H.P.
As many of you know, there is overwhelming proof that Game of Thrones is set in Sweden. The main one being, of course, that the continent is named after one of Sweden's biggest cities, Västerås (pronounced "Vesteros"). This episode gave us another piece of evidence. "Gift" is "poison" in Swedish. So the name of the episode, "the Gift", obvously referred to the poison the Sand Snake gave to Bronn.
Murat
Nice info @ Västerås = Westeros but ...GIFT means also poison in German. I think Westeros is to resemble Great Britain and the wall is the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadrian%27s_Wall . At least I think thats what GRRM said in an interview, he got the idea for ASOIAF when he was on the wall and thought of the people in ancient times (roman empire) guarding the wall against the "wildlings" in the north AKA Scots! If I'am not mistaken he said also something like Westeros is the UK and Ireland ... found a nice 30 sec YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftc9rZIifYY I will search for the intervie (Hadrians Wall) and Edit it in later. EDIT: here the interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vcy-EhkHXnEat 36:
Sultan of Westeros
I consider political structure of Westeros resembling closely to political structure of late Mughal empire in Indian sub continent. In late Mughal period the Mughal Emperor still considered sovereign of India and had power over capital Dehli but much of India was ruled by independent princely states with little or no allegiance to emperor regularly fighting each other. There's an internet theory that the plot for ASOIAF is based on the Ragnarok. You can read about it here http://gameofthronesandnorsemythology.blogspot.com/2013/05/ragnarok-song-of-ice-fire.html This is as opposed to the TV Show A Game Of Thrones which is based on the telenovela Soy tu Dueña.
