Dolorous Edd Targaryen
I am shocked and appalled that no one has realized the character Barristan Selmy was created for the sole purpose of giving Sean Connery a clear role to play in any film adaptation
Ricky05301986
Interesting topic; I'd like to make my first post here. Just throwing out some names at random: (this is assuming I have a minimum budget of $100 million) Sienna Miller - Cersei Heath Ledger - Jaime Brad Pitt - Rhaegar Orlando Bloom - Theon (c'mon, he's a pirate... with a bow...) Powers Boothe - Balon Greyjoy Peter O'Toole - Maester Aemon Sean Bean - Eddard Stark Karl Urban - Edmure William Moseley - Robb (he wasn't bad in Chronicles of Narnia) Daniel Radcliffe- Jon Snow (this sucks, I know) Colin Ferrell - Renly (I had a lot of ideas for this one so I just went with the most capable actor) Ian Somerhalder - Loras (don't know why, really) Benicio Del Toro - Euron Harrold Perrineau - Khal Drogo Christian Bale - Beric Dondarrion And last but not least, I just gotta go with Angelina Jolie for Melisandre. I heard someone else mention Monica Bellucci and that's also a great choice but it's always been Angelina in my mind. Kate Beckinsale would be awesome too. hergrace
Here's just some of the actors I could think of to play the roles of specific characters: Cersei Lannister - Miranda Otto (around the time of when she did 'lord of the rings') Cersei's characters is about 31 in AGOT. Sansa Stark - Emma Watson Daenerys Targaryen - Amber Tamblyn Ser Barristan Selmy - Sean Connery (perfect!) Eddard Stark - Sean Bean Arriane Martell - Jessica Alba Lady Melisandre - Catherine Zeta Jones/Angelina Jolie Joffrey Lannister - William Moseley (note the pouty lips in Chronicals of Narnia!!) Jaime Lannister - Colin Farrell or Heath ledger Margaery Tyrell - Michelle Trachtenbug/Amanda Bynes Khal Drogo - Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) Lyanna Stark - Natalie Portman Euron Grejoy - er....Christian Bale For the other remaining characters = I have no idea!! >=D

Klegane the Kinhater
Daniel Day Lewis as either Euron Greyjoy or if he put on some pounds, Robert or Stannis. I think he is a highly undervalued actor for the work he has done.
BabberSher
Blackfish - Pierce Brosnan Walder Frey - Bill Nighy or David Hyde Pierce Ellaria Sand - Aishwarya Rai Arianne Martell - Selma Hayek Greatjon Umber - Hacksaw Jim duggan (only kidding) {Hritik Roshan could make a good Rhaegar... after changing the hair} {Kate Beckinsale would make a great Future or more older Arya} Catelyn - Debra Messing Edmure Tully - Alan Tudyk Maester Aemon - James Cromwell Gregor Clegane - Ron Perlman Sandor Clegane - A younger, fitter Bruce Campbel would be awesome! Grey Wind - Eddie from Frasier, wearing wolfskin...lol, i'm running out of ideas
Maester Yobjascz
I may add more as I remember them, but here's some food for thought: Renly Baratheon / Young King Robert - Julian McMahon King Robert Baratheon - Julian McMahon + Fat Suit - Has the right look, is about the right age, and can act. He's got a big enough frame (6'3")... just give him a couple of months to weight-lift and bulk up. Cersei Lannister - Kelly Carlson - Plays the crazy woman *very* well... and has the look too. Watch Nip/Tuck to get a good idea of how an ambitious, crazy, porn star could easily be confused with Cersei... Joffrey Baratheon - Hayden Christensen - Nobody pouts like Hayden/Anakin Jaime Lannister - Josh Holloway - I used to think a young Brad Pitt for this role, but I think Holloway is better suited to it... and a little closer to Jaime in age. Tywin Lannister - Gabriel Byrne - Go watch The Usual Suspects again... then tell me that this man doesn't have the voice, the stare, or the cold rage to play Tywin Roose Bolton - Steve Buscemi - The guy is creepy to start with... and he's got just enough intrinsic humor to play Roose. Give him a chance to play a serious villain, and he will *own* those scenes. Eddard Stark - Viggo Mortensen - Serious, dark, yet fatherly... the perfect Eddard in my eyes. Margaery Tyrell - Michelle Trachtenberg - Has some acting background... and looks the part. Khal Drogo - Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson - Yes, it's been said before... but dammit, it's perfect casting. Loras Tyrell - Orlando Bloom - Slight, somewhat effeminate, athletic... i.e. Loras Tyrell Aerys Targaryen - William Dafoe - Whoever suggested Dafoe to play the Mad King in Jaime's flashbacks was absolutely brilliant! Arthur Dayne "Sword of Morning" - Jimmy Smits - Sizeable, athletic, and has an air of respectability that's needed for someone like the Sword of Morning... Gerold Hightower "The White Bull" - Sean Connery - Who better to play the stereotypical ideal Lord Commander of the Kingsguard? Lord Varys - Kevin Pollack - Once again, look to his role in The Usual Suspects. The guy's got the look for Varys; he can come across as tough, dirty, or dainty. Sandor Clegane - Edward Norton - Some may disagree with me here, but hear me out... Norton is too good an actor to be wasted on a role that doesn't need passion (like Littlefinger or Bronn). And we need an actor who not only comes across as big & strong, but who can emote a layer beneath the gruff. See Norton's performance in American History X... also, note how ripped he was in that movie (he's also 6'1"... not small, though not huge; play with the camera perspective to make it work). Gregor Clegane - Find a *big* wrestler... doesn't need to emote; just keep him hidden in a huge set of armor. As far as I know, the bulk of his lines come during the end of the duel against Oberyn Martell. Maester Luwin - Ian Hom - Big role for the first couple of books... and every time I read Luwin, I picture Ian Holm playing the priest in Fifth Element. Danaerys Targaryen - Milla Jovovich - Can play someone younger than she is... most importantly, she can act, and she has that slightly strange look that goes perfectly as Valyrian Petyr Baelish "Littlefinger" - Gary Oldman - He's got the look, and he's got the acting chops. Jeor Mormount "The Old Bear" - Donald Sutherland - He can act, he's the right age, and bundle him up in furs & armor, and he'd look the part... bear he is (6'5") Jorah Mormount - Kiefer Sutherland - With his father playing Jeor, this is *very* tempting... though I don't know if it's quite the right fit... Victarion Greyjoy - Daniel Day Lewis - It just works. Randyll Tarly - Bruce Campbell - I can't think of anyone better to play someone who has attained the ultimate in bad-assness and a cult-following. There are more, but I haven't the time to put it all down just yet. I'd love to find a good role for Kevin Spacey (Littlefinger might not be bad), but he's too good an actor to be put in a small part. Other actors physically large enough to play roles that I haven't matched them to yet: John Corbett (6'5"!!!), Val Kilmer, Jean Reno, Sean Bean, Eric Bana
Ealasaid
I second the vote for Bill Nighy as Tywin Lannister. For those who may not be familiar with Bill Nighy, he played Viktor (the reincarnated old vampire lord) in the original Underworld movie. And how about Brian Blessed as King Robert Baratheon. MMmm. And now whenever he is in anything - Deadman Man's Chest, for instance - I keep waiting for Viktor to erupt. Remember, Ned was in his mid-30's when he was beheaded. So think younger. malek
Robert - Brian Blessed Littlefinger - Jonny Depp Bronn - Daniel Day Lewis Jaime Lannister - Ethan Hawke Ned - Ruffus Sewell Osmund Kettleblack - Sean Bean Tywin - Gene Hackman Sansa - Alexis Bledel Cat - Andie McDowell Cersei - Gwyneth Paltrow Jeyne Westerling - Elisha Couthbert Dany Michelle Trachtenberg Berric - Ethan Hawke Sandor - Ron Perlman (I belive that GRRM said how He could see this guy as Hound) Gregor - Goetz Otto Ser Barristan - Sean Connery Varys - P.S. Hoffman Roose Bolton - Gary Oldman Ariane Martell - Shirri Appleby
jondegi
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but, wouldn't Tom Cruise make an excellent Jaime? Seriously. Just think of Lestat in An Interview with a Vampire, except not all dead looking. He would be perfect.
