Game of Throne Universe, anyone?

Everybody's at it. It all started with Marvel of course and it's not surprising that the MCU is the most developed, now encompassing multiple movie franchises and tv series (the best of the lot? CA: Winter Soldier and Daredevil on Netflix). But success, especially financial, of course prompts others out of the woodwork: Fox, Sony, WB, DC and even Marvel's parent Disney are all at it, from an ever expanding X Men universe, to DC's burgeoning universe (a whopping 10 movies in the next five years) to Spiderman and even Star Wars. Which brings me to the obvious question.

GOT is a pop cultural phenomenon at the moment, it's the most cinematic (in terms of production values) tv show, it has a rapidly expanding scope and has a ready rich source in ASOIAF. D&D are obviously tiring, they are trimming/changing everything they can in order to finish the whole lot within 7 seasons. I think it's time for GRRM and Time Warner and HBO to step in a do two things: ease D&D's burden in trying to make GOT everything to everyone, and commission further GOT universe franchises. This will mean that the show can focus on the Starks, Targaryen(s), Lannisters and Tyrells and finish the primary story without leaving fans shortchanged by the absence, or reduced presence, of the Greyjoys, Martells, or Daynes, and locations like Old Town, Casterly Rock, or a proper look at Volantis and it's politics as well as other Free Cities.

Nature of these franchises? Dany and her dragons can make a good movie (she already has extremely high visibility). Sean Bean can easily lead a prequel blockbuster. How about a GOT spin off, candidates include Dornish or Essos setting. The sky is the limit, if Marvel can release 2 or 3 (really big) movies a year, surely the GOT machinery that cranks out 10 comparable hours a year can manage. Already the show consists of a mini franchises, Tyrion is one, so is Jon. In fact, when the Starks reunite it'll feel like the first Avengers movie.

I'm pretty sure this has already been considered but there are a few challenges. HBO is wary of losing a huge driver of subscribers and D&D are fed up (who can blame them, with all that work load?) But a few things are in favour too: I'm sure GRRM will be enthusiastic (he's been on record saying he wouldn't mind more episodes or a big screen finale.) Hopefully he gets more influence this time, if the WOIAF is anything to go by, he'd cherish the opportunity to build his cinematic universe. Apparently the IMAX thing went very well. HBO will be losing this series in two years anyway, they've said they wouldn't mind 3 more after that and what better way than a spin off, linked to a buzzed about big screen Drogon? HBO's corporate parent Time Warner is in a great position to exploit this potential (they own New Line Cinema, for instance). It's insane no executive has seriously talked publicly about this.

tl;dr

HBO is losing GOT in a couple of years, they should consider a spin-off. Better yet, a whole universe of interlinked stories and movies (who wouldn't want Dany's dragons big screen? Prequels, sequels, spin offs. Arya, or Ned & Lyanna, or a young dashing, arrogant Jaime with the Smiling Knight and Arthur Dayne? Greyjoys, Martells, Dunk and Egg? The first Dance of Dragons? C'mon!

George Martin was ahead of his time but it's okay he's had 30 year to build his book universe and now that we've finally caught up in this day of a franchised world, ASOIAF was taylor-made for this.
