I'm doing a reread of the series right now, and I just got to the part where Arya ends up in the dungeons. Anyways, do we ever find out anything about the wizard and the bearded man that she sees talking about killing Ned Stark?

My speculations on this is that it could have been Maester Pycelle(bearded man) and the chief of the guil of alcheymists (wizard). Which means someone wanted Ned dead. Could have been Tywin? After all Pycelle was a follower of the Lannisters. Tywin was off fighting battles yes, but Ned was also Hand of the King. A dangerous person who was friends with Robert.

Isn't that Lord Varys in disguise and Illyrio Mopartis that she overhears?

Yes we do. Their identities become clear and quite obvious if, and it is a big if, you pay attention to their descriptions and can match them up to two other characters.

Both characters appear in other places in AGOT.

One of them is slightly obscure as he appears early on in the book.

It's never stated explicitly, but there are more than enough clues to figure it out. I can't say more without spoiling.

Let's just say that the mention of "little birds" is a clue. And the description of the bearded man sounds remarkably similar to a certain Pentoshi merchant.

Yes, you will find out who eventually... You can't really say anything without giving it away.

The plot thickens... I wonder when Illyrio Mopatis will really gain significance as a character. After that he isn't mentioned again in a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out he's pulling a few strings. Maybe Varys is in his service ?