Antacid
Nuttiest so far: Orlie Bloom as Loras (alright, I get it, but come on). Patrick Stewart is both too charismatic and way too old for Stannis (who is in his thirties), and much too nice for Tywin. Edward 'Jack' Norton as The Hound? Mine: Andy Serkis IS Dolorous Edd Tollett. John Malkovich IS Varys. Really, he's been playing Varys for his entire career. Peter Dinklage IS Tyrion. Alan Rickman IS Tywin. I think Connie Nielsen would be great as Cersei. Look at her here. Just because you haven't seen her play a bitch doesn't mean she can't. Seriously, all the Cersei suggestions have been tanned, smiley bimbos; Cersei needs to be pale and intimidating. People need to stop getting hung up on hair colour, which can be changed easily, and get properly hung up on age, which can't. In real life, you'd want relative unknowns for most roles like with LOTR. Fantasy needs to be immersive; there's nothing less immersive than watching Brad Pitt talk about how much he likes boffing his sister.
Martin Silenus
Just my two cents, I know it's not a major role or anything, but I think Zach Galifianakis would be perfect for Shagwell. Too bad Brienne killed him. He was too droll to die.
Maester Yobjascz
Some other fun options: Clive Russell as Greatjon Umber Vladimir Kulich as Tywin Lannister Stellan Skarsgard as Aeron "Damphair" Greyjoy - Rent "13th Warrior" to see the first two actors in action... Ricky05301986
I've been told that I'm terrible when it comes to casting but in my mind I have certain actors/actresses in specific roles. I don't know why and I just can't help it. So, despite my crappy imagination I'll add a few more to my previous list: Paul Bettany - Littlefinger Tim Robbins - Jorah Mormont Jeff Daniels - Robert (maybe Robbie Coltrane or Brendan Gleeson but they might look too old) Ben Kingsley - Tywin (really can't explain this one) Jeremy Piven - Ser Dontos (just threw this out there for a laugh; Jeremy Piven is just too hilarious) Ray Stevenson - Sandor (lots of make-up required) Emily Watson - Catelyn (must be that red hair) Damn, I'm way over that $100 million budget I set. Oh well... Couldn't help noticing some awkward choices. Hayden Christensen as Joffrey?! You know Joff is 13-ish, right? Arkan made some comments at the end and I agree with them: Julian McMahon is not Renly; I don't think Julian can pass as a 21-year-old. And Milla Jovovich as Dany? She's not gonna cut it as a teenager. I gotta back Antacid on his opinions too. Can't see Orlando Bloom as Loras despite what everyone says about the name-connection and Patrick Stewart is just too old for Stannis. Besides, I had Orlando pegged as Theon (typecasting, it's unfortunate) But there may be other roles for Patrick Stewart, you never know...
Sam the Slayer
Mine: Andy Serkis IS Dolorous Edd Tollett. John Malkovich IS Varys. Really, he's been playing Varys for his entire career. Peter Dinklage IS Tyrion. Alan Rickman IS Tywin. Yes, yes and yes I am shocked that no one has cast Michael Wincott ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000699/ )as the Hound, Listen to his voice, for crying out loud!!! This is the guy I think about when I hear Sandor's voice described... Raspy, angry, cynical... did I say raspy? Peter Dinklage as Tyrion is the only actor I actually "hope" they will get, if they ever make a live action miniseries... Lets face it, we are not going to get such million dollar actors in a Fantasy miniseries, really... And I just saw Pete Dinklage in "Find me guilty" and I was actually looking at a dark haired Tyrion...
