Northern Mountain Clan Armour?

Yes that does indeed seem to be what he is wearing. Though it looks pretty strange, in a bad way. Compare it to this guy and his transitional period armor suit for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ybgJF02WdE(Fully dressed except for helmet at 11:35). But yeah, agreed in general.

Edit: Also coats of plate/brigandines didn't really look like they did in the show. They were more like hauberks than flappy coats as they are in the show. For example https://i.warosu.org/data/tg/img/0211/41/1350347083912.jpg

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yes, full plate fighting mainly revolves around trying to get your weapon to where there isn't any plate armor rather than trying to smash through it. To a degree this is true for all armored fighting, but especially so with protection as good as this.

As you say Hollywood style fighting would be completely pointless.
