Seventeen years of life at the wall training thieves and rapists would have only exacerbated those tendencies. And as someone pointed out, he was rather fond (in a douche way) of his castle trained prodigy when he arrived, and I imagine he was the same about Ser Waymar Royce. He turned nasty on Ion when Jon undermined his authority and openly defied him in his role as drill master. Drill masters are always prize arseholes , as anyone with any military experience will testify. Their job is to brutalise and break down recruits. If I was Alliser I would have come to hate Jon too.
