He may have been mentioned at some point in Joffrey's reign (though I don't recall it), but Cersei definitely threatened Tommen by having Pate whipped in aFfC.

Pate had been Joffrey's whipping boy as well:

Pate was Tommen's whipping boy, as he had been Joffrey's.
  13. There is a problem when in a template a calculation is made. It does not seem to work.

I used this to determine which Feature quote should be selected (for the Main Page). I have a temporarily fix that selects the Feature quote number that corresponds to the day of the month (there is no calculation in that). This means the quotes with a number > 31 will not be selected. But I guess that is acceptable.

  14. If it was 19 or 21 or 23 years older than Hoster Tully, that would be well and good. But I'd be very cautious about taking a round number like 20 (or 50 or 100 or 1,000) too literally. Perhaps an approximation such as 'in his mid-seventies' (or whatever) would be preferable, in the absence of more definitive references.

    The quote was:

Lysa had always been too fond of singers. I must not blame her. Jon Arryn was twenty years older than our father, however noble

I realise that it is possible that a number is not exact meant but as we don't know that I would like to propose that we take what we know. And is this case we know Catelyn said twenty.

So if there are no words that point to an estimation then we can use the number until there is a reference that the number is not exact mend.

  15. Yep it'll be a great thing ^^ but a SQL magician is required ! I didn't find any good walkthrough :'(

Another thing about AWOIAF. I think more references could be added in articles, at least for the informations that aren't directly from the books. An example : On the "Jon Arryn" page ( http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Jon_Arryn ), it is said that Jon Arryn is born in 225AL. We don't have this information on La Garde de Nuit. It's probably right, so I wanna add it on our wiki, but no way to know from where this information comes from. Is this a calculation ? an info given by GRRM in an interview ? etc... without any source, I can't take it into account. Do you understand my point ?

I know something about SQL but what is the query that is requered and what are the tables?

About Jon Arryn, I seem to have added his birth year myself. I did a search in the books and found that Jon Arryn was 20 years older then Hoster Tully. This is in chapter 49 (Catelyn) of A Clash of Kings. I'll look again for the birth year of Hoster Tully.

But you are right we need the reference.
