  1. Hi everyone! This board seemed really nice and it's always amazing to share points of views between fans, when we all understand each other and have a passion in common :)

    So here's a short presentation...

I'm Justine, fourteen, and i'm from Canada.

I always loved Middle Ages stories, all those knights, kings and ladies tales. And then I heard of Game of Thrones. I started watching it something like six months ago. Yes i'm a new fan. Then I fell in love and started reading the books. I'm currently reading A Clash of Kings and soon enough A Storm of Swords. It's such a fascinating world, so deep and complex. I always had a fascination for the Lannisters, even though the Starks will forever be "my first favs" I'm sorry, it was a bit long. I can lost myself when I start.

And first of all, please forgive me for my english, I talk french in real life. Hope you'll understand.

Thank you really much for reading this, really happy to join this forum.

Welcome to the boards, Justine!

Don't worry about your English. Most people here aren't native speakers. Beware the spoilers since you're still reading! The boards are dark and full of spoilers.

  2. Welcome to the forum Clare! And also a big welcome to OursIsTheFury! :)

I too have only recently signed up after lurking for so long. The guys here have all made me feel very welcome and hopefully I can help to make you both feel the same way! Welcome again to you both... :)

  3. Hi all, I'm Clare. I'm from liverpool, England and I've been lurking these boards for a while now. I started off with the show but I received the books last Christmas and stormed through them.

My favourite character changes daily. I'm particularly interested in the mystical/prophecy elements to the story, but I am neither eloquent nor original enough to come up with anything to add to the discussions so far, so you'll usually find me on the more light hearted threads.

    Welcome!

  4. I saw the first Twilight movie (not in cinema). It wasn't as bad as Abe Lincoln: vampire hunter. It was horrible of course, but not on the level of ABVH, fucking shite movie.

How did you handle the sparkling vampires in Twilight? [sorry for going off-topic by the way, I'm just really interested]

  5. 99% chance that it will suck. I haven't forgotten Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. That might be the worst movie I saw in theatre in the past decade.

You clearly haven't watched any of the Twilight movies. At least in Vampire Hunter something happens, you have a plot and the characters actually do stuff. I wanted to pour acid in my eyes and never go to the movies after watching Twilight.

Finally watched Eastern Promises. Saw Donald Sumpter (Maester Luwin) and the guy who plays Pyp. I think I saw Art Parkinson (Rickon) in the Dracula Untold trailer.

  6. Hey there. I just thought of something. A few months back I came upon a post [sorry but I remember neither the thread nor the name of the poster, most likely a Jon-centric one] I think might be relevant in the R+L series.

The poster was analysing a Catelyn chapter, the one where she comes upon an old statue of an old king, I think Tristifer was his name. That post was so amazing and I think it had a lot of R+L symbolism and parallels. I'll try and find it. Sorry if it turns out to be nothing.

  7. Welcome, Kyoshi!

    What is Qawaii music?

    Thank you!

The best way I can describe it is to quote wikipedia: "a form of Sufi devotional music popular in South Asia." It's very calming. It can be very poetic, it's just beautiful.

Well I've introduced myself already, but I just wanted to stop by this thread again and say that after almost a month of being here I absolutely love it. It's the perfect mix of Game of Thrones and everything else. I spend a lot of time in the General Discussion section and there's been a thread for everything I've wanted to talk about. Everyone I've encountered have been extremely nice and I've learned quite a bit more about GoT from all the helpful members. Its been fun filling in the time leading up to Season 5 discussing the casting/filming news and other little tidbits :) I've also enjoyed looking through The Objects of Ice and Fire section. Awesome merchandise and collectibles I've come across as well as the fans that love this series is wonderful.

Have you come across any spoilers yet?

  8. Hey there. Just discovered this thread, been here two months now, I think. Never introduced myself, guess I'm doing it now. (Sorry for short sentences, bit medicated). Welcome to the other newcomers.

Also wanted to say this is the best forum I have come across so far. Most of the people here seem highly intelligent. Most of the conversations are civil, something I never experienced on other boards. Love the re-read projects and some of the theories. Overall, I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here.

Oh year, I'm 24 and proudly South African. I absolutely love music. Big Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen and Jimi Hendrix fan. I love all kinds of music: from Reggae to Qawali.

    Renly/Loras Analysis

    [sNIP]

I absolutely love the analysis. I never ship anyone (except Mickey Malkovich and Ian Gallagher in US Shameless) but your essay was so moving I find that my heart has grown three times.

One of the things for which I applaud GRRM is that he strayed from stereotypes. I can't help but wonder how much more of this romance we would have seen if the first book had been written say, two years ago. Maybe the thing that makes is so special is the subtlety with which it was handled.

Also, I'm trying to revive the thread, trying to get to Dany and Daario.

  10. Sometimes I wonder why some of the people on this forum still watch the show. The comments posted while the show was airing will lead you to believe everyone is having a good time and loving the episode. But then it ends and people don't see the ONE thing they wanted to be there and suddenly it was all bad.

Speaking as someone who started by watching the show and then reading the books, I have to say that I was generally more impressed with the show before I started reading the books. But that's because I came to the show with no expectations except thrilling entertainment. And that's what I got. This is the same reason the Unsullied are not complaining about the episode (from what I've seen anyway). The thing is that it was a BRILLIANT episode, like the rest of the episodes this season.

Assuming that the biggest disappointment was Stannis the Missing, I get the feeling that if Stannis had made it to the wall people might have then started complaining about the manner of his arrival, or how he just didn't seem heroic enough, or how D&D deviated from the book, or how the lighting didn't hit his hair at just the right angle...

In their disappointment people fail to realise that this is a show. Unlike GRRM's books, it has several limitations imposed on it. A lot of the things we read cannot be translated on to the screen. GRRM works with imagination and imagination alone. D&D work in the real world. I do admit that if the episodes were 10 minutes longer maybe that problem would not be so extensive. However, that would still strain the budget and D&D would still manage to piss off some people.

The thing to do when watching this show is to cast away all book expectations. I loved the episode, book knowledge or not, it was brilliantly done. Even better than Blackwater in my opinion.
