He knew this was coming, because the 3ER knew this was coming. Benjen may also have knowledge about the Tower of Joy. He wasn't there, but he was Ned's brother, and this concerned his sister. Ned didn't tell Cat, but Ned didn't really know Cat back then. Maybe we'll see why Benjen joined the watch. There is a compelling reason for it, I'm sure. I think we will find out.
